What did you call the monsters before you knew their names?

Recommended Posts

Another one of these threads, eh...

I've known the monsters' names for as long as I've been playing Doom, so for the most part I just called them what they are. The only time I didn't is when I FIRST saw someone playing it, and I thought Lost Souls were the flying skulls of dead 'Pinky' Demons, so I called them 'Pinky Skulls'.

I already knew most of their names through manuals, guidance and magazine (p)reviews. Still, I sometimes use(d) slang/alternative names for monsters, mainly for convenience or variation.

Former Humans - Zombies, Pistol Men
Former Human Sergeants - Shotgunners
Former Human Commandos - Chaingunners
Demons - Pinkies, Piggies
Spectres - Invisible Demons
Lost Souls - Flaming Skulls

I think their technical names are 'blue blobs'. Aren't they in Doom64?

I read the manual before I started playing, so I already knew the names. But then again, I never called them by their names, just yelled and swore alot.

I use to read the manuals before playing games, so I already knew what a lot of the names were.

Couldn't remember all of them (I was 8), so I named them:
Demon/Pinky - Shaved gorilla.
Lost soul - Scully.
Bruiser - Hard-ass.

Doom 2 was the same:
Archvile - Archival (could never remember the name right)
Mancubus - Lisa (a fat lady who used to live next door to us)
Revenant - Skeletor.
Pain Elemental - Mulder.

Interesting, isn't it, how many demons can be related, one way or another, to pigs. ;)

I called cacodemons concades. Dunno

I've also never called a demon a "pinky demon" and I think it SUCKS. They're just demons.

I picked up the manual right away so I didn't really need to think of nicknames, although I sometimes called cacodemons "beholders" and a friend called the demons "dogs". Though I like "pigs" more (which some speedrunners call them). The text file for a wad called them "ass munchers"; that kind of stuck in my head. Not that I've used it actively.

It appears few, if any, people called them "pinky" till DOOM 3 develpment, when the id staff called their new demon that in reference to the old one.

I knew the names before I played the games, but I called the Cacodemon either a "Caco" or "Cock" anyway. When my brother played the game he played a modified version with Bill Clinton's head (forgot the name), so he always called it Bill.

I started calling the Demon "Pinky" after the books: nowadays, it's just Demon. Called the Revenant "Bony" after the books too. Tsk tsk tsk...

Maybe it does, but at least it's descriptive.

I used to play Doom with friends/brothers who didn't always know the correct names.

Shouting "Quick, shoot the Pinky" usually resulted in a double-barrelled blast in the face for the Demon.

Shouting "Quick, shoot the Demon" usually resulted in confusion.

I'd read up on the game before playing but that didn't stop me giving most of the monsters nicknames.

Former Humans = Zombies
Demons = Pinkys
Lost souls = Skulls
Cacodemons = Cacos
Revenants = Bones
Mancubus = Fatso
Arch-Vile = Archie or Bastard
Barons of Hell = Bruisers (from the Doom Bible)
Spider Mastermind = Spidey
Cyberdemon = Cybie

Wandering off-topic - it wasn't until I bought a Wolf 3D hint manual that I discovered the SS Guards aren't saying "Two shovels!" or "I'm leaving". :-)

Well, the baron of hell is also (mostly) pink.

Because the pig is called "demon" I never like it when people use "demons" for the monsters in general. Even the manuals do it occasionally, which makes me look at them with some skepticism.
