termrork Posted November 16, 2008 Hello everybody, I'm new in this forum, but I've played DOOM for a long time. And I want to play throught DOOM2 in a very short time. But first of all i've got some questions: 1.Which program should I use to play DOOM2, that the speedrun will be accepted? 2.How can I record it? 3.The best time I could find in C-N was 26,09, but is this really the best time ever played ("world record")? //without any tools It would be nice if I could play it on WinXP. Could anybody help me? 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted November 16, 2008 To be accepted in this forum or at DSDA, record with any engine that you like. Having said that, there is a definite preference for engines that emulate Doom2.exe, as this makes direct time comparisons more meaningful. So that would mean prboom+ with -complevel 2 or chocolate-doom, if you prefer not to use the "vanilla" exe. To be accepted at compet-n, you must record with Doom2's Doom2.exe. That might mean that you need to run it under Dosbox if you use XP, but that depends on which service pack or upgrades you have installed. Some XP users can run Doom2.exe just fine, albeit normally with sound turned off. Radek's 26:09 is indeed still the fastest normally-recorded Doom2 UV movie run. Regarding how to record, read the sticky threads in this forum, and if you then have specific questions, ask them. But the command line to record a doom2 run on UV would be: doom2 -warp 01 -skill 4 -record 30uvxxxx or analogously with ports, e.g.: prboom-plus -iwad doom2.wad -warp 01 -skill 4 -complevel 2 -record 30uvxxxx 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 16, 2008 Thank you Grazza this helped me a lot. But there are still some questions : 1.I'm using DOSbox now and I'm able to record demos. but does compet-n really accept it when I'm using an emulator? 2.I made a test-demo, could you tell me if it would be accept?(DOOM2) http://www.file-upload.net/download-1257305/30UVXXXC.LMP.html 3.Is a demo file enough for an offical record? 4.Are there any settings who aren't allowed, e.g. gamma correction? 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted November 16, 2008 Your executable is version 1.666. You can get the latest one, version 1.9, from the free shareware package. It's called DOOM.EXE but it's the very same executable that runs DOOM II. You can put a copy of the executable in your DOOM II directory and rename it to DOOM2.EXE. 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted November 16, 2008 The iwad also needs to be version 1.9, if you intend to record iwad demos, as some of the maps were altered. For that, you'll need an upgrade patch. And Dosbox is fine. It's emulating DOS, it's true, but then so is Windows XP. See the compet-n rules for further information if you intend using any settings or tools that are out of the ordinary. Always include a text-file with a demo. Say what wad it is on, who recorded it, what program was used, and what the category and time are. 0 Share this post Link to post

His seems to be version 1.9 already, as I played his demo using v1.9 (having hacked its version mark) and it worked properly till he died and quit in level 4. 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 16, 2008 ok thank you very much. Could you check this demo if I got everything? http://www.file-upload.net/download-1258433/DEMOTEST.LMP.html 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted November 17, 2008 As far as the game version is concerned, I would say so. 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 17, 2008 ok thank you two. now it's only up to me :) maybe I'll be able to beat it... 0 Share this post Link to post
gggmork Posted November 17, 2008 I assume you're referring to ultraviolence. Vile did a disturbingly skilled (as usual) nightmare run in 29:56 if I'm not mistaken. 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 19, 2008 Yes this is true, and I meaned UV. Sry if it was not clear. The best time in UV is 26,09 and in my opinion it is not incredible to beat this time :) But we will see. 0 Share this post Link to post
Mr.TF Posted November 23, 2008 termrork said:and in my opinion it is not incredible to beat this time :) But we will see. It doesn't seem to.... But try to make a TooYoung movie run first, compare the total times, and afterall realize how harder UV would be. :))) 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 26, 2008 :) I know, it is hard to beat that time. Radek made a good run. But it is not perfect and I know I am able to beat it... it is only the time which is missing me :( I am going to make a run between 25:30 and 26:00. First of all about 25:59, but im not sure if I will beat it soon. 0 Share this post Link to post
Mr.TF Posted November 26, 2008 Hmm, you are quite confident, but okey... :) I guess you should try to implement MAP21 glide trick, because it's not too hard and it's possible to try it again a few a times, if you miss it. It would save quite much time, and the record beating would be much easier. :) If I remember well, it is also mentioned by Radek in one of his demo descriptions. 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 26, 2008 Map21 mh... my usually time is 45 seconds so i save 11 seconds but with this trick I could save about 28 seconds wow that is a lot more than in map13,27 or 30 :) but in my first run I won't include such tricky tricks which makes me confuse if they do not work in a run. After I've beaten it I could use them. There are some other tricks I don't want to use in the next runs: MAP19: blue key jump MAP22: bars glide MAP23: barrel row jump MAP24: jump to exit (how does it work???) MAP26: yellow key jump thank you a lot, I thought it is such dificult but it worked at the third time :) 0 Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted November 26, 2008 Have you actually made any runs yet? Radek is a superb player who put a lot of time into this until he made things looks very deceptively easy (I saw him attempting a 30uv in Prague...). If you haven't already got a lot of speedrunning experience, don't expect to find the task you have set yourself to be at all easy. But good luck, of course. You asked about the map24 trick in the final room. It's a weird one for sure, but somehow the player get a wallrun-type speed boost from there being a little ledge, even though it is the other side of an impassable linedef. For a description by one of its discoverers (along with similar pages for other tricks) look here. 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 29, 2008 No, I have never made such a run which is as good as his one. And I have never said that it will be easy, I know for someone who has nothing to do with speedrunning, would think that he makes very much mistakes, bot nothing speacial that would be hard. But I know that this isn't the truth, because his movement / tricks are very good, and it is very hard to beat this time. I have only said that it isn't IMPOSSIBLE to beat his time. I have played DOOM2 NM speed since feburary, and I have been training for a 30UV run for three months now. I played each map sequaly and in a row and I know my times and his times. And my way through DOOM2 differ a bit from Radek's ones, so I can save in these lvls a lot of time : 13,21 and 27 Yes I said that I will be able to beat his time, but I think without optimism it is impossible to do such runs :) 0 Share this post Link to post
tatsurd-cacocaco Posted November 29, 2008 One run looks easy, but it is not actually easy. Perhaps, everyone has. Especially when watching Radek's run, Vile's run and Sedlo's run... 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted November 29, 2008 Yes of course it isn't easy, we are talking about the best ever played time... :) 0 Share this post Link to post
VinceDSS Posted December 25, 2008 It is quite easy to beat radek's 30uv2609 times playing each map one by one. Doing it in one single run is quite another thing. Though I agree, no movies at the Compet-N are unbeatable. 0 Share this post Link to post

The total time of all the fastest UV-Speed records in Doom2 is about 18 min. (excluding normal exit of lv15, secret exit of lv31, and lv32) 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted December 27, 2008 sure, it is easy to say you could beat the time when you are better in each single level, above all when you don't look on your health or ammo at the end of your level. but when you had calculated how much health and ammo you should have for the next level, and you are faster, then you could affirm you are able to beat it And I had calculated it and I don't play single levels, ich play e.g. : lvl 01-06, 06-12, 12-22, 22-30 :) 0 Share this post Link to post
TimeOfDeath Posted December 27, 2008 Still, being able to beat it and actually beating it are two totally different things. Can you post a demo of your fastest run or a crashed run? 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted January 2, 2009 No I'm very sorry about that but I havn't got such demos 0 Share this post Link to post
tatsurd-cacocaco Posted January 2, 2009 Yon can enter the second fastest record demo as for full movie on UV. First of all, your target of time should be below 26:57 which is Vile's record. 0 Share this post Link to post
eargosedown Posted January 10, 2009 Theres a lot of negativity going on here. If the OP thinks he can do it, then I say 'Go for it'. 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted January 10, 2009 I don't see any negativity. Just people pointing out things are harder than they appear, with how and why that is. 0 Share this post Link to post
termrork Posted January 10, 2009 I never said I am able to beat it... I am not sure that I will beat it in 100 years... I've only said it is possible and with a lot of luck and a lot of exercise, it could work so please don't think how I could dare to say I am better than Radek... I never said that ! I wouldn't say it if I have beaten it... I will never say it... so please critisize me of these points and I can imagine how hard it is to beat this run but there is faster run possible... and I want to work on such a run, I dont know if I could ever beat it... my aim is a short DOOM2 run... if it is under 26:09 it's good but if not... it's good too (it should be under 30mins :) ) I only want to do it for myself 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted January 10, 2009 Go ahead, take your time. If you manage a good run, whether the record or not, it will be appreciated! 0 Share this post Link to post
