The Sympathiser

Recommended Posts

Here's a monster so evil, even Torm wouldn't put him in the Beastiary :)

Inspired by "Judge Dredd: The Exo-Men" in progs 111/112 of 2000AD...

Meet the scourge of law-abiding societies...

The Sympathiser!

You don't dare ask if this guy is "some sort of bleeding-heart liberal" ... because he is! This punk doesn't care how many victims a criminal has murdered, tortured or abused; only that the aggressors rights are held to be more important than those of their victims. He believes that even demons can be rehabilitated; anyway, they had a tough childhood and their mothers probably didn't love them! Although unarmed, in the long term this creep is definitely more dangerous to society than all the terrorists, drug-dealers and armed robbers put together!

Get out your Lawgiver, er SSG, and sentence him to death :)

Using the Covert-Ops hostage sprites as a base, the Sympathiser is an unarmed but HIGHLY annoying NPC for all DOOM variants; a pastiche of bearded bleeding-heart liberals who, from the instant that he sees or hears any player, continually whines about the civil rights of demons from Hell!

Their mothers didn't love them!

Enjoy it, creep :)

Sorry this doesn't get my attention. I'd have prefer a character that only follows you, has no attack frames, and never turn into attackers. This at least may have a use on some wad.

This is very nice and all but does there really need to be a thread (that contains a gigantic description) about a decorate monster that anyone skilled in decorate could have made?

Does there really need to be a forum about doom levels that anyone skilled in mapping could have made? :-P

To the monster: it looks good and it could be used in a wad where allies are fighting against monsters with the sympathiser running around. Would be funny I guess!

EDIT: It would be better, if you added the word “monster“ in the thread title, so everyone knows what you are talking about, when looking at the forum index :-P !

The "attack" frames are purely there to guarantee that he doesn't whinge at bare walls or into thin air - note that he's incapable of doing any damage to you by himself. I guess the range could be tweaked so that he whines at you from a distance.

This less a discussion thread and more of an announcement - the screenies are a courtesy as many people believe in a "no screenies, no download" rule. If a mod feels that there is a better forum for plain announcements with minimal comment needed, by all means move this there. If I could be sure of /newstuff happening on a regular basis, I probably wouldn't have bothered - just let dethz0r rip it to shreds :)

Oh and it isn't that simple DECORATE: getting it all to mesh together took a lot of work - it's easy with pure monsters, they just grunt; the sympathiser utters real sentences (taking several seconds to say) which must all be synchronised correctly. If anybody wants to improve/simplify the code, be my guest - as long as I can use the resulting monster myself :)

Makes for an interesting change, a monster that attempts to aggravate you to death.
Try experimenting with meleerange <value> to make him whine from a distance.
