Using DECORATE objects in maps

Recommended Posts

Ok, this is a really dumb question, and I should know how to do this, but I still can't figure out how to build a new map using things like DECORATE objects without making the map, merging it with the other WAD in XWE and going back into the Builder.

Or is this how you're supposed to do it?

You can just open up the existing map in XWE and add a decorate lump via Entry -> New

However, you can't edit the .wad with two programs, so you'll have to Close Map in doombuilder first.

There are two other possibilities.

1. Just alt-tab to Slumped or XWE or whatever to look the doomednums of the things you want to place on the map. As you know, the doomednum is the number that comes after the actor's name; if there is no number it cannot be placed in a map editor at all. For example, "actor Cacodemon 3005" has doomednum 3005. Once you know that, you can place it on the map by directly editing the thing number; DB will tell you it's an unknown map thing but what matters is that the game will know what it is.

2. Write a configuration file for your resources. Just copy the appropriate ZDoom/GZDoom/Skulltag configuration file (depending on whether your mod will be for Doom, Heretic, Hexen or Strife), and edit it with a text editor to add the new DECORATE things to the list. Use the existing listed map things as examples.

I like this idea. Thanks.
