Why dogs can't have viagra

Hell Hound

Canine abominations introduced in Namco's 1993 Sega Genesis/Megadrive Splatterhouse 3 video game. They are one of the new monster species that the protagonist, Rick, will have to deal with as he races to save his wife, Jennifer, and son, David, from the clutches of the Evil One.

A Hell Hound can inflict considerable damage with its bite, but the beast also has two deadlier attack options at its disposal: First, it can vomit up volumes of acidic bile; this foul-smelling, green fluid dissolves soft tissue on contact. Second, the intestine-like structure mounted underneath a Hell Hound's body houses a long, retractable, barbed appendage. The creature can extend this concealed organ a considerable distance, without warning, impaling its prey upon the tip. Despite their mass, Hell Hounds are exceptional leapers; their four powerful legs allow them to jump the entire length of a game screen, or more, with ease. Like most of the monsters in Splatterhouse 3, the Hell Hound sprite gets recycled into an assortment of color variants (I've observed tan, red, and black). Generally speaking, the darker the hue, the tougher the creature version is (i.e., a black Hell Hound can take, and dish out, more punishment than the other two color types). When killed, these demonic dogs often leave behind a heart (restores some of Rick's health) or an eldritch orb (replenishes a portion of Rick's transformation energy); on rare occasions--usually during a "Stage X" bonus level--you might also get an ancient book (grants Rick an extra life).

Materials:
Newsprint, Kleenex, white paper, white/hot glue, wire twist ties, a paperclip, plastic, nail polish, and acrylic paint.

Dimensions*:
(*The size values for this figure will vary to some extent depending on how the joints are positioned. The numbers given assume a neutral squatting pose without any accessories attached.)

4.7 cm/1.9 in. x 4.6 cm/1.8 in. (widest point x highest point)

Articulation:
Nineteen points; jaw, neck (2), hips (4), knees (8), and ankles (4).

Time:
Roughly five-and-a-half days; March 22-27, 2009.

Here is a trio of mid-construction photos. The first image was taken on the third day of this project (March 24), and the next two on the following day. As per my usual, I ended up losing a piece whilst messing around with it, the lower jaw (notice that it's missing in the first photo--the absent fourth leg in said image, on the other hand, wasn't mislaid, I just hadn't sculpted it yet). To tell the truth, I actually misplaced the entire head, but I was able to recover the larger top portion after a thorough search--good thing too, I was in no mood to re-sculpt both. The mandible depicted in the bottom pair of photos is the new one I made to replace the first (as I write this, I still haven't found the original).

For comparison purposes, below are several images of Hell Hounds taken from the Splatterhouse 3 video game.

This is awesome. These guys were not easy to kill, at least the black ones weren't.

Your rendition of the hell hound is amazing. The pose with the appendage coming out from the bottom is stunning, as if the creature is putting a lot of emphasis on attacking.

It differs from the game sprite in a few ways (which I'm sure your aware of).

1-No slime drippings from mouth, bottom, etc.

2- Veins are absent.

3-Gloss of the skin can be seen on the game sprite (this gives the skin a more organic look I suppose you could say)

BUT... I didn't list these to say that your sculpture should have them. Your peice is awesome. I for one like the difference. Don't know really how to describe it, but just gives that touch of MmM that makes it badass.

Coopersville: I feel #3 is the best, largely because of its nonlinear gameplay, but #1 & #2 are both cool too.

Inferno: I don't mind the critique--if an artist can bask in his/her accolades, then they'd better be able to accept criticism as well.

I nixed the veins 'cuz I felt they made the figure too busy, plus, painting fine lines on something this small isn't easy--I was afraid of messing up and having to redo the brown/tan base coat (I actually did start adding veins on the neck at one point, but didn't like them and ripped 'em off). I would have liked to do some dripping blood/slime on the jaw/body, but that stuff would be way too delicate and easy to break, particularly when manipulating the articulation, on something this small--on a static version, things would be different. Had I gone with the red color scheme, I probably would have gone over the body with a gloss coat to give it a raw-flesh look, but, for the brown, I felt a matte/flat finish looked better. When I was a less experienced painter, I used to like to do everything in gloss, but, now that I'm older, and hopefully wiser, I can see the benefits of doing different finishes for contrast.

And here's something I drew last night, a Succubus from Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. No. 2 pencil, colored pencil, and pen on 9" x 12" white paper (excess empty space cropped out for this digital version).

If you feel that fascist red balls of necroplasm shouldn't be able to dictate whether or not you can see feminine demon anatomy in all its glory, than you can see the uncensored version here:

What did you use to colour that Succubus with? Chalks or coloured pencil and napkins?

Looks awesome by the way, the anatomy is something I envy on an artistic level, it is so hard to get right. Anatomy as in the size and proportions of the body, not muscle contour and body position.

That's sick MmM! I saw it a while ago, but didn't have time to post as I only seemed to have a few minutes to see what I want on the internet.

I personally like the red version better. just looks more demonic and grotesque, like something out of 'the thing'. I also like the succubus you drew. BTW did you get any of the Castlevania action figures from NECA?

Macro11_1:
No. 2 pencil, colored pencil, and pen on white drawing paper. Originally, I had cleaned the picture up a bit in an art program (GIMP), but, then, I decided to just leave it like it was, smudges and all--I'm a messy artist, so my work might as well reflect that, rather than trying to hide it. There's some problems with the anatomy in my opinion. For one thing, I went overboard with jutting her posterior out, and, as a consequence, the lower legs are too elongated. I also think the back and lower arms could have been done better, but, overall, I guess the anatomy is decent.

Shapeless:

I think all of the color schemes, in-game, for the Hell Hound are good. I really had a hard time picking which one I was going to do; in the end, I went with the brown because that's the default color I think of when I picture the creature.

Nah, I haven't gotten any of the NECA Castlevania figures. They look brilliant, but none of the stores where I live carry them, and it'd get rather pricey to order them online (probably about $20 per figure, counting shipping, so, about $80 for the full set of four figures). I haven't been buying too many toys these days with the insane price increases that have been going on for the last couple of years--mostly I've been buying PS2/GBA games with my disposable income. It's a bummer the Succubus toy is censored too . . .

Yeah, I saw the figures at Sunrise Records the other day, and I was going to make some sort of joke as to why yours looked nothing like it.

They had to censor it due to some legal thing, but they glued the breast piece with cheap glue that can be unglued with nail polish remover. you know that succubus face looks strangely familiar. why do I feel like I know her?....

Coopersville: The SotN and DoS succubi are supposed to look different, seeing as how they're from separate games. However, as shape-shifting is one of her powers, technically, I suppose they could be the same creature.

Shapeless: I seem to recall people saying that, even if you remove the bustier top on the toy, it still doesn't look right--I don't know if they removed the nipples or what. I haven't seen a picture of the toy with the top removed (just a pic of it at a comic book convention at the NECA booth with a piece of tape over her breasts). Speaking of which, looking at the game sprite, I don't think she wears panties either (just the corset, thigh-high boots, and gloves), so NECA's version is inaccurate in that respect as well.

I used a photo of a woman from an adult video catalog as a still-life model for the Succubus drawing, so, if you watch a lot of said stimulating material, maybe you've seen her. I don't know what her name was, although, if you're really interested, I can have a look and see if the movie description text gives a list of the "actresses". She was blond anyway.
