flower pig Posted April 29, 2009 I spent about an hour fooling around with XWE to replace the names of the skill levels in Doom 2. Unfortunately, when I shrank my BMP images to fit they wound up looking pretty terrible. I haven't been able to find any tutorial or guide to this. Does anyone know of one, or have some advice? 0 Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted April 29, 2009 Did you use the Doom letters or make your own letters? If you made your own, you're probably using colors not in the Doom palette. Try using the XWE's color remap. If you've got Photoshop I can tell you how to make it use the Doom palette. If you're using Doom letters I have to ask why you had to scale them down, as they should already be the size you want. 0 Share this post Link to post
flower pig Posted April 29, 2009 Thanks for replying. I didn't use the Doom letters. I used a stencil font. The colors weren't the issue, rather everything just wound up looking badly aliased. 0 Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted April 29, 2009 Hmm. Unfortunately, I can't think of any way other than working them by hand. Hopefully someone else has an easier way. 0 Share this post Link to post
Torn Posted April 29, 2009 You can use DoomWord. It's thread is located here. Note: Oh, I didn't see it wasn't the normal Doom font. 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted April 29, 2009 Your best bet is to use something rather simplistic as a base if you're going to resize it. Making more detailed stuff look good in low resolution is not always easy. 0 Share this post Link to post

flower pig Posted April 29, 2009 Thanks guys. I got it working with DoomWord. Later I'll try using a smaller base font or something. 0 Share this post Link to post
Stego Posted April 29, 2009 I use Photoshop...how do you tell it to use a particular palatte? 0 Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted April 29, 2009 Open your XWE folder and make sure there's a folder in there called PALETTES. Then open Photoshop. In Photoshop go to Image->Mode->Indexed Color. A box will pop up. At the top you will see "Palette:" with a scroll down list. Pull down the list and choose "Custom". Another box will pop up, click "Load". Navigate to your PALETTES folder and choose "doom.act". Now any color you choose will be converted to the nearest Doom palette color when you color on the canvas. A downside to this is that most of the tools disable with a restricted palette, so it's usually best to make your picture, switch to the palette, then fix it up. 0 Share this post Link to post
Stego Posted April 30, 2009 noted. thanks for the tips! on a semi-related note, i never realized how incredibly small some of these .bmp files are and it tends to make editing incredibly painstaking (which i already assumed it would be). Is it possible to make a larger image that will load to the confines of what the program wants? For ex: custom fonts 0 Share this post Link to post
