RESOLVED: What's in the original Doom 2 folder?

Recommended Posts

It has come to my attention that I have 327 items in my /Doom 2 folder (including 14 subfolders). Which begs the question: what's in the original Doom 2 folder, the one that you download from id.com? All I can think of is Doom 2.WAD, Doom95.exe, and probably a .bak file.

Does anyone have a "pure" doom 2 folder?

Let's have a look...

DEFAULT.CFG DM.CFG
DM.DOC DM.EXE DMFAQ66A.TXT DMFAQ66B.TXT DMFAQ66C.TXT
DMFAQ66D.TXT DOOM2.EXE DOOM2.WAD DWANGO.DOC DWANGO.EXE
DWANGO.SRV DWANGO.STR HELPME.TXT IPXSETUP.EXE MODEM.CFG
MODEM.NUM MODEM.STR ORDER.FRM README.TXT SERSETUP.EXE
SETUP.EXE
It really depends on whether you mean Doom2 or Doom95.

It also depends if you're installing from early v1.666 disks or CD, or you've patched up to v1.9, or have a modern Doom95 install.

Nixot's got the DOS essentials there, which is how it should be :)

Hmm.. everytime I've installed doom I just scrapped everything else and fished out the IWAD.

Pretty much that.

But then, how does one install older mods that aren't just wads? It is a little irritating that the older ones have some convoluted install procedure that "requires" the doom 2 folder.

Most of them are just a DEH file. You can add this to the WAD as a DEHACKED lump, or most sourceports (including later Vanilla exes) let you launch them with -file name.wad -deh name.deh

I pretty much assumed as much... but I wasn't sure. I don't know anything about how to build a modification for doom, so I don't know what these old install programs are supposed to do.

vanilla never supported Dehacked.

Yes, originally you had to use dehacked to make a new, hacked version of doom2.exe

well if you are talking about doom95 running the doom 2 iwad from the doom collectors edition disk then:
doom95.exe
doomcfg.dll
doomipx.dll
doomlnch.dll
doommdm.dll
doomser.dll
dplay.dll
Msvbvm50.dll
doom2.wad

Then in a seperate folder named Extras/Help/Manual is:
DOOM 2 Manual.pdf

It does, and in the strictest sense. It just doesn't read DEH file patches during startup and they must be applied beforehand to a copy. Support doesn't mean "has a command line parameter that reads the output of DeHackEd or reads a DEHACKED lump in PWADs."

Incidentally, it's the only one which fully supports it, aside from Chocolate, which has imitated it quite on purpose. More advanced ports tend to lack a few text string replacements. For example, in Doom you can tell the game to display one graphic at the end of episode 1 and another after one of the demos in the demo sequence, when normally they are the same. Boom and others won't read that DeHackEd change, and all you can do for them is change the graphic, which will show up the same way in both places.
