I haven't tried it, but I've heard of it a lot.

Generally I really think colleges do well as Doom levels. I don't know how's out there in well developped countries, but the college where I go has the same style as Doom 2 maps - distinguishable architecture, dark, colourless, empty halls, using rudimentary WOODPANEL or plaster not to look too cavernous, windows broken, mounds of garbage [basements only], old objects dumped in corridors... It's the best place ever possible So far. Too bad the outside is pretty, not dead [oops].

With the availability of Google Earth/Maps and I wonder why more of these kinds of maps haven't start existing yet.

GothicDM 2 has several of them. Compare MAP14 with this and MAP18 with this, for example. MAP10 is based on the crypt of a monastery as well but I can't find any photos of that.

If you accept the proposition that a map based on a painting must be a real place then this (the second map) materialise this .
Not mentioned in the two links is CAVALEIROS - MACAÉ which seems quite accurate, you can check cava.wad out yourself here.
