40oz Posted December 4, 2009 Scenario: You're locked in a cell. You have Food, Water, Clothing, etc. (Enough to last the remainder of your life) You have one computer, it doesn't have a familiar operating system and it doesn't have any basic utilities prepackaged with it to use. There are no games or any tools or apps or anything to use with it. You get a limited supply of Doom-related programs to pick from to put on the computer that will be your only resource for entertainment for the rest of your life. Choose wisely. #1: You can have ONE IWAD. DOOM1.WAD (Shareware Doom. [because you can.]) DOOM.WAD (Ultimate Doom) DOOM2.WAD (Doom 2) TNT.WAD (Final Doom: Evilution) PLUTIONA.WAD (Final Doom: The Plutonia Experiment} HERETIC.WAD (Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders) HEXEN.WAD (HeXen: Beyond Heretic) STRIFE.WAD (Strife) #2: You can have TWO Source Ports. Doom.exe, prBoom, Chocolate Doom, Eternity, JDoom, ZDoom, GZDoom, Skulltag, Odamex, ZDaemon, etc. #3: You can have FIVE editing Utilities. MAP EDITORS Doom Builder, Slade, DEU, etc. LUMP MANAGEMENT EDITORS SLumpEd, XWE, etc. IMAGE EDITORS MS Paint, Irfanview, Paint.NET, GIMP, Adobe Photoshop, etc. SOUND EDITORS sndrec.exe, Audacity etc. MUSIC COMPOSITION Anvil Studio, Midi Maker, Cakewalk etc. OTHER DOOM UTILITIES Slige, Oblige, DoomWord, etc. #4 You can have at most TEN PWADs. You know what I'm talking about.Notes: You do not have internet access. Multiplayer modes must be played with yourself or with bots. By five editing utilites, you have to pick five specific programs, not five out of the six capitalized categories I'll list my 'Survival Kit' when I think this over a little more. Feel free to post up questions about rules and parameters and stuff. 0 Share this post Link to post
Zetta Posted December 4, 2009 Doom2 GZDOOM, Skulltag Doom Builder2, SlumpEd, Adobe Photoshop, Audacity, Anvil Studio Too many to pick from, i would grab a pile of them and hide them under my shirt... I win. 0 Share this post Link to post
Ninjalah Posted December 4, 2009 #1. Doom.exe #2. GZDOOM, Skulltag #3. Doom Builder2, SlumpEd, Adobe Photoshop, Audacity, Anvil Studio #4. Can I have 10 packs of all of the PWADS ever? 0 Share this post Link to post
Jodwin Posted December 4, 2009 40oz said:#1: You can have ONE IWAD. DOOM2.WAD - A safe choice 40oz said:#2: You can have TWO Source Ports. ZDoom and ZDaemon - Since I'd be shut off from everyone else, the only point (for me) to pick prboom is lost (which is compatibility). ZDoom's improved editing capabilities would be much more preferable in this setting. ZDaemon for its bots and multiplayer modes. 40oz said:#3: You can have FIVE editing Utilities. Doom Builder 1, XWE, Paint Shop Pro 9, An Easy to Use Midi Composer, latest Obhack 40oz said:#4 You can have at most TEN PWADs. Hell Revealed 2, The upcoming final Deus Vult 2 with all the maps (I wouldn't pick the shorter DV 2 though, if to-be-released wads aren't allowed, then Kama Sutra goes here), Killing Adventure, Scythe 2 final, Diaz, Super Sonic Doom, Claus1024, GothicDM, latest Drown in Blood and Alien Vendetta 0 Share this post Link to post

Jodwin Posted December 4, 2009 Other people said:Sound editors I wonder, what are you going to do with those on a blank-slate computer that should be assumed to have no sound recording equipment: You can't look for new sound effects from the net and you can't record new ones either. At best you could try to modify the ones you could rip from the wads, and that might not get you very far. Similarly any non-midi composing suite would be close to useless unless they would be assumed to come with samples as well. 0 Share this post Link to post
ArmouredBlood Posted December 4, 2009 -Plutonia.wad - everything from doom2 but has plutonia textures/music/maps to enjoy and mod. -skulltag and prboom - my preferred source port and a port to record stuff and get the 'old' doom experience. Recording stuff can be a fun challenge to pass the time and review old wads. -XWE, DB2, paint shop pro 7, some random midi composer program that works well and I can manage to do stuff in, and the latest version of oblige. I might've replaced that with a C++ editor if I actually knew any code so I could mod skulltag and the plutonia iwad to do a bunch of random stuff. -HR/2, Sunder, thunderpeak (huge idea generator), Scythe 2, AV, Kama Sutra 1/2 (haven't actually played those 2 yet), the biggest gun mod pack around (only know of alando's 9+ sets, but has repeats) and the gothicDM textures. The thing I'd regret most is I won't have my saxophone -.- BTW Do we have a digital camera with a usb cable? Be useful since my multi-viewport cell would be traveling the universe ;) 0 Share this post Link to post

Abyssalstudios1 Posted December 4, 2009 ~Plutonia.wad. More enjoyable than Doom 2, and more of a challenge than TNT. ~Skulltag and prBoom. Skulltag for the bots and extra goodies (and a lot of gzDoom compatibility), and prBoom... I'm not sure. ~Doom Builder 2, XWE, Photoshop, Fruity Loops (latest version, whatever that may be), and Cakewalk Express. ~Alien Vendetta, upcoming DVII, KDizD, Claustrophobia 1024, WoS, Hell Revealed, Plutonia 2, and... Kyka Posted December 5, 2009 1) TNT. Because I can. 2) ZDoom, Eternity. (the name is kinda appropriate for this Scenario) 3) DoomBuilder 2, SlumpEd, Wadmerge, Photoshop, ProTools. 4) -Ultimate Simplicity. -KDiZD. -CC3. -Austerity. -ZPACK. -The recent Greenwar release. -MM. -MM2. -AV -If gggmork puts together a single compilation of all those crazy ass idea wads that he does, I'll take that too. Do texture packs cound as pwads? If not, could I take a couple of those too? 0 Share this post Link to post
Nomad Posted December 5, 2009 1.) DOOM2.WAD. Pretty straightforward since like 99% of PWADs utilize DOOM2.WAD 2.) GZDoom. Honestly couldn't see myself using anything else. Maybe PrBoom+ for compatibility with some wads but to this day I've not really needed to use anything other than GZDoom 3.) This is where I hit a roadblock with this scenario. While I do enjoy creating things for Doom, I would have a very hard time coming up with a reason to make anything if I'm the only person ever going to play it. I like to collaborate and share my work with others. That is quite possibly almost entirely the reason I would release anything in the first place. I hate most everything I make myself because I have low self-esteem and am a perfectionist. Although, on the other hand it would break monotony since I only get 10 PWADS at most and could extend the playability of the game before I wanted to kill myself at least a little bit more. So I'll humor this portion: DoomBuilder2, SLumpEd, XWE, Paint Shop Pro 8, and Oblige. 4.) - Gothic texture resource wad - Xaser's "Psychic" mod ... Honestly I can't be arsed to think of more at the moment. I actually haven't played that many PWADs, and most of them I frankly probably wouldn't replay either due to difficulty or just being bullshit. I'm sure Alien Vendetta would go in there somewhere, and maybe Deus Vult 2 since I have played those and enjoyed them well enough. Not much else I'm aware of worth repeated play though. 0 Share this post Link to post

Jodwin Posted December 5, 2009 doomygecko said:Doom Builder 2, XWE, GIMP, Audacity, Anvil Studio, Oblige Hypertension (you didn't say it had to be released!) That's six utilities, and Hypertension is an EDGE mod so you wouldn't be able to play it with your ports. :( TimeOfDeath said (about DiB): Is there a new version? or do you just mean whatever the latest version is? I don't know, I just wanted to pick a few wads with variety and years ago when I still played coop wads, DiB used to be my favorite. 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted December 6, 2009 No true multiplayer or Internet connection? Lame. To avoid suicide, I would first try to look for the red pill to ingest. If that were to fail, I'd more or less ignore the game, or get tired of it after a bit, and choose some editing tools that could help me write literature, compose music and create graphic artwork unrelated to the game, and in the meantime I'd try to hack into the cell's security system to escape. 0 Share this post Link to post

sonic_13 Posted December 6, 2009 1.) Doom2.wad 2.) Zdoom, Skulltag 3.)a.) Doombuilder 1 (as with the second I still can't figure out why all the bad guys act neutral even with all the helpful advice of forum goers) b.) I have no idea how the lump thingies work as I'm a complete newb editor, so whatever the one that comes with Doombuilder is. c.) Photoshop 5.0 d.) Audacity e.) Probably would throw doombuilder 2 in there, with all that time spent in there I'm bound to figure it out (but the help files better come with it). 4.) Argh. I don't even think I've played that many. TnT, Zpack, Plutonia 2, Super Sonic Doom, Whispers of Satan, Alien Vendetta, 2002 ADO, Scythe 2, Hell Revealed 2 (because I suck so bad and it'd keep me entertained for days), Eternal Doom. ...Gah, I'd probably revise this list if I had a better memory of all the hundreds of wads I've played in the past. Then after playing so many hours of Doom, I'd rewire the computer and somehow make it a bomb and blast my way out of there. 0 Share this post Link to post
Creaphis Posted December 6, 2009 Even though I currently live inside of a vast, public sphere, I already find myself with a tendency to simply imagine the end products of my theoretical labours, and the praise that would be given to them, without ever actually beginning the creative efforts that would make these ideas into reality. With practice, and a well-cured insanity, it is possible to derive a similar satisfaction to that which one gets from real creative achievement from these imaginations alone. Therefore, if I were locked in a cell in which there was absolutely no possible audience for my works, and, much worse, absolutely no access to the social aspects of the creative process which I need for artistic labour to be enjoyable, I would soon find all editing utilities to be completely unnecessary. Why bring my crude ideas into flawed reality when, in the realm of the ideal, they are perfect? Why be concerned with physically creating some crude Doom wad when my mind contains richly navigable worlds? Similarly, any existing iwads or pwads would also be unnecessary during my tenure. If I wished to appreciate one of these fine works, I could do so also in the realm of the ideal, where their genius is emancipated from gross, particulate reality. There's something very Hegelian about all of this. Ah, the glorious freedom of the slave. An added benefit of this approach is that, when your captors offer you this paltry collection of entertainments to occupy the remainder of your days, you get to say, "No thanks, I'm good," and chuckle for the next seventy years about how you beat them at their own game. 0 Share this post Link to post
TimeOfDeath Posted December 6, 2009 You so funny. :P Yeah, it wouldn't be as fun to flash your creations when you're the only person who would see them, but I'd be playing/making maps all the time. The scenario sounds pretty effing sweet to me. I don't have to worry about money, food, shelter, clothing, etc., for the rest of my life, and I get to play Doom all day? Sign me up. 0 Share this post Link to post
