Mr_Rodi Posted March 22, 2010 Hey guys Ive just joined (why the hell did I just join now!!) and yes I am a complete noob to doomworld!! I really, really want to get into modding with doom, I am a 3d modeller and animator, but I have never experienced making old school sprites and map making so I would like to ask to anybody who is willing to answer! 1) Where can I find a version of doom that works with window 7and how would I run it? 2)What kind of software/ packages would you use to create sprites/characters for the doom engine and where would I get these? 3) What kind of programs are out there to create levels and maps and where would I find them? Also another final question for 2 and 3, are these compatible with windows 7?? Would really appreciate a reply guys, thankyou!! 0 Share this post Link to post

Also another final question for 2 and 3, are these compatible with windows 7?? Would really appreciate a reply guys, thankyou!! Well first of all hi 1: all source ports work with Windows 7 as far as I know. the only one I've had problems with is Chocolate Doom on fullscreen (but i'm guessing that has something to do with my PC and not the actual program) http://zdoom.org/Download http://grafzahl.drdteam.org/page.php?page=230 http://dengine.net/ http://www.ohloh.net/p/chocolate-doom there are more, just look them up =) 2. well I use WinTEX and XWE. as for editing textures flats or sprites I just use regular paint which comes with every windows version. (it really is a good toll for basic stuff) 3. Doombuilder http://www.doombuilder.com/ and Deepsea http://www.sbsoftware.com/ and yes they all work with Windows 7 0 Share this post Link to post
ArmouredBlood Posted March 22, 2010 1. - read this. It basically comes down to 'buy doom, run, take wad and put in source port'. 2. - wintex was useful for me to rip some textures to mod/copy over so I didn't have to mess with the palette, but if you know how that works, anything like photoshop, paint shop pro, gimp, etc. will work for editing sprites and textures as long as they're palleted correctly and in .bmp. As for getting those into your pwad (never mod the iwad, the actual doom/2.wad), I prefer XWE simply cause I've been using it since I first started messing with textures. There's also slumped, which is more drop-down based as far as my limited use goes, and has some differences in writing textures that causes problems when you open a wad edited in slumped with xwe, but it works just as well, or better if you like the interface. 3. - Doom builder 2 is a great map editor, very easy to use and has lots of features, with plug-in support, if more than 2 people actually make plug-ins for it. You can also try deepsea, although it was rather annoying for me cause it kept doing some tutorial thing and didn't let me do what I want, although I never actually made a map in it. It also has more wad-editing features, like you can mess with the colormap, palette and other random stuff. It's kinda old though. I've also heard of slade, deth, and a few other programs but idk how good they are. 3.1 - DB2, deepsea, XWE, and slumped work on vista, so they'll probably work on win7. I can't say anything about any other editors though. And if you want to run vanilla doom2, dosbox is a good option. Although I ran it fine from the doom95 port I got off id's site for $20 a year or two ago (yes I paid $20 for doom2, it's been so worth it ;). Steam has it for $10. Let's see who posted before my unwieldly answer-everything post ... 0 Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted March 22, 2010 Mr_Rodi said:1) Where can I find a version of doom that works with window 7and how would I run it? Get a source port. They're made for that. See this to help you chose one. Mr_Rodi said:2)What kind of software/ packages would you use to create sprites/characters for the doom engine and where would I get these? Paint.NET and/or Gimp for image editing. Slumped or the next Slade 3 beta for converting them to Doom's formats. Note that some source ports make the conversion step unnecessary. http://slumped.mancubus.net/ http://slade.mancubus.net/ (Slade 3 is currently in-development, but it's going to be very awesome.)Mr_Rodi said:3) What kind of programs are out there to create levels and maps and where would I find them? Doom Builder 2 is currently the unchallenged lord and master of Doom-engine map editing. http://www.doombuilder.com/ Mr_Rodi said:Also another final question for 2 and 3, are these compatible with windows 7?? Doom Builder 2 and Slumped/Slade 3 are compatible with Windows Vista and Windows 7. Other utilities will make you jump through hoops before they deign to run. 0 Share this post Link to post
myk Posted March 23, 2010 Gez said: See this to help you chose one.Heh, I wonder why it links to Compet-n for the PrBoom+ demo format. If anything uses the "Compet-n demo formats", it's Chocolate Doom. PrBoom+ has limit removing vanilla (that is, it can do things not possible in Compet-n demos) plus the Boom and MBF tree and its own derivative. The vanilla accuracy should also be examined and expanded with some notes, because it's not so simple (like, in some senses ZDoom can be more accurate than ZDaemon while not in others, for example.) Maybe I'll mess with it a bit later if I have time... 0 Share this post Link to post
mammajamma Posted March 23, 2010 You said you were a 3D modeler, so you might want to take into account that ports like GZDoom and Skulltag support 3D models (MD2, MD3, and a couple of other formats}. There are other ports with similar support like EDGE, Risen3D, and Doomsday/jDoom, but the former two enjoy a much wider userbase than the latter ports. 0 Share this post Link to post
Cjwright79 Posted March 23, 2010 For the record, I prefer Doom Builder over Doom Builder II. Less is more. 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted March 23, 2010 For the record, the OP's after software that's Windows 7 compatible. 0 Share this post Link to post
Ahcruna Posted March 23, 2010 For the record, Doom Builder 1 is compatible with Windows 7 .... hehe I'm very sorry I got caught up in the rhythm =) meant no harm. 0 Share this post Link to post

GreyGhost Posted March 24, 2010 That surprises me, given the hassles people had with DB1 on Vista. 0 Share this post Link to post
