TC-like wads

Recommended Posts

Hello. I'm looking for wads which are as different as possible from the original game (and still good, of course.) It doesn't have to be a strict total conversion; it can use some of the original assets, as long as it adds a lot of new ones. A good example of what I mean is Legacy of Suffering. You may say this is not very different from original doom in terms of gameplay, but it does have new enemies, weapons, textures, visual effects, room-over-room, extensive scripting, and other advanced gzdoom features. I guess I'm looking for wads that are at least as different from doom as LOS, if not more so. I prefer "modern", "good-looking" wads as opposed to old and/or bizarre/joke wads like Sky May Be, Mockery, etc. Although, I did really like Urban Brawl - that may fall into bizarre/joke, but it's very well made and interesting. So, any suggestions?

I'm playing City of the Damned: Apocalypse right now, and it's another good example of the kind of wad I'm looking for - TC or close-to-TC, unique and interesting situations.

By the way, I'm also stuck. I searched for the answer to my question on these forums, but couldn't find it. How do you get past the church puzzle? I've traversed a path across the tiles that almost gets to the arrow on the other side (2 tiles short), but now every tile adjacent to my path kills me, and I can't jump over deadly tiles. What am I missing here?

Never mind, as usual, posting a question results in immediately figuring out the answer - it wasn't an adjacent tile killing me, it was my next step off the tiles. But now I'm stuck again, in a more open-ended way.

SPOILER ALERT

I have the sand, skull, and diamond, and the book that allows me to translate the one on the altar, and I've just read the one on the altar about using the sand, skull, and diamond to summon Thamuz. So... how do I actually summon Thamuz? How do I use the items? I can't select them from inventory.

I wouldn't say Urban Brawl is a joke or bizarre. It's greatly different from normal Doom in terms of gameplay and aesthetics, but that doesn't make it bizarre or a joke...

You may want to try Star Wars: Chibi Rebellion (in fact, most of LWM's mods are TCs), Void, Happy Time Circus if you liked City of the Damned, Impossible if you like genuinely bizarre mods.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've played Happy Time Circus and I liked it a lot. I've read there was supposed to be a sequel, but I can't find where to download it.

I didn't mean to imply Urban Brawl was a joke wad, just that it's comedy, kind of a satire of '90s beat-em-ups.

I've actually linked you to the sequel.

You may also like "Cold as Hell". It's not hugely different to standard Doom-like play but it definitely has its own feel

You may also find this Half Life TC that I was involved in fun:

And to carry on blowing my own trumpet a little:

Burghead

and a similarly themed and older single level

The last 3 are not particularly weird or spooky, but they are different to standard Doom stuff.

I'd also recommend this recently released WAD.

Sonic Robo Blast 2, it's so different to Doom it doesn't even feel like it's been made in the engine, the giveaway is the Legacy rocket smoke puffs in the first boss area.

CiF3. Basically the old PSX game PO'ed with lame humour, mental RPG elements and bags and bags of cheap. And complete incompatibility with any version of ZDoom released in the last two years.

You have been warned. It's bloody good fun, though.

And there's always the classic.
(Apologies for the shit website, but it's the only one left that has v2.0, the most compatible version)
