The Outskirts (Updated)

Recommended Posts

Update:

Added some new stuff here and there to flesh it out
a bit more, probably about done with it now aside from
tweaking lighting and attempting a deathmatch variant.

The demon trap bit really isn't that hard with the
right approach, so i just clipped a few from the group
that teleports in.

Introducing a new medium-sized (smallish maybe,
but it has a bit of backtracking) Doom2 map with a
focus on efficient playing (won't find mountains
of ammo lying around...). Check readme for details.

This is my first (nearly) finished map, made from
the start with the intention of actually finishing
instead of detailing a few rooms and losing
interest shortly after...as such it's not the most
detailed, but I tried to make it look pretty decent,
yet nostalgic.

Looking for feedback on how it plays, as I've
already played through it a ton of times and have a
pattern ingrained. Might make a few changes
based on feedback, and maybe include an alternate
wad optimized for deathmatch play (I think the layout
might be promising for that with proper adjustments.)

Have an fda. The map is pretty good but I think you put a few too many demons in the fenced off area with the chainsaw, and there're even more that teleport in after you get in there. And the SSG is in a pretty out of the way place. Once I found that though it got a lot easier so maybe it's better to keep it that way. I'm not really a fan of the chainsaw so you'll notice that as soon as I find the berserk I don't even bother picking the chainsaw up, but eh. Also the very last sergeant I killed is in a pretty bad place for the player to notice, just remove him and his alcove.

The part I liked most was the cyber fight and the bits leading up to it, but I'm a sucker for the hell theme so take little from that, heh. Otherwise everything else was decent besides the demon bit - that gets a bit out of hand with only the shotty and maybe the chaingun, and like I said I don't like the chainsaw much.

Your texturing and layout are pretty good, can't really add much detail in vanilla so nice job. Overall I'd give it a 2.5/5, 3/5 since it's your first 'finished' map.

The demon bit was one of my original concerns with the map,
and admittedly it does look a bit too onerous/painful when
the SSG hasn't yet been found; really was on the fence
about that part and forgot after a while.

Thanks for the feedback and the run. Hoping to see a UVMax run
or few pop up when I'm done with it, if I can make it play a little
better :D. My personal best so far is 10:08, but I'm hardly
a runner and am sure it could be done quicker.

I doesn't download for me!

Guess I'll toss it up on mediafire or something as well,
since the rapidshare link will stop working after 10~
downloads anyway; will update in a sec.

There, try the second link.

It's actually a 7zip file, not zip.

Fixed, thanks for pointing that out.
Forgot to change the format in the dialogue.
