Nightmare Doom

Carnival/Circus/Amusement Park themed wads?

Recommended Posts

Besides what you mentioned, the closest that comes to mind is this.

If you want to count Total Conversions as well, Batman doom had a pretty cool funhouse level, and whatdafuck.wad also had a circus map in it.

I think I forgot that one Carnival area from The City of The Damned - Apocalypse and ofcourse the Dark Carnival level from ZBlood (which is based off from the FPS game Blood). Also there's a Waterpark level in the Doom Vacation wad (which is based off from that Duke Nukem Caribbean life's a Beach addon)...

I can't really think of any others

Sounds like Carnival/Circus/Amusement Park themed wads/levels/areas are the least explored grounds within Doom mappers I think...

It's a shame, really, because I think that it could be a good concept for a WAD if executed correctly. Haunted, creepy, eerie Carnivals/Circuses/Amusement Parks could really give players some chills.

I wonder why nobody else thought of this before, it's a great idea.

It would probably be difficult to pull off, but if done properly you could get a dang good WAD.

i remember playing a map in the early-ish years called something like yakworld

except it was from the early years where no maps looked anything like what they were supposed to (except "my-house" wads to an extent)...so it doesn't really resemble a themepark or anything like one to any degree at all.
i am happy to be so useful to you while attempting to be useful to me (by finding this wad again) all at the same time.

Yakworld is a wonderful wad, though I don't think its meant to be a theme park. The starting area would imply otherwise, but past that its definitely just a big Doom map.

I remember "The Last Resort" (tlr19.wad) for Doom 1 by Michael Houston, Greg Houston, Andrew Warrington, & David Sears

http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=13582

This was a deathmatch episode set in an abandoned amusement park. I used to play this all the time with my friends back with Doom v1.666. Only now did I remember it. I haven't played it in years but if my memory is correct this may be exactly what the original poster was requesting with a distinctly Doom-feel.

The story follows...

========================
The Story of Asmodeus...
========================

It was agreed by the Management of the World Resort Fantasy Theme Park that
their artistic director was hard to work with. He was moody and
argumentative, and they had kept him thus far only by virtue of his brilliant
mind. It was he who had conceived the park's many areas: the Old West town,
the Roman Arena, the Shrine, the Funhouse...

He called himself Asmodeus, and he would sometimes sit cross-legged in the
middle of his worlds, with his eyes, focused on nothing, moving frantically
as if in REM. He could see something, but nobody knew what...

It was becoming clear that he would have to be removed. His designs had
become chilling; his eccentric twists would seem to blur the distinction
between fantasy and reality. His ideas no longer seemed safe.
The Management was worried.

After a short and argumentative meeting, Asmodeus was fired. It had seemed
to him like just another abrasive interaction with the Management. He took
no notice of the fact that he was supposed to leave, and it came as a
surprise when Security apprehended him as he headed for the Funhouse.
After Security dropped him outside the gate he stood there for several
minutes, staring with panic and fear through the gate at his park.
Then he disappeared.

The World Resort Fantasy Theme Park had problems. Indeed, Asmodeus' designs
did blur the distinction between fantasy and reality, as strange events began
occuring. In the Old West, a seemingly normal tourist began a shooting spree
that left two people dead and several others injured. Panic ensued when a
lion that had been stolen from the zoo mysteriously ended up in the Roman
Arena. Inexplicably, two clowns hired for the Funhouse began incorporating
blood into their act. A public relations man assured the public that they
had since been fired.

Despite the press releases and an aggressive marketing campaign, nothing was
going to save the park. Speaking for the public's fast-growing fears, one
columnist wrote "Soon children are going to start disappearing..." The World
Resort Fantasy Theme Park went bankrupt, and was boarded up and left to rot.

. . .

Several years later, there was an ad in a newspaper:

±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±
± EXPERIENCE THE ULTIMATE ADVENTURE ±
± ±
± Come see our new park, ±
± Where the chills are so real... ±
± It will be the last resort ±
± you'll ever need to see. ±
± ±
± THE LAST RESORT ±
± ±
± GRAND OPENING: DECEMBER, 1994 ±
±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±±

You read the ad, and you were interested. Now, just through the front door,
you are locked inside. A voice warns you that only one vacationer will get
out alive. The longer you stand there, the greater the chance that
it won't be you.

Long been a favourite of mine.

For the era, and just for the creepy vibe of those maps and music then this wins, hands down.

I've been modifying "The Last Resort" episode to make it render correctly on modern source ports. The hall-of-mirror effects in the last level did not work in ZDoom or OpenGL Skulltag. I also spent way too much time realigning textures and adjusting the height on stairs here and there to make them render better. A few textures were changed where it made sense, but I refrained from making any bold redesigns whenever possible. It sounds relative minor but it took forever due to some odd sector height choices by the original authors. Should I upload the result to idgames?

Hey all. Me and my brother, Grim Reefa, just finished our wad, Whatdafuck05.wad, the other day ago We spent a long time on this wad (1 and a half years) and all of the artwork (sprites, textures, decals) is 100% original, hand drawn and animated by myself and Grim, not to mention we made all the maps and wrote all the decorate code and ACS. Oh, and it's got 2 circus levels now, and you need the shitty net port of GZDOOM known as Skulltag in order to play it, since it has 3d floors and what not.
