Technician Posted January 29, 2011 Why'd you make the prototypes an option? Sure they're great for curiosity sake but I can't play them for more than ten minutes. 0 Share this post Link to post

And as for the question, it depends what you're looking for. From an objective design stance, I think that Hexen maximized the true potential of the Doom engine and created the most consistent and detailed game world, therefore I'd call it the "best," as in the most effective presentation. It's also my favorite of the choices, but I realize not everybody likes the puzzle-based gameplay element as much as I do. It's not that I don't appreciate the straight-forward layouts of Doom, in fact I think most people here prefer them, but I like a more esoteric style of mapping. 0 Share this post Link to post

Well, the Beta is only 3 maps from Doom with different sprites and actors such as the dagger! And Alphas are fun for running through the enemies! 0 Share this post Link to post

I have a few: Chex Quest Hacx (while the least popular, still something) you could split up Doom and Doom 2 (being they use similar but different systems) I also agree with Lut 0 Share this post Link to post

Sharessa Posted January 29, 2011 Doom > Hexen > Heretic > Chex Quest > Doom 2 From a gameplay perspective, I like Heretic more than Hexen because I hated Hexen's switch quests, but I do like Hexen's level design a lot. 0 Share this post Link to post
eargosedown Posted January 29, 2011 I actually put Doom 2 > Doom 1. E1 was fantastic, but E2 was a significant step down, and E3 was kind of meh (I thoroughly dislike E4) whereas Doom 2 had overall pretty neat levels. 0 Share this post Link to post

The beta has some notable gameplay differences, such as the platform movement. I had the most fun with DOOM, so DOOM it is. 0 Share this post Link to post

Yeah, for all except Heretic (the full one is great) and HeXen (the demo sucks), the Shareware levels are the best! Only problem is that it makes you want it by having only 1 avaliable and the endoom scene! 0 Share this post Link to post
yellowmadness54 Posted January 31, 2011 1. heretic 2. Doom 3. Hexen. it was hard to choose. 0 Share this post Link to post
Aliotroph? Posted January 31, 2011 Craziness. Heretic is awful; I hate it. Hexen was fun, but never better than Doom. Doom was far better than Doom II, even if most of E3 sucked. 0 Share this post Link to post

AndrewB Posted January 31, 2011 Hexen due to a strong sense of non-linearity. Fundamentally top-notch level design, almost without exception. It's like John Romero's contribution to Doom multiplied by 5. 0 Share this post Link to post
