Old map showcase

Recommended Posts

All right, I've been thinking a bit and thought it might be interesting for each other to showcase our earlier/earliest maps that are on the archives..so here is is probably one of my earliest levels online:

Doomer99
Contains 5 maps from 1997, WOLF.WAD, MEDIVAL.WAD, CITY.WAD, SLUMS.WAD and ROCKOUT.WAD -- Avoid the remaining content as it's embarrassing graphics replacements.
Half-Lifed -- Touched up in 2009 to fix some errors.
My megawad from 2004 -- I know it's not super old, but it's on the old side.

Community Chest 3 MAP27: Ruby Abyss and MAP15: Clash of Galaxies, in that order, released in 2007. Those two are my earliest releases ever.

The layouts of Diet 32in24 MAP02: On Two Sides and MAP16: The Million Dollar Pyramid were also designed before the release of CC3 (a month earlier, in fact,) but the WAD itself was released a year later (due largely to inactivity on behalf of the first compiler.)

Well, I won't go digging out my really old, unreleased late 90s and early 00s maps, and I'd need a time machine to get the ones that I no longer have at all, so here's a link to my first release:

http://www.phobus.servegame.com/doom/ph_scrge.zip

The 23 maps were made around 2001-2005, the wad itself being first released at the end of 2005. Maps are featured in the order they are made, with MAP31 being the most recently made map, and therefore being very different to all of the others. I'd consider it mostly fun, in an old way, with a lot of the mapping being mid 90s in quality at best. Still proud of the CREDITS map though.

If you want something a bit different, the original MAP31 to Scourge was Warpzone, a leviathan of a map with ~1200 monsters or so. It was taken out after the original players on the ZDoom forums noted how unsuitable it was compared to everything else. This was definitely more architecture/detailing than anything else and I'd not try and say its much fun to play these days. Quite a slog to get through too. Here's a link for those with 50 minutes or more to kill:

I'm a 2010/2011 mapper. I see you will interest about me in 2015 =P.

Redoom -- First released at /idgames archieve.

I actually made this ago before month 10, so my mapping was shitty. It didn't impress anyone at all. And the reviews were ........

You can compare it with pitfalls.wad (pitfall2.zip) and see the big difference :)

It was originally part of a 3 or 4 map episode I was working on in my spare time. I started on the first maps sometime in '03/'02 and had 2 or 3 maps finished before I started on this. This was the only surviving map though and I finished it sometime around 2006. I think the others were lost when we had to send in our old PC for repairs because they wiped the hard drive :<. I must have had this map on a thumb drive or something at the time because I was still working on it. I really wish I had those other maps still...they were a little better than this map.

I realize that I don't have a download link to this map. It's pretty scary though so I won't bother uploading it for right now :P. This was my very first attempt at a DM map back when I found Skulltag. I was screwing around with all of the fancy bells and whistles at the time so there's not much in the way of gameplay.

Everything else I made before 2003 is long, long gone. Most of them were just scraps anyways. There are probably a few more older maps that would be worth seeing though. I have all of them listed here.

Heh, DEU 5.21, those were the days... PC speaker sounds and joining your vertices with lines to make a shape, before creating a sector enclosed by the lines. Think the current method in DB is a bit quicker :P

Played through E1 - it shows its age, but is very tough, and I certainly enjoyed it! The Evil Dead quotes and other new sounds were quite amusing too, and the Metallica MIDIs were like old friends :P

*holding BFG* "Run away!"
*fires*
*dead zombiemen* "I'm being repressed!"

Technically I made this wad before I made my first map, but I decided to throw away pride and release it years later. Just a simple crappy graphics replacement, consisting of sprites that I pretty much ripped from a sonic game. It is the only thing that ever came out of this. (Hello first post!) Pretty embarrassing, but I am all up for embarrassing myself.
Shadow Androids

And now, for my first actual map:

Hell Pit. From 1996. Was supposed to be for my megawad, dropped for obvious reasons, mostly the nonsensical ending.

Deep Core. Was map2 from megawad, made a little later than Hell Pit. Timestamps might be off on these since I had to remove megawad resources when I uploaded them. When I get around to it there are several more abandoned maps, fragments and stuff I could strip down and release.

The biggest problem is the odd progression of these maps, random textures, unbalanced gameplay. I later rebuilt Deep Core in 2005, the new version is really nice. ;)

It shows it's age indeed! Hardly even remember makin' em to be honest. Long time ago. But I still have fun with 'em from time to time.

On a side note, thanks for the 5* on Awakening :)

My first release was weird.wad. Originally uploaded as an attachment to the DoomCenter forums. Looks like I made it on 28th June, 2001. Almost a decade ago.
