lazygecko Posted June 11, 2011 PC Speaker sounded a lot more obnoxious than I remember. I've instead decided to go for NES style with a mixture of blips and downgraded samples. Whipped up a quick proof of concept you can try: http://www.sendspace.com/file/495t9j Terribly unoptimized as you can see from the filesize. UAC Ultra - a bit (?!) dark 4. I got it, and also a Gravis gamepad. Although when I look back on it, my family just got me those presents because they wanted to use them too :| I don't know many people who's mom played Wolfenstein 3D. We were signed up for Apogee's demo disk thing or something and I used to watch her play, but I was too scared. The first time she ever got to Hans Grosse I ran to my room and hid under the bed. I remember getting a lot of classic DOS game demos in the mail, include Blake Stone, the original two Duke Nukems, and so forth. I vaguely remember reading (long ago) about a way to build a parallel port DAC "sound card", which would have been much cheaper than Adlib, SB, etc. Never had a need for it though, since my machines always had some kind of sound chip, even in the 8-bit days. Edit: This old EGA demo supports the DAC audio: http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=9240 And I'm guessing some old games do too (don't remember any off-hand). I think it might be under a specific screen aspect ratio. If you are looking through the list of "all" ratios, it might not show up. Although I don't know about what the ZDoom guys have been up to. Yeah! That's it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Covox_Speech_Thing Looks like it's got some pretty decent software/game support too, including a bunch of Sierra stuff, Duke3D, Wolf3D... (not sure about Doom though). I discovered your work now as I discovered a problem/bug with some similar older projects. If you also define the green palettes (for radsuit/pickups) yours will be tons better (old cgadoom/egadoom left them undefined, and so looked random each time).
