DoomHero's idgames findings

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've been going through the archive playing a lot of maps and I thought it would be nice to start a thread of early single wads that are very good i.e. levels from '94 - '96 that catch me as being above the usual crap that came out then.

The first one is library.wad There are a couple of '95isms, but overall this is a cool map.

EDIT: These will all be doom 2

Bf_thud!.wad

Check this one out if you want a really good oldschool megawad. Came out early '95

I played that one all the way through a year or so ago. I remember I think the first two levels were my favorite. There were some other cool levels in there as well though.

[EDIT] Actually, I should mention Christen Klie's style has really influenced me quite a bit. He was good at making interesting puzzles and nicely inter-connected structures. I especially enjoyed his Master Level contributions as those were the first I had played of his maps.

Got another. This one is blside2.wad by Scott Harper. A very challenging map from late '94, possibly the best '94 single wad in the archive.

This thread's title confuses me. I keep logically translating it as "Early maps that DoomHero made."

You may also want to check out Fortress of Death as that one is pretty cool and top-notch for 1995.

This map is sweet. I second your recommendation.

Also, DM2GM1 and DM2GM3A by Eric Reuter who contributed to Memento Mori.

These two maps are also great. I really enjoyed them.

Swastika in DM2GM3A :S

This map is actually really cool. The angled hallway near the revenant/caco cage that the homing projectiles can track you down? ohshittttt

This was an amazing map. I played this map in 94 too.

[edit] Just played 'Fortress of Death" and it was pretty good too.

I remember Oracle was amazing for its day, but that day sure isn't today.

If you guys come across a doom 1 classic feeling map (e3ish) matching the following description please let me know!

For some reason I can't remember if the texturing was gstone, marble or brown1. But I remember it being quite uniform in texture use and having a fair amount of blood-ways in it. That's basically it. It was low detail but it had a peculiar atmosphere and feel to it that I really liked.

Thanks.

Here's an example of what a good first pwad from '95 looks like. Has some hard encounters and a few '95isms, but overall is better than many first maps we get here today, and it uses a pretty rockin' music track.

This is another good map. Lots of questionable texturing but that gives it character IMO. The ascending staircase behind the arachnotron and the subsequent descending elevator? sheeeeeeeeeeeeet
