Doom lan

Recommended Posts

I run weekly lan parties in Anaheim where my garage lan expanded into a warehouse. Last week we did a Q3 urban terror lan with Oswald (the team coordinator for UT). I was wondering if there is enough local interest in doom to do a lan? Me and a few others regularly play a couple hours of doom every 3rd or 4th week but we've only got about 4 guys out of our 10-50 weekly guys that care about doom.
This week we're doing a Q3 1v1 tournament for $100 prize is anyone is interested.

Also: which doom should we run? I've been using CSdoom and was using Legacy but I haven't experimented with Zdaemon or PRBoom on the lan.

My best buddy's organising a LAN party soon. We don't have any prizes, yet the event itself should be cool. We're renting a huge basement somewhere, and there's about 40 people coming. There's going to be an X-Box, a DVD player and two projectors to put stuff up on the walls. Playing splitscreen Halo should be fun. And, of course, the late-night porn sharing.

We set this lan party place up a year ago. We have 1600 sq ft, 75 network ports on HP Procurve switches (fiber linked), hundreds of amps of power, DVD, couches, honor bar with food and sodas and all hardcore long time lanners. This is a club and not just another PC Room...

Well the original is no good for lans: it only supports 4 people, you can't join a game in progress and it's DOS. There are many XP, NT and 2000 gamers now. Besides if I can't mouse look then I get bored pretty quick. It's just too limiting to be totally 2d.

Thanks Fodder! I guess I'm a very impure fellow... But I still play Duke, Doom, Quake1 etc., so I'm probably not all bad.

wow, you're soo oldskool! ;)

heh, seriously though, I'd say use ZDaemon from what little I've seen in practice.

Wish I could see the place, I must get down to our old LAN haunt where CS was teh mainstay, but we always had time for a little Dukematch 'after hours' cos we nobbled the boss! Heh, good luck with it.

Oh, and don't forget those cheap hot dogs and pepsis, essential fuel, ahh, good times!!

Well we have this pizza place with 27" pizzas (as wide as a door) which serves instead of the hot dogs :->
I'll use zdeaman then: I believe that I tried it but I lose track because of all the cool ports that have come out in the past year. It's great to have options!
You can see the place: there are many pictures off of hatlan.com if you click on the Multimedia button: animated GIFS, party photos, a flash movie, a couple mpgs...
Thanks!

You can also use KDX 4.0 for LAN parties since you can host your own internal master server :)
..then it is no problem to play all the other cool ports too...

...problem solved. If you can't play doom with looking up/down then don't play at all.

We get 10-50 guys so I'd like to go with one of the more modern ports. I notice that my CSDoom batch files for the clients and server all load the wad file and that it wouldn't work unless the client loads the wad file. Do any of the ports allow the client to join the game without manually loading the wad file? Or better yet: have a lan browser like quake and join a game without manually loading the wad? Thanks!
Nobody has suggested that they might come: oh well--I'll make due with my own guys.
King Doom: with doom irregulars who don't play it much, it won't matter about multiple ports of doom but to just have one good one to run easily. The last couple times that we doomed at HatLan, we ran some dwango5 and Hatmax wads with play in a few maps each of those. Hatmax is a wad compilation that I made wayyyy back (as well as Fragii and R.wad).

Oh, but you can define some WAD lists to play and host them on a server, with the KD frontend you can access them trough the LAN...also - as far as I remember - some ports have support for downloading missing WAD's...PrBoom...Legacy. Do you currently use also voicechat ? Anyway, the frontend also provides you text chat capabilities if there is need for conversation since not all people are in the same room on a LAN party. The might also have headsets on.

Whatsoever, it was just a suggestion for a "quick and dirty" solution, but with great flexibility :)

Well auto-downloads would be way cool. CSDoom just throws the client into map01 without the wad loaded if he doesn't do a "-file dwango5" on the command line. I'll start fooling with the King's software and PRBOOM and LEGACY: THanks!
We don't need the voice chat in that we're a lan and I scream really well.
Listen:
AAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

See?

Yeah, if you will use it one time, I'm sure you will never ever miss it again :)

Well, it should be said that a LOT of Doomers think that ZDoom has changed the original (DM) play too much. So, if you're used to original Doom deathmatch you are sure going to notice a difference (movement, damage dealt by rockets, pellet spreads, etc). Not to mention that stupid bunny hopping.

I'd say go with PrBoom.

I don't think he is gonna be bothered about original Doom :)

On the subject of bunny hopping...someone said I was bunny hopping the other day in a game, and I KNOW I wasn't jumping, so is it an error?
