For me Doom and deathcore go hand in hand I was wondering if there were any other deathcore fans here on DW. For those who don't know deathcore is a mix of death metal with hardcore or metalcore. There's a huge diversity in deathcore so many bands sound very different (down tempo slamming deathcore vs progressive deathcore vs core heavy deathcore etc)

Some bands I enjoy:
Carnifex
Whitechaple
Chelsea Grin
Suicide Silence
Cuz Seven Ate Nine
I Declare War
Suicidal Massacre
Disfiguring the Goddess
Sumatra
Abby Martin

Examples of deathcore

If you don't listen to any extreme metal it'll probably just sound like shit or noise but so much of it is really technical and awesome once you learn how it works etc I know metal isn't everyones cup of tea but it just goes so well with Doom I'll be surprised if no one else likes deathcore ;o

I know a couple of people like that. I imagine you'd like some bands that lean to either extreme of the spectrum as there's some really deathmetal sounding bands and some really core sounding bands. All of this is assuming you weren't making a joke ;p

I prefer metal music that lacks -core but if I must listen to -core based, it must sound more metal than -core.

How about this or this? I find that most people who prefer deathmetal over deathcore dislike deathcore because of the breakdowns, is that the case for you?

no deathcore sucks, as well metalcore.

Just heavy, doom, prog, sludge, death, black metals for me.

Candlemass, judas priest, alice in chains, iron maiden, Bolt Thrower, mastodon, bloodthorn, etc

Fair enough. Why don't you like it? I'm curious as it can be very similar to the genres you mentioned you like (especially death and black metal)

If I'm going to hear vocals like that through a whole song, the music really has to back it up, and deathcore just..doesn't, for me anyway. I do believe 40oz likes this stuff a lot though.

Ah yup. I like the grimness of the music (crushing breakdowns etc) but I see where you're coming from. Do you like any metal?

Does Abigail Williams count?

Kinda but not really. It's more like blackened metalcore. They're leet though :>

I like alot of stuff. Speed metal, thrash, punk. Anything that's not rap really.

Me too. Bright Eyes, The Honorary Title, Dolly Parton, Thursday, Senses Fail, 1200 Micrograms, Boards of Canada etc. I like every genre of music really, the band just has to be good. There's also awesome rap too. Check this out for grim as fuck rap and this for sweet nerdcore. mc chris is so good.

I do believe Use3d likes to wear his pants backwards and write love poems and watch sex and the city as well as make false assumptions about people he doesn't like.

I say that any genre of "Metal" that ends in core is shit.

Stuff like this confuses me because there is such a huge range of core bands that a statement like that seems like a big generalization. There's bands that are almost black metal, almost doom etc but still deathcore. Many deathcore bands have a minimal core influence.

I know I sound like a fanboy atm but honestly I'm not, these are genuine questions.

Its the vocals and instruments. For example, in say, Bolt Thrower's songs, there is an obvious ammount of alot of instrumental talent, rather than just chugging a guitar.

And need I even mention Hearts Alive by Mastodon : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vs2ZsxPMdL4

extremely good instrumental wise, and the vocals are even good inspite of their yelling.

Deathcore takes the very worst of death metal and repackages it in the form of a standalone genre consisting of un-brutal and unimaginative pig squeals and repetitive, boring riffs. Sometimes being performed by people with silly emo haircuts. I can't help but feel it's someone's attempt to make death metal marketable to the masses, like what metalcore tried to do to extreme metal in general before it.

So no, I don't care for it. But if you like it then listen to it, I don't give a shit. Listen to Korn and Slipknot too if that's your bag.

What assumption? You think his comment about finding deathcore music lacking offensive enough that it becomes an insult when thrown at you? He didn't call you a homo, dude.

Yeah some of it's faggot commercial shit but there is legit good deathcore. Sounds like you've heard a few songs and seen a picture of some scene looking band and denounced the whole genre. You would probably like progressive deathcore which is quite different to the generic deathcore. But you're right, there is a lot of shitty generic deathcore but there's also good shit just like any genre. Comparing it to Korn and Slipknot is just ridiculous though.

I didn't.

I thought all the songs you provided in your OP were crap, too. So it can't be that I'm listening to the wrong stuff.

Oh ok, I guess it's just not for you, that's cool. If you don't like it you don't like it.

I like me some death metal, and I like me some hardcore (the traditional style, not the "tough guy" variety), but deathcore gives me AIDS every time I listen to it. I've been into extreme music for about 12 years, so I got exposed to a much earlier breed of aggressive metal/core. I haven't heard anything that has really impressed me from the genre.

FWIW a lot of generic death and black metal leaves much the same impression on me. As well as grindcore and it's various derivatives (pornogrind, deathgrind, goregrind etc). Napalm Death and Carcass got better when they stopped making the chaotic noise they were known for in their very early days. But I'll shut up and let the thread go back to talking about deathcore.

Nah man, it's interesting. I wanted to discuss music and that's what we're doing.

I'm not a big fan of grind at all either. Occasionally there's a reasonable song I hear but by and large it's just shit to me. Musical spam.

What about it don't you like? There's certain bands that sound overly evil and grim with brutal breakdowns. What do you think about these:

Okay I like screaming. I've gotten to where I can tolerate growling. But burping? Really?

Though I do love hardcore and generally prefer punk to metal.

I like good melodic music, regardless of genre. This is just horrible noise (plus overuse of double bass).

Out of deathcore the only thing I do quite like is this. The rest gets boring after a few listens for me. Not calling this genre bad... just boring.

I'm not especially keen on this kind of music, primarily because I find the vocals to be, well, silly, and I don't find it to be very structurally interesting. However, I am highly partial to somewhat unpleasant noise, so it at least ticks that box. But I'd rather listen to something that isn't built around a song, and uses a less conventional sound pallette (i.e. fewer/no overdriven guitars). These are two examples from two very different genres (breakcore and noise music). There's also plenty of free-jazz that could be similarly categorised as unpleasant noise. I'm interested in whether metal fans appreciate this kind of stuff, because there are obvious similarities.
