Soundblock Posted March 22, 2018 Noooooooooooooooo, not Jim! :'( Though I've looked around for him a few times I've not communicated with him since we worked on Master Levels and Eternal Doom together. Without him there would 100% never have been an Eternal Doom. He was the instigator, backbone, project manager and main motivator - the guy that reined in the more whimsical rest of us on the project. He endlessly updated the resource wads, built the best launcher I'd seen for any Doom project and made hard but correct executive decisions along the way, like deciding to cut down on exceeding ambitions, repairing the wounds of team members that left, setting release dates and just keeping us all jamming as a team. He could be tough, if we asked for it. When I complained that we weren't being critical enough of each others' maps he promptly likened my latest texture/spaceship submissions "melted ice cream". It hurt, but the map got cut and we got a better project out of it. I always found his maps strangely unique in how they employed color and layout. He often chose strong contrasts over overall texture coherency, felt very tall and airy at the time. He had a burning love for mandelbrot images, which I could never quite understand. I've missed him for many years, now I can at least stop feeling like I should be getting in touch. I get the feeling he saw me as a bit of a loud-mouthed brat at the time (one of my rants made an early artist on Eternal Doom quit), but he put up with me because he dug what we were all making together. If there is one piece of data I wish I'd backed up, it was the email exchanges on the Eternal Doom team, pretty much my first steady stream of online communications with another group of individuals, which we all take for granted today. Man I feel older than I've done in ages now. RIP Jim. Respect. Always. 34 Share this post Link to post

DiEnd Posted March 23, 2018 Damn it, I can't even put it into proper words. Rest in peace, man, you will not be forgotten. 0 Share this post Link to post
Reisal Posted March 23, 2018 (edited) How long before somebody makes a mini-tribute to Flynn in the form of a short map set? I know Halderman got it due to all the outstanding work over the years but I'll bet eventually someone will do such a project to remember him by. He did contribute to Boom so that would be of some importance. 4 Share this post Link to post
valkiriforce Posted March 23, 2018 ^ I started such a map in April 2013 titled, "Return To Titan" but I never took it very far. I'd certainly like to do something to honor his memory at some point. 4 Share this post Link to post
DMPhobos Posted March 23, 2018 It's always sad to see another member leave us, specially someone quite influential....A true legend, his work on Boom still has a legacy to this day My condolences to his family, may he rest in peace 0 Share this post Link to post
rfnagel Posted March 23, 2018 (edited) Definitely a sad day indeed :( I knew Jim quite well during our Eternal DOOM days, as well as testing and suggesting features for his Eternal DOOM Shell (EShell) back in the day. An ironic thing, I recently hooked up with Sverre on Facebook, and just yesterday was wondering what Jim was up to after all of these decades. 1 Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted March 23, 2018 RIP and tears, Jim Flynn. 17 minutes ago, Catpho said: Are we going to do a tribute project for him? Like the one we did for Ty? "Fall of Titan" would be a good name for it. 5 Share this post Link to post
Skeletonpatch Posted March 23, 2018 Shit! I've been in this community for so little time that when I actually learn the names of these influential people chances are it's because one of them died... Sleep well, and may you rest peacefully. 1 Share this post Link to post
Big Ol Billy Posted March 23, 2018 57 minutes ago, Gez said: "Fall of Titan" would be a good name for it. What about "Fall of a Titan"? Bonus theme: every map is boom-compatible, uses generalized actions exclusively. 1 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted March 23, 2018 16 minutes ago, Big Ol Billy said: What about "Fall of a Titan"? Too on the nose IMO. Fall of Titan is more subtle and ties in with Flynn's Titan series. 19 minutes ago, Big Ol Billy said: uses generalized actions exclusively. A bit excessive, especially given how teleports and exits do not have generalized counterparts. :p 4 Share this post Link to post

Pegleg Posted March 23, 2018 Rest in peace Jim. The Doom community was a better place for your work. He was one of the masters. From a personal perspective, his Boom example WAD formed the foundation of my knowledge of Boom. 0 Share this post Link to post

Generalized actions must be used, except for those instances where generalized counterparts do not exist (e.g., teleporters, exits). 1 Share this post Link to post

That's a great idea. At least use *some* Boom actions in every map. I think you might need some original actions in places. I'd love to contribute a map, but I can barely connect 2 square rooms with a hallway :( But, yes, it's a great idea, and a great way to honor Jim, by recognizing and enjoying what he gave to us all. Thanks, Jim. 0 Share this post Link to post
