The DWIronman League dies to: 50 Monsters

Recommended Posts

50monstr-ironman-12lv-57.56

Sorry for lateness. I'd recorded the first episode (quitting at the first death exit) and the bonus levels earlier in the month. I think that makes 12 levels. Time of 49:04 for maps 01-10 plus 6:36 and 2:16 makes 57:56 total.

Spoiler

MAP01 EXIT 50/50 0 22/22 2/2 4:30+19 4:30
MAP02 EXIT 47/47 0 33/33 0/0 4:37+26 9:07
MAP03 EXIT 50/50 0 35/35 2/2 4:39+15 13:46
MAP04 EXIT 50/50 0 34/34 3/3 4:52+20 18:38
MAP05 EXIT 50/50 0 39/39 1/1 5:42+32 24:20
MAP06 EXIT 42/42 0 25/25 1/1 4:50+25 29:10
MAP07 EXIT 54/50 0 50/50 1/1 4:28+34 33:38
MAP08 EXIT 50/50 0 10/10 0/0 5:01+21 38:39
MAP09 EXIT 50/50 0 33/33 2/2 4:39+29 43:18
MAP10 EXIT 44/50 6 42/42 0/0 5:46+07 49:04

MAP33 EXIT 68/50 0 0/0 0/0 6:36+03 6:36
MAP35 EXIT 103/103 0 3/4 1/1 2:16+26 2:16

Never played this before. Preparation consisted entirely of lots of pistol starts. For once, no unrecorded continuous practice runs.

Episode 1:

map01: On return to the start for the red key, creep over the line to open the zombie closets without falling down. Then pick off some of them from behind soundblock lines.

map03: The first nasty trap of the wad, going up a lift to a small area surrounded by chaingunners and a revenant in your face, is trivialised when you realise you're not actually trapped in. Spin left, hit button.

map04: There is a glide that will bypass the hellknight lock-in, but it wouldn't line up. No matter, it's easy enough with foreknowledge. Later on, the revenant ambush is neutralised by ducking into the secret door.

map05: The archvile at the top of the lift is trivialised by opening the door from below and shooting up at it.

map08: Ends with a very nasty revenant/chaingunner trap in a cramped space. Do not release them early while fighting the hellknight.

map10: The only map I exited with monsters still alive. Safely defeating all six cyberdemons is troublesome.

Bonus levels:

map33: Can mostly be cleared by hiding in corners and watching things kill each other. Although riskier, I elected to leave the cyberdemon alive so it could clear the monsters on return from outside.

map35: Became easy after I realised it's not a race to press all three buttons before you get overwhelmed by clones. I thought they were released regardless.

Edit: prepared category, as ever.

Congratulations @AD_79, you and your contributors certainly put together a bitchy little megawad. With just over 30 minutes left in April here in the Eastern US, there have been precisely 2 3 people to have even made it into the 20's. to the final third of the mapset (map 21 - 30). Most didn't seem to even make it to the halfway point. I don't think that has happened before. Well done.

Haha yep, looks like we can claim the title of Most Deadly Ironman™ for the time being. With the exception of Unholy Realms (and even then, Krypto made it to MAP30), every month has had at least one survivor. I'm not sure what to think about this.

Well, time is pretty much up. Thanks for playing, everyone! Hope you mostly had fun with it. I'm looking forward to designing and releasing more maps for you all, most likely with a greater emphasis on the "ironman" style of play.

Very worried at the absence of Alfonzo's run so late into the month

Oh, I was done on the 2nd. I just have this dumb theory that holding back will somehow make all the other players perform that extra bit worse. Now that the roster has been manipulated and demoted... it's time to unleash my brilliant run!

Dead on map10 with no bonus maps completed. Not so brilliant. Did most of the hard work in clearing out the opening area but decided to double back into the fray to pick up the immediately available medikit. Some poor dodging ensues (I froze ala rabbits and headlights) and promptly got sat on my ass by a mancubus. For all that, though, map35 was somehow worse: I completely missed the backpack at the start of the map which, as it turns out, is a Serious Sam backpack that maxes out your stock and is absolutely necessary to finish the level. DNF. No demos enclosed for those two bonus maps.

A big welcome to all the newcomers these last few months, by the way. Particularly impressed with @BioRenegat's debut performance. A joy to watch and especially in the knowledge that he was unfamiliar with the setup. I thought he was a gonner in map08 when the rev fireball smacked him down a lift and into the waiting claws of imps. Real heart-in-mouth sort of stuff.

Ok fine I'll post the lame-o blind run I did yesterday. Dead in Map03: bob_50mon.zip

Was going to try to go back and redeem myself with a prepared run, but didn't have the time. Too bad, looks like a fun set. I had only myself to blame this time! Looking forward to Double Impact, one of my all-time faves .
