Simon Riley Posted April 18, 2018 It's been a while since Id Tech 6 has been released, so when do you think Id Tech 5 will be released under a GNU license? And if not, why not? 0 Share this post Link to post
Remilia Scarlet Posted April 18, 2018 I'm not sure, but I definitely hope it'll get released under GPLv3 or something similar. 0 Share this post Link to post

Because Director's Cut, followed by the Reboot, followed by 50 ports to tomorrow's mobile/VR platforms, followed by proprietary retro units like the the SNES Classic. 0 Share this post Link to post
DMPhobos Posted April 18, 2018 I don't think so, ever since zenimax bought id, and carmack left, i don't think that they have the same freedom to release it to the public 0 Share this post Link to post

You assuming they even can. Id Tech 6 started using Wwise, Id Tech 5 is known for using a specific image compression format, and both of them could very will be using other 3rd party libraries. If they are and they are too deeply ingrained to the engine, there's no source code release. Period. 0 Share this post Link to post

Yeah, I see what you mean, while Carmack was still with Id Software, he talked about having to remove 3rd party libraries, like he did when they released Id Tech 4 to the public. 0 Share this post Link to post
Lila Feuer Posted April 18, 2018 Seeing as Carmack is gone it's most likely zilch. Besides it was a terribly designed engine anyway. 1 Share this post Link to post
Simon Riley Posted April 19, 2018 So I guess the only thing to do would be to update the current GPL engines, like It Tech 1-4? 0 Share this post Link to post
Edward850 Posted April 19, 2018 Doom3BFG, which was released, has parts of idTech5. It has all its multi-threading code at the very least. 1 Share this post Link to post
Cacodemon345 Posted April 19, 2018 There is no chance that idtech 5 source code will ever be released to the public. ZeniMax removed external licensing from all of their future engines starting with idtech 5. 0 Share this post Link to post
chungy Posted April 19, 2018 John Carmack was pretty much the only person at the company that cared about the open source releases, and even his conviction wasn't very strong. It would be nice, for certain, but doubtful. 0 Share this post Link to post
