Is there any rules or FAQ for this forum?

Recommended Posts

There used to be. Can't find it now. I'm not sure if it disappeared during the forum change.

Basically don't be a dick. Treat others with respect. Don't ask for or post warez (I.E. ask "Where can I get a full version of Doom for free", or post a link to a .wad that you made that includes all of the original Doom files plus copyrighted music, plus stolen code, and stolen graphics, etc... If people want to play it, they need to have their own copy of Doom). Posting links to warez, abandonware, or emulators, or porn, on the forums is looked down upon. Because Ling doesn't need companies busting his ass because his forum has become a distribution method for illegal materials.

Be respectful, most people will be willing to help you out with any questions you have as long as you are respectful to them. And don't make multiple posts about the same topic. Don't necro posts unless you have something extremely important to add. So if someone posted about a project they were working on 6 years ago, don't necro the post and ask "Is it done yet?".

Don't flame others, don't start fights. It goes back to the original point "Don't be a dick". If you have to ask yourself before posting "Am I being a dick/tool/redundant dick tool?" don't post it.

Welcome to the forums!

See the link at the bottom to "Privacy policy"? That page has a terms of use section also.

As said above, not everything survived the upgrade. There were more detailed etiquette guidelines and explanations of markup features. Now that I think about it, though, they were written before social media as we know it today (!), and also before the wysiwyg editor, so maybe it was decided they weren't needed anymore.

Yeah, I found this from Deadnail that was written in 2001, same year I joined, and it's what I've gone by. But some of it is incredibly dated. Especially clan talk in the doom 3 forum, because nobody talks in the Doom 3 forum anymore. But they're decent words to live by.

Official Rules:
===============
1. Stick to the topic. No clan talk in the Doom 3 forum and no editing questions in the General forum. That's why we have them.
2. No pr0n, warez, romz, or otherwise illegal/objectionable content.
3. No requests for said content. Use email, it's not our business.
4. Specifically, no requests for the full version of Doom. Go to Hell on your own.
5. No flaming. Go to the FYAD forums at somethingawful.com if that's what you're into.

Common Sense Logic:
===================
1. Don't make a new thread just to introduce yourself. You're only asking for trouble.
2. If no one is responding to your post don't post it again. They see it; double posting is a crime punishable by flagellation.
3. Don't volunteer unneccessary information. Your religion is your own business, and that goes for gender and sexual preference as well.
4. Think about your message before you post. If you think it's something better said with email or an IRC session you're probably right.
5. Respect permeates outward. If you want to be treated well then treat others well. In other words, 'Fuck you' is not a good first impression.
6. POSTING IN ALL CAPS MAKES YOU LOOK LIKE A CHILD.
7. PoStINg iN BiZZaRe CaPS MakES YoU LooK LiKE An IDioT.
8 posting without punctuation makes you look lazy
9. Posng withh atrocious spellleng refletks veri porly upon yourslf.
10. P05T1nG 1N L33T 5P34K M@K35 Y0U L00K L1K3 A R3T@RD.
11. If you're going to make a large post have the decency to break it down into paragraphs. If it's one humongous block of text no one will bother reading it.
12. If you double post take the time to delete one of them.
13. Take the time to browse a months worth of thread titles before you start a new one. Otherwise you might get verbally abused for being redundant.

Welcome to the forums mate! This place is fantastic, especially for being so old and active, has an incredible community and very veteran users. If your favorite game is Doom, Doomworld is the holy grail to further expand your experience!

in some contexts it really makes text looks worse

in others it's a valid stylistic choice

almost like free verse poetry

The most common mistake I see newbies do is basically treating the forums like chat channel, such as Discord.

So if they are interested in something, instead of writing a proper message, they create a new thread with a one word title and the content is just something like "Where wads?"

The average age of the users here is relatively high, so call us old fashioned but full sentences with proper English goes a long way here.
