Female Protagonist in the new Doom movie?

I'd admit I'm rather impressed that this thread hasn't turned into a flame war.

The OP was called an idiot for a few posts, then came the SJW/femnazi/gender stuff which normally would trigger people but didn't, then everyone started talking about cock, with Fonze leading the charge with 50 grams of Jamaican cock. Question is, has NiH bitten off more than she can chew?? :-)

This is what DW used to be like, I hope it continues.

PS, oh and a few people did stay on topic, but who reads that shit...

Agreed, and i was high on the skeleton thread at the time :P

Its heartwarming. I hope someone doesnt come in here and post something dumb so this thread wont be helled.

Doomguy should be a skeleton. This way, nobody except a few skeleton experts could tell whether Doomguy was actually a woman.

I have to be honest - turning a movie based on Doom into an SJW propaganda piece would actually be a pretty impressive feat of scriptwriting IMO. That's a lot of testosterone to neutralise :P

But I would say this - losing our shit over a Doom movie having a female lead before we have any real details is probably giving the movie's PR department exactly what they want. The fact that Ghostbusters 2016 was an objectively crap film in and of itself was lost in the shitstorm over the genderflipped cast. Sony and their PR team capitalised on it, and we all got branded as misogynists whether we had legitimate criticisms of the movie or not. We all know the new movie will be shit regardless of who's in it or what it's about, so no harm, no foul. Let's all just laugh at it when it comes out.

BTW Aliens is my all-time favourite film. Still kills me that the subsequent films shat all over it...

Last time I checked, the main character of Doom doesn't kill demons with their genitals.  I mean, that would be hilarious... but that doesn't happen in Doom.

Yeah, it would be both hilarious and horrifying. Better not let those pinky demons get too close!

Spoiler

Now I get the feeling someone, somewhere, will make a Doom porn parody that features a dude slapping CGI demons to death with his junk...

I'd love to know where this thread is heading. Does anyone know? (Not that it isn't perfectly fine as it is).

I am surprised that this thread's got a few popular posts lol.

Anyways, I am hoping that the female lead is something like a female scientist who will help the Doom Slayer by information most of the time, like in Doom 3.

A female main character may result in a Doom movie that is basically Samus Aran fighting demons, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. When considering strong female soldier-type characters in other violent sci-fi movies such as Rita from Edge of Tomorrow or Furiosa from Mad Max Fury Road, it makes me think that perhaps this could work.

Assuming that the movie takes it's cues from DOOM 16, she might not even be military at all. She could be a member of the team tht discovers Doomguy's tomb for all we know.

Actually, I'd be all over that :) Not only could it be an interesting angle, having Doomguy as the deuteraginist, but it could also mean that Doomguy remains silent throughout the film and gets on with doing what he does best, thus not havng to resort to the same horrendous script everyone else is stuck with.

I mean, it's kind of hard to say that Sony 'capitalized' on the shitstorm over Ghostbusters, as the movie simply didn't make enough at the box office for them to justify a sequel. If they tried to capitalize on it, they obviously failed.

As with any movie, sci-fi action/horror movies with female protagonists simply need to stand on their own merits. Good examples would be the Judge Dredd remake (which I believe someone brought up) or more recently, Annihilation. Hell, the latter had an all-female cast entirely in STEM roles. The difference between Dredd or Annihilation versus something like Ghostbusters is that the former two had far more to bring to the table than simply 'zomg these are women taking roles that men previously/traditionally held, isn't that so cool, #girlpower'.

Anyway, if I had to guess I'd say the new movie will be better than the 2005 one. Probably not by a lot, though.

Assuming it isn't speculation and they are indeed arbitrarily turning Doomguy into Doomgirl, they're doing it because of the current genderswap trend in media. They made a genderswap fanfic Ghostbusters movie, and they're giving Dr Who and James Bond the same treatment (despite male/female timelords being established as canon, and despite there being plenty of female Bond equivalents in print at the same time as Fleming that would make their own great franchises).

Brand awareness + fan controversy = (theoretical) $$$. That's it.

I've planned female protagonists for a few of my own Doom books, but I stuck to the source material in the beginning, THEN took creative license with the rest. Didn't just take the original Doom story and do whatever the fuck I wanted.

EDIT: Kinda reminds me of similar issues with arbitrary character changes, where depending what the change was, the same people would react differently. Change White Nick Fury to Minority Nick Fury and someone goes "omg like it even matters who plays him lol"; a white guy gets cast as Iron Fist and that same person is outraged that it wasn't an Asian actor (Iron Fist was white in the comics, dumbass). My point being, artistic integrity has become a joke for the sake of profit and far-left internet politics.

Kinda curious how Blade woulda turned out if they changed him to a cholita.

Congrats on making the worst post in one of the most dogshit threads we've had in a while. Nobody cares about the 'artistic integrity' of mainstream cinematic shlock like the next Doom movie or whatever mindless comic book movies Nick Fury or Iron Fist are in. The degradation of mainstream cinema is just as much down to the fucking drooling morons like you who hand over cash every time companies release the next instalment in their overly self-important shitheap of a 'cinematic universe', which proceed to make infinite money because you will never raise yourselves from the lowest rung of """art""" like comic book adaptations and fan fiction. But nah, it's Capitalism and The Left who are at fault. You are half-way to a correct opinion here - one of these things absolutely is to blame for the commodification of art and entertainment. Try and use your brain to figure out which one of them it is, and then email your answer to ispendhundredsofdollars@cinemastobefedshitdownmygapingmouth.org

EDIT: actually I'm being too harsh on fan fiction - pretty much all of Renaissance-era drama is fanfiction of greek/roman/historic figures and that shit rules.

Your post reads like a Maddox rant from 2003. I dunno if 'worst post' is something he's rightfully earned here.

That is an objectively wrong statement and is of a mindset that is causing no end of controversy in modern media between companies and fans of their media.

The politics of the matter are none of my concern but the simple dismissal of the fact that people care about "breaches" (for lack of a better term) of artistic integrity is one of the most out of touch things you've said and is the mindset of corps that are causing controversies such as this.

Just because you aren't part of that crowd doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I think the nature of the very thread that we're posting in would suggest people 'do' care, to be quite honest. It's not an example that paints it in a very good light, but it is an example nonetheless.

e: Also just genderswapping characters is very lazy. put some effort in and make new franchises starring female/minority protagonists rather than just half-arsing it and putting some people off of equalism.

This is a good point, lazy "genderswapping" normally ends in a dodgy film, take for example alien (and sequels) if they replaced Ripley with a male it would be probably be shit. No one would be happy about it. However roles that are designed for the intended actor gender work fine.

As I've said earlier, the companies are trying to increase sales by appealing to different groups of people:

Take star wars for example, pre force awakens-

  • Predominately a male fanbase
  • Few people of colour
  • Mainly male characters
  • One female lead, who also doubled as eye candy despite being a stronger character than the other 2 rebel losers.

Now watch the recent films and you will see that has changed in order to include not just a male fan base but also to expand the fan base to females etc etc

Few weeks ago I would of blamed politics/sjw/and the rest for "The last jedi" however the problem with the film was that it was fucking boring, not anything else.

You could probably apply that example to many long running film/tv series, the fuss over having a black doctor who (another example) was ridiculous and the people that were complaining probably didn't even watch the new show.
