Worst Ending in a videogame?

Recommended Posts

I haven't played Fallout 3, but I especially like how there's a companion character who's immune to radiation and they refuse to enter the irradiated control room thingy in your place.

It was such a massive plot hole that they fixed it in the broken steel DLC (though the ending slides still call you a coward if you send in one of your rad proof companions)

As others have noted, Fallout 3's original ending is terrible.  Mass Effect 3's is also a bad one, and tonally all wrong for the series up to that point.

Not yet mentioned as far as I can see, but definitely in the running: Dungeon Siege 2.  "Surprise, both you and the supposed big bad are just patsies for the REAL VILLAIN!  Who you can only fight in the DLC, sucker!"

Well, excuse me for taking the logical solution, Bethesda!

I actually did that on my last run of Fallout 3 with Fawkes and he said some spiel about destiny and fate and blah, blah, blah, I don't fuggin' care, but then he went and did it anyway.

Yeah, that ending always annoyed me.

GTA 2. Straight to credits, at least in my copy from steam. Guess they blew the "ending budget" on that intro movie.

Halo 2

I was expecting something better when I played it the first time.

I too was expecting something greater for Halo 2. Minus the last cinematic Halo 3 had a way better ending IMO. They promised so much with Halo 2, so much that they did not deliver.

Any game that you play and love and were promised a sequel but they did not deliver one. :(

For me, that's going to be HL2:EP2 for very obvious reasons. Some of the key characters die and we're never going to see a new game with a real conclusion which answers most of the remaining questions, Marc's Pastebin script is as close as we'll ever get to one.

Makes me wish the series simply stopped at HL2 and the episodic format never became a thing.

Super Mario Brothers 2. It was all just a dream... wtf, talk about a disappointing ending.

Then there's the point n' click fan's go to answer, Monkey Island 2. It was all just wild imagination of a kid on a theme park ride and the evil pirate was a bullying older brother... Or was it? Wait, is voodoo magic just screwing with Guybrush's mind? Talk to me, game!!! Goddammit!

The third game somewhat acknowledges the trippy ending, but quickly plays it off without a trace of explanation, which was a savvy script-writing decision, heh.

I have a worse ending for ya in HL2: EP2...

HL2: EP2 I lugged that gnome around for 9 hours. Having to put it down to fight and hope it didn't slide away. Having to balance it on the car since you can't use the gravity gun while driving. Knowing that every time I drive too fast it would fall off or every time I stop it would launch off potentially at random angles because of physics.

At the end, I stuck it in the rocket. Beat the game / DLC. No achievement... because I forgot to close the door on the rocket. How's that for a worse ending?

Omg 9 hours for an achievement which you didn't even get due to forgetting something so trivial. Yeah that sucks.

I've managed to get that achievement, same for the purple hat in Black Mesa, which in the retail version is terrible because they moved it to Unforeseen Consequences. Know what that means? Remember the hanging crates at some point right before reaching the Office complex? Yeah uh good luck throwing the hat on the other side. Oh, and you can't sprint while you're holding any items, and I did need to sprint there -__- . I think I reloaded a quick save I made there like 30 times or more until I finally succeeded. I hate myself so much, but that's what happens when you're a completionist. If only I had the same patience and sheer willpower for everything else that's much more important in real life I'd be quite far ;_; .

Still, I've never managed to get the Antlion Grubs achievement in EP2. I always miss a couple of grubs somewhere. The most I could ever kill were 314/333 iirc.

I got 332/333 in one run. I never figured out where that last one was.

Maybe the one inside the wardrobe placed right before the entrance to the actual caves. Or at the exit where the green Antlion Guard smashes the wooden barrier right before you drop into the loading screen to Freeman Pontifex.

Pretty sure I got that last one

Then you probably missed the former. Lambda Locator from HL2 was easier :v . Also The One Free Bullet in Episode One. Yeah, these two achievements are bullshit.

Probably so. Amusingly, I never got close to Lambda Locator, but I did manage The One Free Bullet.

How many Lambda things were in HL2? 63?

I think I found 22.

Hm, so half (-1) of them, there's 45 caches.

I donno what y'all are talking about. Once you play through one of the most unforgiving NES platformers, constantly getting knocked out of your armor and into your underwear, THEN have to complete the entire game again but even harder, I think there's no more fitting ending than an insultingly easy final boss and this classic screen:

I mean, this game has been trolling you the whole time, how else could it have ended?

I cheesed this bullshit by using a console trick to turn a small cardboard box next to the rocket into the gnome and sticking it in the rocket.

You have to be asleep to go to subcon. It all really happened.

Hacx has the worst ending. Don't end your game with a To Be Continued, guys...

Quite a lot of stuff here about Halo 2. I don't actually remember much about its ending, but I do recall becoming more and more disillusioned with the way the rubbish 'story' and its complications unfolded during the course of the game, events which I couldn't bring myself to care about, much less to understand.

As far as endings go, the first Half Life takes some beating for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Opposing Force somehow managed to be worse because its end is incredibly ambiguous.
