What are some of the most overrated movies you ever watched?

Recommended Posts

Quantum of Solace is not overrated because I NEVER hear a good word about it. Isn't the topic about movies that are overrated and not just movies you don't like?

The thread asking that question is called "Liking" Posts, it's a little farther down the list in Everything Else.

Best as I can tell, they're all the same.

Im gonna get roasted for this, but fuck it....

The most overrated movie that i've watched and i disliked was Wicker Man (the original one with Christopher lee, not the nick cage one), a friend and i we were looking for good quality horror movies and we said "Hey wicker man it's always mentioned as one of the best horror movies of all time, so let's watch it", after we finished watching the movie we both looked at each and we asked "What the hell was that?"

I've liked the Nick Cage one better. :3

I personally think Star Wars is pretty overrated, the hype never really got to me, I am more of a Star Trek or Lord of the Rings in terms of my Sci-Fi/Fantasy legends.

Same.

In fact, I doubt Star Wars would've ever been so popular if it wasn't for the Force and characters like Vader. You take that out, you're left with nothing.

Generic space opera? Supposedly it was based on swashbuckling and Flash Gordon, but all I see is a medieval movie reskinned for space.

George let out that the episodes 7 - 9 he had imagined were the characters becoming micro to meet some other alien race and how terrible that would have been.

While I'm here... James Bond as a film series has always seemed dull when I've been forced to watch it. I think the only one I "liked" was Casino Royale and on paper to me it looked terrible... blonde Bond shell, hour long segment of playing poker. The others I "like" on paper. Gimmicky villains, action, guns, car chases, helicopter explosions, stupid plots to take over the world... yet watching them, I just don't care. There's a lot of downtime in the movies.

The gimmicky villains help the series and I always felt the series as a whole was the action movies to appeal to women. I know plenty of women that enjoy the franchise, but not that many men beyond "Golden Eye 64 is the best game." I think its the tuxedo that helps appeal to women.

Its like the modern Ocean 11 franchise. It appealed more to women, than men, despite being a genre geared toward men. That is probably why no one cares there's an all female spin off.

I loathe watching 2001. There's just too much concept and too little content, it's excruciating to bear. However I respect the movie, because it achieves what it set out to achieve. The concept really is amazing when you swallow the squeaky clean driness...

Here's an odd comparison. One of the most impactful movies I've ever seen is the Belarusian flick Come and See. It is an amazing movie, an absolute masterclass in cinematography and a deeply touching experience. But I wouldn't recommend watching it unless you're ready for the director abusing you, the audience. The praise heaped on such movies is deserved and just, but that doesn't make them appealing to Joe Crowder.

You're one of the first people I've seen comment on Come and See, and I watched it for the first time almost 13 years ago. I agree, there's no movie that I've seen that comes close to the impact of Come and See the first time you watch it. I still think it's the 'best' movie ever made, not my favorite movie, but for emotional impact I haven't come across anything that tops it.

And I agree on 2001, I love Kubrick, and what he did with that movie is technically amazing and beautiful; but I just can't sit and watch it. Full Metal Jacket, Dr. Strangelove, and The Shining are some of my favorite movies, but sometimes Kubrick could go just a little overboard on the details of his vision.

As far as overrated movies I've recently seen: The Shape of Water. I truly can't understand why it won so many awards. The acting was okay at best, the 'bad guy' was just as 1 dimensional as you could make him. The special effects were lacking. The dialog for the most part was straightforward with no nuance, there were no character arcs, everyone was pretty much the same at the end as they were at the beginning. It really felt like b-movie from the 50s; I could find absolutely nothing to enjoy with it. And it absolutely blew my mind with all the Oscars it won. Maybe a lot of people owed Guillermo del Toro favors, but his movie certainly did me no favors.

District 9 and anything by Neill Blomkamp in general. Watching one of his films feels like watching a bad video game someone else is playing.

This is the first time I see someone saying District 9 is overrated.

Ironic, I'm not seeing many people talking about it either.

I think I can understand where fraggle is coming from. Although Chappy is made by Neill Blomkamp too yeah? I thought that was pretty decent, I can easily watch it again.

Haven't seen Chappie but I saw Elysium. Something about his style makes his films completely unwatchable for me.

I remember watching Elysium. I couldn't take it seriously. I think what broke that film for me was their little modified AK-47's, because that just seemed to be Narm-tastic.

In fact, I remember so little of it that I had to look it up to get the plot. Man gets lethal radiation dose (presumably 5+ Sv effective whole body dose) and will die in days, so he has to use the Med Bay on the Elysium thing to live, because it will just magically cure radiation damage.

Right.

I also remember District 9, which, looking back on it, is another film I can't take seriously, probably because of its rather ridiculous plot.

Never saw Chappie, but I just read its plot on Wikipedia and I'm not inclined to now.

On an unrelated note, I just noticed fraggle's avatar is animated.

A lot of Tarantino movies. Although I’ve really liked a couple.

I don't see it?

It is, I promise. The little plane turns upside down every so often, it just takes a really long time (5+ minutes?).

Either that or I'm crazier than I think I am.

Edit: I'm definitely crazy, but it is animated.

I'm crazy because I just set here staring at it to make sure it is indeed animated.

Citizen Kane. To be fair it was a great advancement for movies, but people saying its the best movie of all time are just talking shit

The Bourne Series is generic and boring as all hell

Manos The Hands Of Faith. I say its overrated as a so bad its good movie. Its not really interesting or ironically funny. Its just shitty and garbage.

I think anyone who says that originally watched the MST:3K version, and then watched the original film later. They're probably just remembering all the jokes from the MST:3K version, so the movie is still enjoyable in a "so bad it's good" way. If you didn't have those jokes running through your brain, then yes, any and all rational human beings would realize that the movie is complete and utter garbage. Even the people who made the movie realized that it was complete shit. I believe they snuck out of the theater during the first screening.

Did you know that the actor who played the amphibian (Doug Jones) is the same person who famously portrayed the beloved McDonald's character Mac Tonight? Well, you do now.

Very interesting comedy.

I think you’re misunderstanding the purpose of this thread.
