Star Wars games

Recommended Posts

With Solo in theaters and mentioning of a Star Wars game in the recent expansions topic, I've had old Star Wars games on my mind quite a lot lately. I greatly miss Lucas Arts and seeing new Star Wars games published like we used to back in the day.

What are your favorites?

Some of mine that immediately come to mind -

Super Star Wars trilogy: The 3 beloved SNES games of the original trilogy. They're beloved for their graphics, faithful MIDI renditions of the original music, and fun gameplay. On the other hand, they're notorious for their incredibly hard difficulty and the bosses who have excessively long health bars. Empire Strikes Back is often listed on "hardest SNES games" lists on the internet, and for good reason; the game can totally kick your ass but they're all pretty difficult. The games aren't impossible to beat but back in the day, they certainly pushed the limit with patience and skill. It took a lot of practice back in the day to master the levels of these games to eventually beat them.

Shadows of the Empire: The closest we ever came to getting a Han Solo based game. Shadows was a big deal back in the 90's and the closest that we ever came to getting something of a spinoff movie back then. There was a novel, comic books, toys, a soundtrack to the novel and this game released on the N64. This game was one of the best on the N64 back in the day, though it's PC port definitely plays better. You play as Dash Rendar, who is a hired gun smuggler similar to Han Solo. Dash has a cool ship similar to the Millennium Falcon, works as a smuggler, packs a mean pistol and always shoots first. This game was a big deal back in the day and immediately wowed players by the first level being the battle of Hoth. This level was so cool that we ended up getting a whole new game made out of it (Rogue Squadron). If there one thing I'd love to point out, it's the IG-88 boss fight. That boss fight stands out in my gaming experience since you are practically hunted down by IG-88 in his lair (and the noises he makes can sound creepy as hell).

Rogue Squadron: If you enjoyed the battle of Hoth level from Shadows, this game served in it's place as a flight simulator. Rogue Squadron was a fun game that became a series where each level you played as Luke in the role of the Rogue Squadron commander. This game did the air combat really well and each mission has a set of objectives you must follow. You get to fly the X-Wing, A-Wing, Y-Wing and there's even a cheat to use the Millennium Falcon and some other vehicles. Each fighter had their own strengths and weaknesses, making them unique to one another. I recall this game having incredibly hard difficulty with some of the latter missions. I never beat it back in the day but it was loads of fun.

Episode 1: The Phantom Menace: This game came out on the PS1 and PC, serving as something of a game adaption to the movie in theaters at the time. This was the first PS1 game I owned and I played the hell out of it back in the day. It's a weird game that tries to make sense of the over-complicated plot of the movie, re-writing several scenes. There's RPG elements and action/adventure style play with a bit of platforming in levels. Most of the levels involve Obi Wan getting separated from Qui Gonn, and you having to make a wild quest to eventually rendezvous with him to end the level. The escort missions with the queen can be truly frustrating and so is much of the combat at times. There's a lot of neat ideas in this game, though they don't translate to great gameplay. The Tattooine level with Qui Gon is really neat since most of it is RPG based and you have to go around doing quests for strangers or you can just murder them all and listen to quotes about a mad butcher roaming the streets. That's another thing funny about this game, the player can interact with people and talk to them and it don't punish you for doing bad things. The Coruscant level is interesting where you play as Panaka and explore the undercity to rescue the queen. This isn't a great game by any means but I always liked it, probably out of nostalgia now.

Knights Of The Old Republic: One of the most beloved Star Wars games ever. KOTOR and it's sequel offered an amazing experience of RPG style set of games in Star Wars. The story takes place before the prequel trilogy and in a completely different Star Wars universe involving the Sith and Jedi. I could write pages about how much I loved KOTOR and have played through it so much over the years. This game added so much cool lore to Star Wars and I'm crossing my fingers that maybe someday we'll get a movie set in this era revolving around the tales of Darth Revan and the worlds visited.

Others worth mentioning that I did not play until many years after they had been released: Dark Forces and it's Jedi Academy sequels and the X Wing series and especially the Tie Fighter sequel, and Rebel Assault (I played the second one and liked this game a lot for it's story).

I've still yet to play Knights of the Old Republic and any of the TIE Fighter games. I did play and replay Rogue Squadron a lot when it came out, and I've always had a soft spot for it. The SNES Star Wars games were all fantastic, but I've only completed Jedi. I'd like to play through all three of them on hard mode at some point.

The SNES games all have their difficult spots. Empire is the popular pick as the hardest, and I would agree for the Cloud City level in the X-Wing. I've never beaten them on Jedi difficulty. I did Empire on Brave once and that took many hours of practice replaying some of the levels. I personally find the original Super Star Wars to be a bit harder than the other two due to having to press up while jumping to do a double jump. If you could just double tap the button like the other games, the Death Star levels that required tricky jumping would've been a bit easier.

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast/Jedi Academy - These games are the only ones that come to mind at the moment. I have only finished JO single player only a couple of times but the deathmatch is very fun to play. I have only played the demo for JA and I do love the character creation. I do want to get the full version someday. I like how you can switch between first person and third person views and how you can customize your gameplay experience based upon your play style. If I had the time and energy I would defiantly cover these games on a YouTube channel.

Obvious mentions: X-Wing/Tie Fighter, Rebel Assault 1 and 2, Jedi Outcast

There was a puzzle game called Pit Droids which I liked.

I disliked Jedi Academy because the rodian character I made was mouthing English with his tentacle. That pretty much turned me off to the whole game.

I really enjoyed the original Dark Forces back in the day. I also played a lot of Dark Forces 2 when it came out.
