I think amongst other things obviously, the sound effects are brilliant, makes for a very satisfying experience and one of the many reasons doom has stood the test of time.

A few reasons why I LOVE DooM, Both playing and modding it:

 

1: An exceptionally helpful forum that almost always answers issues I have when I am editing the game

2: A very active modding community

3: The shotgun is actually effective at a range further than literal point-blank (I'm looking at you DooM 3/4 >:( )

4: Fast paced

5: DooM 1/2 gives you a nice supply of health, ammo and armour throughout the entire game

6: User-friendly (for the most part)

7: Contains some of the most easiest to learn editors ever.

8: If I lose HP I actually have to run away rather than be a little wuss and hold crouch for a few seconds

9: A big variety of ways to tackle a situation (Should I pick off the enemies with the chaingun, run in with rockets flying or nuke them from orbit with a BFG?)

It has a very addictive gameplay which focus on level design to work well. Also, it has 3 of the best weapons to be used in any FPS: Rocket Launcher, Super Shotgun and BFG.

  1. Massive depth: You can study Doom for years, and still learn new things about it. Just check out the size of the Wiki for proof!
  2. Source code. I can change how it works!
  3. Totally moddable. I can make maps, weapons, sprites, music, sounds. Just about anything.
  4. Unlike any other game I know, I can play any way I want, and get results:
  • Cerebral, and tactical
  • Mindless, or in the zone
  • Careful, or ape-shit
