As bad as it can go, the EU is still preferable to any of the alternatives.

I guess it's marginally better than communism or nazism...

In short: no form of government is perfect and each form has disadvantages.

But - to make the government as effective as it can be - everyone needs to get out and vote, and get their friends to vote. Then, have their friends convince their friends and vice-versa.

If you like something - or don't like something: vote for or against it. Vote for the candidate you like best, or better yet, vote for the candidate you like best that is most likely to have a shot at winning. The saying vote for the lesser of two evils has a lot of truth (esp in US where winner takes all).

Thank fucking god. Still it is unsettling how many votes for it were there.

No biggie, in typical euro pinko commie fashion, they'll just bring it up again and again until the "correct" vote passes.

But it will always be the "wrong" vote that passes, like it is now.

Never have I ever been so glad to be wrong.

Oh no it won't, because there will be the necessary "political massage" and "calls to reason" beforehand. Ya know, "First time, vote with your heart. Second time, vote with your head".

That is when you forget how ACTA didn't actually pass. LOL.

Bear in mind that this hasn't actually killed it off, it's sent it back to the negotiating table for changes. (due Sept 10-13th)

And there's a disturbing amount of finger-pointing going on from the elites...blaming Russian botnets and fake news etc. for the wave of activism that won the day.  It's now a standard excuse for anything they don't like (Trump, Brexit etc.), and sadly most folks are falling for it nowadays.

IIRC that was shot down with a huge majority (something like 4:1 or 5:1), this was only just defeated by a whisker.

Congrats to all in the EU. I'm just hoping things settle down here in the US, but I'm not counting on it.

Suffice to say it feels like the world is immensely divided on everything. Especially in the US. Either you like Trump or you loathe him - we live in an era where there is really no middle ground.

I live in the US in what is typically known as a "swing state". This means in some elections the state goes red and in others it has gone blue.  Generally because of that, I pass by people everyday who tend to believe me as an enemy rather than someone with opposing political beliefs. Generally, with the latter, people can work out a compromise which is what makes a democracy great. But with the former, there is no compromise and it's either one way or the other.

And I think social media simply inflames the situation. This mainly comprises of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, MMOs, Comments on news sites, and even Steam among others. I am 30 which is relatively young. When I was born, personal computers were just beginning to become mainstream and arcades were popular and the World Wide Web didn't even exist. Now, anyone can post a video saying whatever they want and it possibly can go viral. In my opinion, much of humanity as well as our education system has failed to adapt to this rapidly growing pace of technology. This is not to say I am outright condemning it or even advocating censoring it, but rather that we must focus on adapting ourselves to such changes and learning how to protect ourselves from potential threats that can arise as a result (e.g: trolling, cyberbullying, hacking).

It has been like this for most of the 20th century in Europe, really. You either were a "Free World"-loving conservative/demochristian etc. or a dangerous communist, and before that you were either fascist/nazist or antifascist/communist/subversive, before that you were either a royalist or a libertarian etc.

This same mentality, but reversed, was applied after the events of May 1968 in many countries in Europe: now it was "hip" and "good" to be socialist/communist/anarchist, and anyone who wasn't was a fascist. Greece, lagging 3 revolutions behind, still has this mentality strongly, especially now with SYRIZA, whose MPs and ministers think nothing of publicly calling anyone not agreeing with them a "fascist".

People will always devolve into factions, and will always fight.

If not with swords, then with coins. If not with missiles, then with pens and paper.

In some form or other, there is always war.

And war. War never changes.

People from outside EU and EEA should at least have a say on this matter, maybe gathering signatures for the European Parliament to take into consideration as a partial vote or something similar, it's antidemocratic and low-key imperialistic that they want to pass these articles that would affect the world beyond their peninsula and something that transcends the boundaries of nations and supraconstitutional law (EU) and falls beyond international law.

Oh well, it's still a bunch of old fucks out of touch with reality trying to control the internet and like before, they would probably fail again.

LOL, it's nothing compared to how the USA have declared that they have jurisdiction over every single person (physical or moral) who has ever touched a dollar, and/or every enterprise that has ever employed one American citizen in any role and/or used software or equipment made in America.
