Video Game missions that make you angry/or ragequit

Recommended Posts

We have all been there before. Sometimes, there would be an ounce of frustration sometimes when we play games we like, but sometimes it can be too much to handle. What were the most frustrating video game levels for you?

Here are mine:

Wolfenstein 3D's E6M1: The definition of pure boredom and repetition, with that stupid early section with the hallway having tons of alcoves, and where if you don't step carefully, Officers will snipe you unfairly. The looping music can drive you into insanity after a while.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein: That fucking stealth forest mission in broad daylight. One wrong move, you fail. After that, the whole game drops in quality around episode 4 or 5, where you have to fight bullshit cheap enemies like the Lopers and the Tesla Gun UberSoldat's. Prepare to be endlessly pissed off at the sheer amount of Elite and Black Guards.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3: Everything feels terrible in the levels, essentially Sega throwing "Fuck you" death traps everywhere. I can't understand why people like the older Sonic games and hate the newer ones for poor quality.

Red Faction: Starts out good in the first and second half, then turns into a ridiculous marathon where the Ultor guards are replaced by the Masako Mercenaries, who deal more damage to you while being able to soak up ton of damage. Prepare to die in one hit by some Merc's carrying the rail driver, and rage if they hit you through the walls. And also, fuck that bomb defusal at the end of the game.

Unreal 2: The Awakening: The penultimate mission has you and a couple other marines fight off a ridiculous number of Skaarj in giant power armor. Even after you beat that and go on the final mission, prepare to be pissed off at the Black Hole monster, dragging you every fucking time.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Three words: Sniper's Last Stand. Prepare to scream out, "Who the fuck keeps shooting at me?" and "Where the fuck are they shooting from?", because of the cheap German snipers. Fuck that bullshit mission.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault Breakthrough: Starves you of health and ammo through most parts. Even on easy, it forces you through health and ammo count. This is the type of difficulty quality I'd expect in a Xatrix game.

Red Alert 1: Any level that takes place in a indoor garage.

Half-Life: Xen. Looks beautiful, but terrible platforming.

Half-Life: Opposing Force: Any parts involving the Race X aliens or the Black Ops. Have mercy if you play on hard.

Half-life 2: The goddamn vehicle sections. I hate how they feel. And the Strider bit outside the Overwatch Nexus during "Follow Freeman"

Half-Life 2: Episode 2: The final boss section in the forest. Looks exciting, but feels like pure rage fuel. The Hunters would dodge the way out of my car ramming, and there are a lot of them.

Daikatana: Episode one. Hope you like so much green and killing robo-frogs and robo-flies, along with weapons that can either kill you or waste ammo. Thanks John!

Unreal Tournament 2004: The goddamn mothership mission. I can't do space combat for shit. There would be many cheap moments where the A.I. would get me with their missiles. Also, the final Tournament battle at Hyperblast 2, where it has expanded to the size of a cathedral. Unless you use the shock rifle in that battle, you are screwed. It almost made me throw a reenactment of the Angry German Kid smashing his keyboard. Doesn't hurt my love for the game though.

GTA Vice City: The Driver. If Gamefaqs has over a thousand articles explaining everything to get past this mission, you know it's going to suck. The fatass driver is an unfair chump who gets ahead of you with no traffic on his side, and has a stupid glitch where you can fall through a bridge and fail the mission.

Those are the most painful experiences for me.

Anything with mandatory stealth or escort missions. Fuck that, especially if it makes you fail if you are discovered in the case of the latter if the game is really stingy.

Yeah, the snipers in that game are unbelievably annoying. I remember the opening segment of D-Day being kind of awful and the very last part of the game where you were running out of the factory as it was blowing up resulted in a high amount of save scumming out of me. The game's difficulty is just all over the place. It's still one of the best realistic first-person shooters ever made, but it has its issues.

The very final segment of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 wasn't particularly fun for me, just because it went on for far too long. It was artificially difficult on account of its overlong length, rather than by its design.

I didn't have too much trouble getting through Dungeon Keeper, but the very last mission took many long hours for me to complete. When played on KeeperFX it's a lot more difficult than it is when it's played on DOSBox, for whatever the reason. You're unable to convert the Avatar the first time you defeat him, and the rival keeper needs to be vanquished in order to win. He has a virtually infinite amount of money, is constantly scavenging you, and he defends his dungeon extremely well. I was able to finally win by creating a massive diversion at the front doorsteps of his dungeon, and then controlling my Avatar and sneaking him down a side passage and destroying the dungeon heart in first-person. It was a massively gratifying victory once I finally achieved it, but it took a huge toll on me.

I don't actually ragequit very often. I'm accustomed to my incredibly terrible luck, so even RNG doesn't upset me that much.

That said, I do ragequit every once in a while, and that's usually because I got hit with a whole lot of bullshit all at once.

The highlight here would be in Fallout 4 when I had to defend a settlement from super mutants. One of them had a missile launcher and one-shotted me pretty much every time, but then the one time I successfully defended them, this random guy attacks me out of nowhere. Kill him (self defense, right?), and next thing I see is "Codsworth hated that." Immediately realized I had apparently murdered this guy, which was ridiculous, I thought, and absolutely lost my shit. Put the game down for a few days pissed off about that.

New Vegas has done this to me, too, with the Legion/NCR hit squads (which you can't handle until you're level 20 and have two companions with you) being thrown at me at level 8 or so, so I'd come out of Vault 11 and die thirty or so times until I squeezed through that one time, then got killed after.

I remember playing one of the Kyrati Fashionweek quests in Far Cry 4, where I had to kill a rare demon-fish (Blood-fish? Forgot what it's called) then skin it.

Sometimes the explosive would blow up when hitting the water, so I had lure the fish near the surface to kill fish easier. But the fish were pretty spread apart from each other and sometimes didn't even notice any piece of bait that I threw in. Not to mention there was the occasional Royal Army patrol that happened to spot me shooting a grenade launcher and throwing pieces of meat in the water.

I probably just suck at games, but it was definitely an annoying experience that I had.

I lost interest in the game after this one. I eventually finished it, but it took a long time after the constant fails here and I had to simply cheat past it.

And now for something a bit older. Super Ghouls and Ghosts, where you get to the penultimate level and it tells you that you need a certain weapon to defeat the final boss. The weapon didn't exist in the first run and there was no way to tell that you needed it. This means you have to start all the way back at level 1. The weapon itself is atrocious and you need to keep it throughout the entire second run through. Oh yeah, the difficulty was bumped up too, like it was a New Game+ or something. It's enough to make you want to take your SNES and put it on a track in front of an oncoming train.

hmm.....Let's go.

Medal of Honor Underground: Level 8-2. That stage was the fucking bane of my existence and I failed so hard many times until I beat it. What can you find there? (for those who haven't played it) It's in the middle of a castle which you'll find zombies with BARs, yes...fucking zombies which you must be careful after you kill them cuz they explode. Armored knights, motorcycles and just the right amount of health that you must use carefully...

Gran Turismo series (all games): S-License (especially when trying to get the gold medal)............................................oh boy where do I even begin. The S-license is a set of driving circuits that you must complete fully in such an allotted time. Some of them are HARD!!!

The superbosses in Final Fantasy: This one is pretty self-explanatory....really....no more words needed here

Some cheap bosses in fighting games: Also self-explanatory. Some SNK franchises and Tekken 5-6 (Fuck you Jinpachi and Azazel) along with other many games leads this thing (especially if you're doing it in the hardest difficulty).

I can't remember some other games that made me angry by doing missions.....I'll post them soon in this thread.

I like these, thank you. I forgot about The Driver in VC as it's been years since I've played it.

Also lmao @ Allied Assault, I just quit that right now for Operation Overlord, it's just luck, it's extremely awkward, even for the time it came out. At least the stealth mission prior wasn't mandatory, but I did have to reload a few times inside the submarine pen because lol no health.

The missions Eye of the Beaver, In Cold Blood, Control Freak, Hard Core, and Carpocalypse Now! in Carmageddon II. Hope you're good at controlling your car, using recoveries to shortcut to places you'd just been, memorizing locations of certain power ups from the races to assist you in missions, and don't get lost as you race against the time. I finished the game on normal and hard difficulties, which affect the time available for missions, so I know from firsthand experience how annoying some of these can be.

Launch the Statue but only on hard for Carmageddon: TDR 2000, you need to know where kangaroo ability is and use it at the last part of the mission to shortcut and save time or you will never beat it, no matter how fast your car is. Make a single mistake and it's over, the timer is just too restrictive on hard for the last part of the mission, had they just given you ten more seconds it would still be hard but doable normally, so I think someone just plain screwed up. Otherwise the missions Big Brother and Armageddon! are annoying to do no matter what, the former actually glitched on me last time I played on hard and completed an objective for me, saving me a lot of time, otherwise I only beat the mission legitimate on normal.

The latter mission is the final one in the game and honestly out of all of them this one is just plain luck if you can knock over your opponent who is in a Suppressor on their side, which is hard to do, and plant a nuclear bomb before driving away so he is one-shotted. Assuming you can isolate him, so the cops don't get in your way, and without blowing yourself up from being too close to him. I needed to use the 'change view' to cycle over and see what my opponent sees in order to keep him to stay put when he's on his side and I plant the bomb, least he just teleports away from it when I drive out of view myself.

Bonus: Levels 4-6 in Turok 2, its thanks to these that I've never beaten the game, so I guess this one is my ultimate pet-peeve.

I generally like gameplay that throws frustrating gotcha traps, throws bullet sponges at me, or just generally punishes me over and over à la old 8- and 16-bit arcade games.  So I don't really rage quit over things like that.  But what I do rage quit over is timing.  For example, if I've stayed alive for an hour or so in Minecraft, then suddenly fall and die, or I die from a mob, you bet I'll rage quit.

ah....btw, the only game that made me kinda of ragequit was Ninja Gaiden 1 on the NES. Why? If you reach the 6th episode, when you die at the stage 6-4 or 6-5 (the two last bosses), you'll be forced to go back ALL the way to stage 6-1.

That's a big middle finger to the players, making you to suffer all the last levels again!!!....

Especially if you're in the nether which can be possible to drop the items on the lava after death if you're nearby of that -_-

E4M1: Nightmare Zone for Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown (Duke 3D for PSX) is a fucking war crime.

You have this actually really decent episode hidden behind this Cerberus style gatekeeper of a level that is made even more insufferable by the PSX hardware.

Any and all combat slows to an actual 1fps crawl constantly whilst tripmines just straight up refuse to render properly until you've already had a mouthful of em and are hidden in some real evil locations (like right on the other side of a timed door)...

...And then you think "so I am getting obliterated by unplayable combat and barely visible insta death traps but at least the map is relatively straightforward..." And then you wonder why the door that's textured like a wall (which is hidden within one of the many, mostly unconnected, underwater sections) isn't opening after you've pressed both nearby switches, you turn to a guide and realise the third switch is in a vent in the middle of buttfuck nowhere, you proceed and then later press a switch that summons 10 enemies at once that crunches the weak PSX hardware to the point where your console sets your house on fire and you die in game and in your soul, then platforming involving interloping suicide drones happens and then you go and cry.

What I'm trying to say is, it's not very good.

You know what's worse? that there are traps everywhere. Even at the exit.

And yes, the fact that there's atrocious framerate makes it even worse...

This isn't as bad as you're imagining it to be. It really helps to stock up on magic before you face Jaquio. He's fairly easy if you use plenty of fire wheel attacks and stick to the ground.

Believe me, I did that before facing him and, for not knowing much of the pattern for the boss in 6-4, I died. Yea...

Yeah, The Driver is just one of those missions that not only is rage-inducing difficult, it flips the bird by having that useless prick die in the bank heist mission, making all of that suffering POINTLESS.

The D-Day part is infuriating, but once you get past the bunkers, it get's better. But loses itself because of the goddamn sniper level. The Trondheim level was a marathon, especially where you have to run to the train under enemy fire, but at least it wasn't throwing any time limits. I've beaten Allied Assault only once, and as of now, I'm replaying it for the nostalgia. I don't know if I can beat it again, especially escaping from the collapsing lair at the end.

Yeah, Sniper's Last Stand is a testament for keeping your sanity together. It's worse because if I remember, you have to escort your buddies to a King Tiger, and if any of them die, you fail. The D-Day opening segment is annoying, but compared to the snipers, it's an amusement park by contrast. I agree with the Fort Schmerzen escaping as it was falling apart, I remember being frusterated as hell back then. I've beaten the game once, and it sure satisfied my younger self.

I'm on the boat with you about Half-Life 2: Episode 2 being dragged out, as while it seems amazing, it got boring as hell for me as I went on. Never honestly saw how people think Episode 2 is one of the best Half-Life games. Thought it was underwhelming.

I'm on the other side of the fence, here, so to speak. I thought base!HL2 was drawn out too much with its little gravity gun/platforming segments that took twenty minutes to get through and the ending with all the striders that tank your rockets.

I really liked Ep2, but the end was just no fun to me. Having to kill the striders while fighting the hunters that are just as tanky was ridiculous, not to mention that there wasn't even a proper final boss, just like there wasn't in HL2 and Ep1.

Classic!Half-Life is best Half-Life.

That little segment at the end of Ep2 was incredibly frustrating for me, especially the first time, and today I'm still perplexed as to how you're expected to get that achievement/trophy/whatever for saving all the structures.

Know what the most frustrating part of Ep2 was, though? Finding and smashing all 333 of those damn grubs. I never got that achievement. The closest I got? 332/333. I couldn't even believe that I'd missed it by fucking one and that I'd have to do it all again. By the time I stopped playing Ep2, I was intimately familiar with the mines.

Yeah, Driver was brutal. The Mercy Missions were tough as nails too.

For frustrating moments, I'd look at Dark Souls and the Dragonslayer archers in Anor Londo, Alma in Ninja Gaiden Black, the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time (and Majora's Mask) and my personal favorite place to rage quit: Onimusha 3 where you have to input a series of passwords from memory while gas is filling up the room. Why that kind of shitty, pace-breaking puzzle is in an action filled game like that is beyond me, but every time I play through that game I get there and die repeatedly until I throw my controller.

Fuck that part.

Agreed. Half-Life 1 saga is the best form of Half-Life for me. Episode 2's final boss fight, I get why one side thinks its awesome, but it irritates the fuck out of me. The terrible car physics doesn't help in the slightest.

I never liked achievements. Nothing more but just a cheap bragging award. Carrying that garden gnome all the way across the game? Fuck that. I just want to enjoy a game without an annoying progress notification, but my OCD commands me.

I ragequit (well in my case it's more of a mild frustration quit) frequently when playing Hexen II. The puzzles get sooo frustrating (the whole egypt part can eat my proverbial dick) and all the weapons feel weak, it's overall a shitshow but i love the game anyway.

I did however go into straight up rage when I had to fight Pestilence in that game, I swear that boss is the worst boss in the whole world and i'm counting Duke Nukem Forever bosses into that equation. Those mosquito locust things can go eat a bowl of dicks. I ended up enabling godmode and backstabbing Pestilence to death to alleviate my rage.

Also trying to get the fucking game to even run on my computer was a display of rage by itself but it doesn't count.

Oh yeah, and speaking of Duke Nukem Forever, that whole game is rage-inducing. Especially the combat. However I usually quit before the combat even happens cuz i'm not in the mood to watch THAT cutscene.

Probably because it's the most fun part of the HL2 games. HL2 had lots of slow and story sections which are going to test the patience of the players who don't care about it, Episode 1 was very short and its final escort mission as well as the Lowlife chapter were very annoying (hell, Lowlife is easily the most frustrating chapter in the entire series, who the hell thought that waiting for an elevator to come while you're being assaulted by waves of zombies in absolute darkness was good gameplay?). The only fun part of Episode 1 was the hospital, and the Citadel Core was amazing to explore, but that's about it.

Compared to the other 2 games, Episode 2 was much, much more action packed, and the ambushes were fun, although it's also possible to unfortunatly break some of them (when you reach that house down a road and the Combine activate the shields to block you in, make sure you let the Hunters break the wooden door in the basement. There's no other way out, so if you kill them before they do that you won't be able o progress any further in the game).

Hm, maybe you just weren't used to them, I think the physics of the muscle car were quite good (no, in no way on par with what you see in other games, but that's not the point), and that car was definitely more stable than the Buggy in HL2 was, you couldn't control that car while the turbo was active. In the original release it was even worse, it only got more stable after the major 2010 engine update, which also made its turbo less effective.

Now then, moving to the actual topic at hand, well it's not one mission, but what I really hated since I finished SS2 was the backtracking, that game relied on it too much. It's no fun that the enemies keep spawning all the time either, that's even more aggravating when you're low on ammo.

Also, Lowlife from HL2: EP1, for obvious reasons. And while it's not part of a story mission or whatever, I despised some of the challenges in the Challenge Tower in MK9, like seriously 3 Shao Kahns or 3 Goros? Unless you're a very good player, there's no way you can beat them without resorting to cheapness.

I Agree with you on the Xen and Interloper chapters from the first Half-Life, they're rage inducing but not enough to make me Ragequit heh, though tbh after couple of replays it became normal for me, maybe I just got used to the awkwardness of these chapters lol, It's a shame because I really like some parts of these levels, like that one part where you have to Free some Sprites to activate a portal or the part where you are forced to Break some Alien Grunt eggs to continue, and the whole "Monster stomach" aesthetic. Gonarch's Lair is not that bad either, though Gonarch's AI gets broken and acts really weird sometimes.

I hope Black Mesa's re-imagining does these chapters justice and fixes all of (if not, most of) It's issues.
