Anyone else feel you should care about politics but you don't?

Recommended Posts

I mean, I see words like Socialism, Capitalism, Liberals, SJW's, and a plethora of words get thrown around all the time and I still don't have a grasp on what any of them mean. Everytime some major political event happens, I couldn't care less as I retreat to my mancave of a bedroom and do whatever shut-in people do. But every time it does happen, I wonder to myself if I'm being ignorant to some problem that will surface in the near of long future, that I'm actively doing nothing to prevent circumstances that will bite me in the ass and it will be all too late.

Maybe it's because I know (Atleast, to myself) that there's nothing one man in a middle class position can really do other than just participate in events, vote for what they believe in, and have it completely shut down and go the other way.

To an extent, I'm kind of the opposite. I'm something of a news addict and I spend a fair bit of time following local, national and international news stories. For the most part, I like to follow what's happening on an international level. There are times when the news stresses me out, and I wish I didn't care about current issues as much as I do.

I hate politics, it's all so muddy and complicated, nothing is ever just one thing and everyone is a villain somehow.

I do my best not to engage actively in it, I'll enjoy/share a good topical joke or two but will otherwise try my hardest to be silent, otherwise I just try to remain neutral and try to understand all sides (which just shows you how much of a mess everything is).

Politics isn't fun anyway, there's always some insufferable jackass that just HAS to be right, just HAS to let you know you're objectively terrible for not being cut from the same cloth, just HAS to force feed you information you literally never cared about and have no stake in, Just HAS to be the only voice in the room... I don't like those people.

No. We all need to fight and yell and scream and argue about pointless bullshit 95% of the time, we also need to use really complicated, needlessly long terminology so we all sound smarter than those assholes we're arguing with and we need to do it all on national TV! Oh yeah, throw in some war and famine and stuff too, just for good measure.

I don't really care about stuff that doesn't anyhow negatively affect me, I do my stuff and if something gets in my way of doing it for terrible reasons, I'll be vocal about them. Pretty simple.

I'm in a similar situation, i don't care about party side of politics, i feel i should but still can't bring myself to care, politicians live in their own separate world from the rest of their country, they argue about pointless shit most of the time and get nowhere, they don't see their fellow countrymen who put them in their place of power as people, but rather as statistics, then potential votes in times of elections. I do however care about the history of politics, ideologies, constitutions, common law, civil law, representative democracy.

To be honest I hate politics.  Can't we just make stuff simple?

It's too late to just make stuff simple. Simple would have been possible to establish like 150 years ago or earlier perhaps, when the whole global situation was much less convuluted. Now we're left with people who are more likely to drive the whole show further down the shitter rather than forfeiting their position of power. That's one of the reasons why we can't have "simple".

Yeah, I hate politics but unfortunately this is how the world works, so whether I like it or not I do have to care about what's going on and in what way it affects me and everyone else.

After the most corrupt party won the elections almost 2 years ago, largely due to the fact that hordes of supporters marched on to vote while everyone else stood idly and did nothing I can see how inaction leads to major problems and eventual disasters. The Overwatch from HL2 had a very fitting line for situations like this: "Inaction is conspiracy."

And where did this lead to? An increase in corruption, changes to laws to benefit certain kinds of individuals or fit their agenda, non-stop leftist (and delusional) propaganda trying desperately to influence the masses, and literally idiots who don't have the slightest clue what their job entails and on what planet they live, many incapable of even speaking our damn language correctly while bringing only shame and hatred to our name by making us fools in the eyes of everyone else. Oh, and they're the ones governing us. Yes, when I said idiots I meant idiots, it was in no way an overstatement, what's this the 1944-1948 period all over again?

@Nine Inch Heels said it very well, loud and clear like a summer night sky:

You don't need to know all there is on a global scale, but if what you want is to take some responsibility then you're better off spending some time watching news, reading articles and whatnot, so you're at least somewhat educated on what's going on in your country.

Bad things happen when good people do nothing.

Yes, yes, and yes again, so fucking right. If you care then take action in whatever way you can, don't just stand there doing nothing only to later pretend you care, or that you don't when it affects you visibly, and for the worse.

"liking" or "disliking" politics is irrelevant, it's simply necessary part of all societies. If you stick your head in the sand, all the people who aren't are going to forge ahead without you, and almost guaranteed will take advantage of you.

That said, one of the great lies in our lifetimes is that you need to be informed to the point of understanding the whole picture, being that guy who reads the newspaper every morning and listens to opinion radio at work, and can recite all your county and state representatives and attorneys general and secretaries of whatever.

I'm the step son of a politician and I hear two of my mom's relatives are mayors of larger cities (not major cities). The political parties are always interesting. My step dad's political party always tells him / forces him to run for bigger and better offices. He's clearly qualified to do anything, no matter what it is... but I'm in an area that never votes for his political party. So no matter what, he will lose. All the reimbursement his party claims they'll do... never happens. So despite running for so many offices, he remains his town's mayor after the old mayor passed away. He never wanted the mayor job as the mayor is at the mercy of the trustees. He was a trustee for a long time.

At about the age of 22 or 23 is when I stopped caring about politics. Perhaps if I were in a different country without the luxury to not care... then I might care more. People say I should care, especially given my family is into politics, but I don't. Even when I don't care, I still vote in every single election, no matter how big or small.

I know lots of Libertarians, Democrats and Republicans. They all care... so I just don't have to. There's no reason why I should care about politics, because that's someone else's job. I vote for who I want to have that job. Perhaps I'm egocentric, but I'm too focused on my own life, my own work, my own career and my own money to really care beyond reading a headline.

People sure care about the President and every election the American people seem to transform "the candidate they don't like" into Satan incarnate. Then that candidate wins... The world never ends. Nothing substantial changes without war in this modern era.

i must admit, i've been trying to stay as far away as possible from news and politics in general. to me, politics are nothing but a more polite form of slavery. instead of enslaving people through violence, you do it by giving stuff to people, but making them "agree" to some contract without them realizing. then it becomes all about playing on the fear of losing something that people think it's essential to their survival.

as for news, it's nothing but tragedy and other horrible stuff that makes me have a horrible outlook in life. sometimes i wish i could buy a sound-cancelling earbud so i can mute any and every unpleasing noise at any time. it also makes me wonder if this bad news overdose is having any influence on the increase in suicide rates.

It is the height of privilege to live in a country where injustice runs rampant, where inequality grinds down the futures of the youth to dust, where the existence of certain peoples is a political statement, where the future of the planet may be in the balance, and to ask yourself "Yeah, but how does any of that affect me?"

I love a good political shitshow.  As a Conservative Libertarian I love to poke fun at Democrats and Republicans for their failures.  The only real thing that pisses me off is when I read or hear about shit where people who've been friends for like 40 years end their friendships all because they find out their friend has Liberal beliefs on FaceBook.  Friends are beyond worth their weight in gold, they're priceless!

No.

I have my own life to deal with.

I don't care about the 550 in D.C. now and I'm unlikely to tomorrow.

Probably the less important thing in my life to be quite honest. Everytime I hear conversation about that subject it just bore the hell out of me.

I honestly try not to get involved in politics. Mostly because if I put my opinion out there my fellow doomers that don't agree with me could turn against me, and I would rather just get along with everyone. I don't care who you voted for, I don't care if you are republican or democrat or independent, I don't care if you have the same opinion as me. I honestly don't care. Now I have a question I must ask, why is it necessary to flame each other for having a different opinion? Can't we just treat each other nice even though we don't agree?

Brazil's politics are a hopeless shithole, so i might as well just watch it all burn. It's fun chatting about politics with people who actually take it seriously and try to defend their point of view as the absolute truth, though

INDIAN POLITICS FUCKING SUCKS!

We shout over rooftops that we are the world’s largest democracy and assume that it is also the best. Well, look again. At the time of voting, people make choices based on their belief and understanding of the leader they choose and that leader, post being elected, represents the people, as their voice. That’s idealistic but not really true. The elected leader doesn't really reflect what the people want or it's mostly about what that leader wants, often for his own reasons.

Look at the fact on the ground. Majority of the Indian people still live in rural India, in poverty and poor living conditions, and with little education or awareness of matters outside their areas of residence. Yet, 98% of the people who would fall in this category are responsible for choosing a government which will legislate over the future of the country.

Nice, a psychopathic corporate shill for one of the most mass-produced low quality guns you can buy.

Re: Discussing politics

There's nothing wrong with talking about politics, but people often seem to forget politics isn't limited to debates of right v left, identity, or trump. There is a lot to talk about, unfortunately too many people have seem to have left their own personality behind in exchange for a purely political one crafted for them. Without standing up fiercely for their political lean, right or left, they have literally nothing going on in their lives, nothing of value except for screaming about their beliefs in a frantic smattering of keyboard strokes. I honestly feel sorry for these people, many of which can be found here, who cannot see the forest for the trees, and have no real life or identity of their own.

nah i care about politics more than ever and lots of people i know resonate with my thoughts on it

which are

let's listen to people who do good social work and have experience being themselves in difficult situations and stop interrupting them to tell them they're being too political for our own comfort

stop internalizing editorials on the political climate from people who are so well-off that they'll never be affected by the bullshit

give money if you can to people who are likely to promote and organize things which help out the under-privileged

try to be left in a way that isn't this insanely inane layered-irony stalin worship misdirection cloud

join a march against arms trade or against bad economic treatment or x y z once in a while

absolutely no onus on you to endlessly debate this stuff on a social network, that's just a shortcut to wanting to die or your brain wanting to die

This is my kind of politics.

I like to mute this video and put on Stone Cold Steve Austin's theme song when I'm feeling sad. Perks me up pretty quick.
