ok i needed to download a patch for a game, see me eidos rant, however the only place i can find the patch is on fileplanet. so here starts my rant. they have it set up so you have to log in to download anything. to make things worse they set it up to make you want to pay them to download. they have only 1 listed 'free' sever that has a 30 minute plus wait on it. This is bullshit!!! i am not going to pay for a patch or to download anything else that is basicly freeware/public domain. the 'pay' server are the same damn thing, maybe a little more bandwith, but still the same. I grow tired of the software monopoly game being played here in the states. As i said before i was only able to find the patch on fileplanet. Does this mean that that gamespy owns the rights to the patch? or that for the time being they are the only ones allowed to have it on their servers?
all the internet seems to be these days is a mess of shit and shity laws. companies can implat spyware and other harmful software on your system, yet you cant really sue or do anything about it. I am sick of all the damn email spam abuse and pop ups on every damn site. even pop up starters fail to get a good many of them. hell you even have to pay for the add killer its self( i think)

I think all this junk is going to lead to a digital revolution,a nd hell i would join such an act.

Anyway, that's commercialism for you. Of all the things in this world, commercialism is the one thing that I absolutely despise the most, and that's just one reason why. I won't go into a long tirade, but I will say this: The world will be a far, far better place without commercials and those hypocrites that try to sell you something, using nonsense words or words out of context (like complete, world-class, turnkey, e-commerce solutions), that you don't want by trying to make some utterly useless, highly inflated priced, mediocre at best product look like something that if you don't buy at least 20 of them, you will die a horrible, agonizing, lonely death.

Frankly, I find it impossible to only be able to find a patch on Fileplanet. As long as you got the exact filename, there's always some kid posting it on their site, then there's that Kazaa...etc. I don't know why GameSpy is the Thread though.

With the browser Opera you can disable pop-ups, java, javascript, and cookies however you like.

I hate that damn spyware. I just uninstalled a shitload that was molesting my cousin's and friend's computers. It would do shit like change the start page of browsers to sites with tons of pop-ups so you'd get a huge mess of revolting shit on your screen as soon as you open a browser. When I went to a Gamespy owned site I saw an installing message in the loading message bar of IE so I quick closed it. Then I used Netscape to get on a forum that wouldn't work in Opera.

Gamespy sucks ass. Their sites are slow and unresponsive as hell, that is when they even load right and don't give you an empty page. Waiting in line to download is some of the most absurd bullshit I've seen.

Moron. Fileplanet provides a FREE service that allows YOU to use THEIR bandwidth to download as much stuff as you can. Bandwidth is NOT cheap. If it was, Doomworld would be running on a server at some colo which I would pay for out of my own pocket and would ask for donations. As it is it would cost over $100 a month for the absolute minimum plan I can find, and that's with an amount of bandwidth which would be absolutely infinitesimal compared to Gamespy.

So next time you curse out Gamespy because their FREE service isn't as good as you hoped it was, uh, don't.

I agree, Bandwidth is not cheap. Well really it's not the Bandwidth you are paying for, rather the amount of data put through that bandwidth.

Fileplanet isn't that bad to be perfectly honest...blame the several hundred or so people who are trying to d/l your file from the free servers :p

However, their Gamespy Arcade software is another story altogether.

Fileplanet wasn't as shitty when they hadn't yet installed the present downloading system, it's like they dumped their bandwidth problem fully on the downloader. But mostly it's there to stuff ads in your face (I guess they can't get people to pay attention to them in a civilized manner.) Good thing I hardly ever download from there nowadays... of course, the way it's set up makes me think twice before downloading anything if something over there ever does catch my eye.

I avoid Fileplanet when downloading stuff because of the queue - I'd rather download stuff from somewhere else without the wait even if it would be at lower speeds. I wouldn't overrate their selection either.

Gamespy arcade is a complete joke. I'm never letting that shit anywhere near my computer after what it did the last time.

I agree but what I hate is that there are some files that only seem to be available on FilePlanet, so you are forced to use FilePlanet because there is nowhere else to get them.

Gamespy just sucks. When I'm attempting to browse Planet C&C with any browser, I often get an empty page and have to try reloading an unresponsive page all over again. I mostly get just little things there's no lines for on fileplanet. The most annoying things are the shitty web pages themselves. Of course I'm even going to attempt downloading the 47MB Doom OGG soundtrack from there using a dial-up connection. I know there's about an hour wait to even start for that.

What does their Gamespy Arcade do? I was thinking of possibly trying it out to see what Command & Conquer stuff is going on there, since Westwood Online seems to be slowly closing down and the only C&C action on Kali is whatever I organize with some friends. I do not like having my computer molested by shitty software.

I got a great idea. It's called things that work right without violating your computer. It's apparently too much to ask for though.
