Framerate problems in GZDoom 3.5.1

Been messing around with GZDoom today.

Any time I play a mod or plain old Doom II, I notice the framerate roughly halved. I get frustrated because I know my PC can handle this and I want to play mods at the best performance.

This has happened in every version of GZDoom used except 2.3.2.

 

For hardware, I have a Corei7 CPU 960 @ 3.20 GHz and an MSi GeForce GTX 970.

Having the same problem like you, totally random lags no matter which wad i played. I decide to switch back to 3.4.1 version where the perfomance is superb. Depends from what i know, gzdoom have some issue with intel cards. Some people said that gzdoom is lagging for them and dev said that if they have intel cards there is nothing what they can do.

Something that has worked for some people: rename the exe. Name it something like totallynotgzdoomiswear.exe. Then see if it improves matter.

 

The explanation for why this magical hoodoo worked for some people is that drivers recognize programs by their exe names, and can have a list of "optimal settings" for a lot of programs. But with the backend changes in how GZDoom renders stuff, these optimal settings are no longer necessarily optimal, and forcing the driver to treat it neutrally can improve performances.

I noticed the same thing. I downloaded 3.5.1 last week for a mod that requires it. The mod itself wasn't running great and so I decided to fire up some favorite wads, and sure enough, they run considerably worse than they do on an older version I never updated from (2.something-or-another). I thought software is supposed to get better with time? I am running a pretty strong modern system and if anything I would assume later versions would be better optimized to take advantage of that hardware. Wishful thinking, I guess.
