I really love DOOM 1 and I can have an absolute blast playing any of the levels from it. That said, DOOM 2 on the other hand... Well, lets just say it took me way longer to get through. The more open maps aren't really my thing.

I like project brutality but 90% of the time I still play Doom without mods (unless running crispy doom and cosmetic stuff like the sprite fixing project and music mods counts).  I still mostly play the actual iwads too because the newer fanmade levels are too hard for me lol

I always compare Doom to Super Mario Bros. It's one of those rare games that got the mechanics so right that I can always pick it up and have a good time playing it no matter how many times I've beaten it in the past.

 

The modding community has given it near-infinite life beyond the vanilla experience.

 

So my answer is simple: Both.
