Bauul Posted October 18, 2018 Since when is "taco" pronounced with a long a? The poll really confused me at first because to me "taco" rhymes with "whack-o" or "quack-o". But I think you mean it pronounced to rhyme with "bark-o" or "lark-o". 1 Share this post Link to post
TakenStew22 Posted October 18, 2018 One of my friends literally mispronounces them as "cackledemon". So the first one seems about right. 0 Share this post Link to post
Urthar Posted October 18, 2018 I'm fairly sure it's pronounced 'ka-ko' 0 Share this post Link to post

We have no sound recordings, and while Latin has continued to be used in some form until modern times, a couple of millennia is a long time for the sounds to evolve. 2) Cacare is very much the verb "to shit", not poop or defecate. Much as futuere is the latin verb "to fuck", not make love, fornicate, copulate or lie with. Thus the well-known expression "Futue te ipsum!". 3) Apparently it is from ancient Greek anyway, but the same comment applies about our uncertainty regarding how they pronounced words. fraggle's poll is a good example of why phonetic symbols are needed in any discussion such as this. Even within British pronunciation, "carko as in taco" is going to cause a lot of confusion. To anyone from northern England, it is a head-scratcher. "If you pronounce castle like 'carstle' you sound like an arsehole" as an archaeologist friend of mine once explained. Scottish and US pronunciations are different again. Taco seems a particularly inappropriate example, since this does have an original Spanish pronunciation that certainly has no 'r' sound of any kind in it. Anyway, there isn't any real need to guess on this topic. Cacodemon isn't a word that was made up for Doom. It predates the game, and it is pronounced: /kækəˈdiːmən/ Problem solved. :P 2 Share this post Link to post

Yeah I usually say "Cack-o" but sometimes I do find myself saying "cock-o." John Romero pronounces it as Cack-o. 1 Share this post Link to post
