Let's create a list of the best Old-School 32-level megawads

Recommended Posts

I always wanted to make this list, just to sort most of the 32-level 'Old-School' megawads that exist, ordering them by year. I would really love your help on this, guys.
I also want to make this list with you just to know what megawads I missed to play, or I forgot to add to the list. The idea is to put the most memorable (Even the ones that didn't recieve "the best wad of x year" by the community) maps out there.

When I say 'Old-School maps' I refer to those WADs which can be played on older limit-removing source-ports (Example: Boom) or the original Doom2.exe aswell. Those maps that remain classics and faithful to the original Doom Experience, so "Doom in Hexen format" made maps or things like that won't be accepted. Also, no TC WADs.
In addition, not less than 32 levels. Good thing to note is that '3-full-episode' Original Doom maps can count too.

Also, mention the year and the author/authors that created it if possible.

I'm going to edit this list frecuently:

1994:
NJ Doom (Nigel Rowand)

NOTE: I lost track of the Doom Community in 2014 and moved to other games, so I don't know anything about post 2014 releases, so that's why I also wanted you to keep updating this list.
Also in the future I would be adding the idgames download links for the maps, just for easy access.

A friend of mine is still playing around with his Amiga. As some of you know there are also Doom source ports available for it with DoomAttack being the "best" one at the moment. Would these WADs actually work with this Source Port on the Amiga (FPS not withstanding)?

Some of the megawads you listed (like WOS) are for Boom or limit removing.

Back to Saturn X is vanilla format, a very good set.  Ancient Aliens is also a great more modern WAD, i'm not sure how it would fare on newer source ports, though, you can run it on PrBoom+ for sure, though.

Wait, aren't 1994 tune up project made for boom-compatible ports?

From the OP "When I say 'Vanilla maps' I refer to those WADs which can be played on older source-ports (Example: Boom)."

Perhaps it could be titled better.  Like "Let's create a list of the best Boom and below 32-level megawads"? Idk...

Boom is not accepted as being vanilla around here.

2016 - Mano Laikas: A Road to Gazmatti (Nicolas Monti)

2018 - Struggle: Antaresian Legacy (antares031)

EDIT: I actually probably wouldn't consider M.L. to be a 'great' megawad in comparison to others on this list. My bad.

AA is Boom-compatible.

The criteria for wads does need to be clarified a bit. Do the listed wads need to be actually vanilla-compatible or can limit-removing be included? Are Boom wads allowed? If so, then that raises the question of whether complevel 11 wads count as Boom or not, because complevel 11 is MBF compatibility.

Also, I noted this little thing in the TeamTNT thread:

On 11/29/2018 at 11:24 AM, Aquila Chrysaetos said:

Actually, ZDoom is older than Boom by six weeks, and ZDoom came to support Boom-compatible maps in December of '98.

Obviously you're not looking for ZDoom wads, even if they're relatively simple compared to today like KZoom and Zort, but it's best to define your terms so we don't get this confusion.

That said, there's always this. With Javascript you can sort the table by engine and by number of levels.

I'm new to the Doom community so i would like to know if someone already made a list with maps/wads that don't have custom weapons and enemies.

I'm asking this because i started to play maps with the ZRift mod https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=60811 which already changes the enemies and weapons... so i think it would break compatibility

thanks :)

It could be useful if you make the megawad names link to their respective downloads.

"Vanilla" has a very set-in-stone definition, so yeah, would probably get more traction if OP titled it differently.

@DJVCardMaster

Welcome to Doomworld!

You may want to edit your OP to do the following:

  • Revise your definition of vanilla Doom since the wording of your OP still conflates vanilla and limit-removing
  • Clarify (in the title) that your looking for 32-level Doom 2 megawads and Doom megawads that replace 3 or 4 full episodes (so 27 or 36 maps)

Additionally, I think it would be useful to identify which of the maps in your list are actually "vanilla" and which are "limit-removing." It would also be useful to identify which were Doom (original or Ultimate) and which were Doom 2 or just how many maps were replaced (27, 32, or 36 would be just as informative).

Both BTSX episodes have less than 32 maps. Also, just to contribute with some only old-school-ish megawads that I liked the most, besides the ones mentioned above:

1997:

STRAIN by The Alpha Dog Alliance. [Vanilla] (do partial conversions count?)

2011:

Wonderful Doom by Wraith. [Vanilla]

2013:

Unholy Realms by Brian Knox. [Limit-Removing]

2014:

Going Down by Mouldy. [Boom]

2016:

Japanese Community Project by various people. [Limit-Removing]

The Journey by hervoheebo [Limit-Removing]

2017:

Moonblood by Deadwing. [Boom]

Will probably add more later.

I like the title change to "Old-school" for the OP.  Also, many have noted that the BTSX episodes aren't quite 32 maps, I believe they are in the 25-27 map range, like 25 with 2 secret maps I believe.  But I still think they deserve to be here.  The feel fully fleshed out and like full on megawads to me, even if they are a few maps short.

Some that really feel to me like they could BE older wads, regardless of when they were actually released. All have at least 3 full DooM I episodes or 32 DooM II maps:

2009: Ultimate Needs More Detail (Fiend)

2011: DooM Core (valkiriforce), Jenesis (Jimmy), and DooM II Unleashed (Various)

2012: Base Ganymede (Khorus)

2016: DooM The Way id Did - Lost Episodes (Various) and No End In Sight (NaturalTvventy, Xaser, and Chris Lutz)

2018: Deathless and Jiffy Bag (both by Jimmy)

2006: Armadosia: The Mad Corridor (arma kero)

2012: A.L.T. ([B0S] Clan)

2013: Hellbound (Zoltán Sófalvi)

2013: Interception (The Interceptors)

2003: The Rebirth (Vader)

I like this vanilla-megawad by Vader. It's pretty easy on continuous but kind of hard on pistol start. Maps aren't too long which is a plus for me.
