SIGIL v1.21 - New Romero megawad [released!]

Recommended Posts

Just out of curiosity I decided to compare the original pics of the clay mold for the Icon of Sin figure against the final figure as shipped:

Looks like we got a shapelier chin and a cutback on the gibs budget.

The more I play the more I still detest the crushers though. They're destined to become an iconic and infamous part of Sigil that people will talk about years from now if the WAD is ever brought up I'm sure, but I still hate them.

You can bypass the first crusher (the BS one) quite reliably, once you figure out what to do.

Spoiler

Just run slightly past the middle of the corridor so shotgunner nests get revealed, and then hug the middle grate opposite the eye. The crusher can't reach you there and you can shoot the eye and run into the shotgunners' nest once the crusher raises back up.

I do agree that the first crusher is a bit too harsh and not introduced in a very clear way. I mean, there's an easy secret with invincibility just before the crusher, but even with it took me a couple of reloads to understand what I'm supposed to do on my first run through the level. And even though you can see it in the ceiling that there's something fishy, and also which crusher is shorter so you know where to stand once it gets moving, it's not exactly very noticeable--I only found those clues once I started actively looking at the room trying to figure out the way to avoid the crusher once I knew it was there.

I've put a little more thought into the CD situation, and I've decided that considering every boxed edition came with a flash flop, there wasn't a need for a DVD containing the same contents.  If the Bucket Head soundtrack had been put on two CDs, that would have been ideal.

I promise I'm not trying to turn this thread into a memehole but I couldn't get this image out of my head reading your post:

Here is an E5M8 speedrun I recorded, nothing super special, done on GZdoom, don't have the demo for it, done on HMP.

Very nice.

On a side note, the first time I tried to get that green sphere, it just ended the level. So frustrating. I guess everyone here has made that experience, didn't we?

I got lucky, but it didn't serve any purpose because all that was left was that former human :P

That too. It must be a reference to something, and I can't figure out what it is.

I don't think I'm going to pre-order physical goodies ever again. I don't even think I can blame LRG at this point. Pre-orders and post service across the globe may take long I guess but I'm starting to feel it once it's physical goodies I'm dealing with. I've always either gone to a rental store or bought a game digitally so I've never had to deal with things like physical pre-orders. It's just not for me.

It most likely is LRG's fault, they probably underestimated the demand for this a lot. It definitely is not the postal service's or their courier firm's fault because LRG has not even shipped your or my box yet. (unless you got an email notification from them already, I didn't)

Preordering in general is stupid, yes, especially where modern day mainstream AAA games are concerned. For this I made an exception because I am interested in all classic Doom related stuff and it was not hard to guess the 2nd hand market price for the box will only rise, so it didn't even really matter whether the content was going to be good and actually "worth 200 euros" good or not.

This whole chaos is LRGs fault. Instead of sending to the overseas locations first, for everybody knows that this takes much longer than sending to continental nortamerican locations, they just throw out the packages without any obvious priority.

And of course they completely underestimated the demand for these boxes. My standard box is on the way, while my beast box still wasn't send out. When i asked their support about all of this, they answered, that they expect to send out all boxes in the next months. MONTHS, not even weeks, months.

If Romero wants to make something like this again, he should consider not cooperate with LRG again, or make sure they are better prepared for a thing like this.

Yes, in general this has been very poorly handled IMO. The LRG customer service rep didn't even say they're sorry about the delays. What I'm a bit worried about if it's truly going to take months is the PayPal dispute window is closing later this month. To me they said that they expect all orders to be completed this week...

First Beast Box has showed up on eBay now by the way. 4 days to go and already at $275, that's over $100 more than the preorder price.

I do hope you and everyone else who hasn't gotten what they ordered will arrive soon. I can imagine how upsetting it is with similar instances I've had in the past.

I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer when I say this but if you do choose to dispute, consider the options before you do. I work in the financial field specifically related to handling credit/debit disputes, fraud and non fraud claims.

Non fraud claims are usually (not always) denied simply because of the willing participation and PP will inform you to talk to your bank (which inevitably, the same outcome will happen, assuming PP doesn't tell you off the bat to dispute with your bank) and they'll tell you to take it up with the merchant.

You will get what was ordered and I can almost bet that by the first two weeks of the dispute filing you'll receive it. When filing any type of dispute you may get a temporary credit but you choose to cancel cause your order came or if it's lost whoever provided the credit will take it back (be careful and do not spend the temporary credit if you have bills coming out it can run your account negative)

Sorry for the long post but in this specific instance, I guarantee and bet anything, Romero and LRG feel like shit about this happening. Just hold out and wait. This isn't always the case when disputing either and if you ever feel the need to dispute with your bank, do it, that's what they're their for too. Depending on A LOT of circumstances, even non fraud claims can be won. :Side note necessarily not related to this: Banks can tell if a claim is actually fraud or not, so be careful how you choose to dispute.

LRG should figure out a way to apologize and make up for this, they should be able to handle large orders and they are not doing a good job, to say the very least.

Agreed, LRG's reputation is extremely poor in this area and there are other small publishers who specialise in this kind of stuff. If his tweets prior about asking them to update customers is anything to go by though John is not unaware as to how horrific an experience this has been. This was my first time using LRG...and it will be my last. Honestly I'm surprised they sent your standard box without the beast box. I've read horror stories of people having to wait months and months for something already released to even ship because LRG insisted on sending their entire order in one lump and one of the items got delayed repeatedly, delaying shipment of everything.

I was originally going for a more hateful tangent about LRG but I have zero experience with physical pre-orders. (I only pre-order for those pre-loads.) But yes, spending 200 bucks to wait 6 months isn't ideal. This is the longest I've waited for a product I ordered and the constant delays felt painful but then I thought whether my arguments wouldn't hold water because I would be waiting the same amount of time for the same price for any collector's edition for any game. So I can't be bitter anymore but I won't be doing it again anymore. It just isn't for me. And I haven't gotten any emails about my initial beast box order either.

Also, that bit about one artist hand-crafting romero's  heads leads me to question whether they have the means to take up orders for limited distribution in the first place, let alone produce them in a reasonable timeframe.

For me a limited collector's box for a 1993 game is definitely worth the price out of sentimental value. There might not be another box like that in the future and Doom has been part of me for my whole life. As a mapper owning that box is a treasure.

This is what got me upset earlier today as well. Sigil has come and gone but the beast boxes will ship god knows when.

As long as I eventually get the box and there will be nothing is wrong with it I won't really be angry either. I just think they should have made more of an effort to at least appear to be truly sorry about all the delays. (LRG I mean, Romero probably is honestly sorry, and at least he has talked about these issues in the public while LRG has been totally silent all the time -- even after "We have also asked them to regularly update people who have purchased the game" this was posted on Romero's website)

I'm not angry at Romero at all. He has been completely transparent about all of this. It's that LRG messing up the orders is what got me angry 6 months later. I just chilled out because I started to think I wouldn't be able to defend my case because it's not all that different from a regular physical pre-order. But all these delays later we're in the summer and we still haven't had the beast boxes is what's driving me crazy.

I'm really broken up on whether or not I should have bought the box. I didn't buy it and there are a lot of issues (obviously) but I just finished Sigil and I really really loved it. Outside of the stupid crusher section everything was tighter than a lot of people led on.

Neither have I, contacted LRG and they were like 'yeah it'll be a couple weeks'.

Neat.

This kind of thing seems pretty standard for high complexity, low volume items. I’m not sure LRG are particularly bad in this space, it’s just par for the course.

still not a good excuse to do shitty work. somehow such companies have absolutely no problems taking money from people. promise to do the work, take the money, fuck your customers. yay, what could possibly go wrong?

Uhm, I doubt that the people at LRG are rubbing their hands with a grin and think: „Hah, what a bunch of idiots, we got so much money from them!!“.

What‘s most likely the case is, that a small business like LRG is just - well - too small to handle this properly. Add communicational problems with the (most likely) chinese supplier and there you have it. Delays.

it doesn't matter from my PoV. if they're too small to properly do what thay were paid for, they shouldn't agree to do it in the first place. somehow "please, send me Beast Box, i will pay you in next year" doesn't work. yet "ok, we took your money, we will send you your box... ahem... in the unknown future!" works. this is not what i call "honest deal".

I studied all the meaninful secrets and completed this on UV with only level start saving. Was exciting experience, needed to adjust playing completely to very careful at some places. Even last level is fine now if you try to kill there everybody instead of just run to the end and accidentally go to episode ending when grabbing godmode. So now I see the point of last level, it's good, not excellent but good and I love how Romero's level design visuals hammers cpu and gpu, but hey i't 2019 anyway with modern Corei i7 / Ryzen 7 PC's anyway so feel free to do that also in the future. Looks like he can design visually impressive levels when limits are removed.

Doomsday is poorly optimized. GZdoom can do almost everything that Doomsday can do and more. And GZdoom runs much much better than Doomsday.
