Teaser pic of "Sonic" movie pretty dang weird

Recommended Posts

Sega's marketing for Sonic was extremely aggressive in the '90s; he was designed to look badass and he's shaking his finger at you during the first game's splash screen (not to mention his petulant foot tapping if you idle in the level). So I get that there's a pressure to maintain his badassery, even if it's for the worse. This brings me back to the subject of the Sonic CD cutscenes. I mean just look at the animation; it's extremely fluid and feels like it belongs in the Sonic universe. It's tonally a very different interpretation than the cheesy, extremely childish cutscenes in later games, particularly the modern ones. While there would still be the issue of what Sonic and pals say and who voices them, I don't think this look is outdated. With the right studio, a 2D animated movie could really stand out, buy Hollywood is too afraid to utilize a style that I suppose it thinks is irrelevant.

That seems really, really reductive: “It’s old so it should go away”. People don’t dislike it because it’s old, they dislike it because it’s creepy/disturbing. A well done Sonic game or movie or whatever would be welcome as far as I’m concerned and the same goes for any character no matter how old they are..

People like it because it's creepy/disturbing.

This is horrible, probably enough to have nightmare from it.

This is basically how to ruin an original character design.

EDIT: Nevermind, he still is

The fact he isn't wearing socks nor proper gloves annoys me way too much. His eyes are also super creepy, Did they have to give him Chucky eyes?!

I thought this was some high effort meme when it first appeared. What on earth are they thinking?! This looks like one of those videos you find on youtube of people porting / recreating games for the sake of it in unreal engine 4.

Spoiler

The worst part is the UE4 Sonic project looks much better. facepalm

Those videos of people taking stuff from games and adding them to UE4 just to gain some easy views, likes and subscriptions were getting tiresome.

Okay

Now it seems like it was done for high quality furry porn...

IT IS THAT LEVEL OF FUCKING WRONG THINGS. STOP DEM FOOLS BEFORE IT TOO LATE!

The new image that surfaced shows Sonic with "fur" that looks like astroturf, and weirdly textured gloves that also appear furry, but really it just looks like his entire body is made of metallic ceramic. This is the kind of goofy surface rendering I associate with the late 90s. I'm kind of perplexed that in the age of PBR, we get renders that look this bad.

honestly given this and the detective pikachu movie I'm really starting to think that fundamentally 2D cartoon characters just don't work very well in a realistic 3D setting, and I really wonder why people keep on trying to shoehorn it into realistic styles. Was just a few days ago everyone was commenting on how horrifying movie Ludicolo was.

This is contingent on whether the initial character design lends itself to 3D rendering. Think about Pixar movies, for instance. Do you think they start with 3D models? No, someone has to draw up some 2D concepts first. So what I think the issue here is,

1) Does the character design lend itself to three dimensions?

2) If yes, what rendering techniques will be the most effective to representing the character?

Characters whose contours are simple and rounded, like Sonic, Mario or Pokemon, look great in 3D when that form is translated pretty exactly. When you get too caught up in shaders, normal maps and sub-surface scattering, you end up with a character that is biologically unrealistic, yet has photoreal surfaces. Modern renders of Mario do feature some of these details, but they're pretty scaled back, and so Mario appears as a highly detailed cartoon character, whereas, in these Sonic teaser images, he appears as a real living entity with cartoon proportions. The latter of those descriptions is very undesirable to most.

That first teaser is impossible to forget anyway. Many people will immediately think "OH GOD HE IS NAKED" because of it. Good job marketing team! Doesn't help how ugly his "quills" look in 3D.

As to regards to Detective Pikachu, I think Pikachu looks very well done. As far as the Sonic movie goes, did anyone really think this was going to go well in any measure?

I hate how it suggests he's got some kind of fucked up skeletomuscular system, yet still has this big dumb lumpy cartoon face. It looks like Ken Penders art, or that old viral image of photorealistic Homer Simpson. I'd honestly prefer if he was an evil monster, because the fact that he's this fucked up looking but still presented as friendly and heroic makes him even creepier.

Am I the only person that feels Ryan Renold's voice sounds like it should be coming from someone else?
