[GZDoom] Unfamiliar

Unfamiliar is halting development for the moment while I focus on other stuff (mainly University work).

 

Episode one has had some tweaks (as chronicled by the "development builds" on my discord) and is fully functioning. As a bonus I'm throwing in old broken episode two and three maps as well. They've remained untouched for what must be around two years now. They're just there for show, really. You can't play through them properly at all.

In the wake of Doom Eternal's release and the ensuring Doomania I've decided to pick this old thing up and get to work on Episode 2 - Frontier of Death. As you can see it's more geared towards horror, or at least whatever passes as horror in classic Doom. This is where playing in GZDoom with dynamic lights enabled is going to become absolutely mandatory to not getting lost in the darkness. Or you could play in some ugly cursed light mode like Legacy and destroy the intended atmosphere like a pillock.

On top of the 9-map Episode I also have longer-term plans to add new sound effects and music (this may be a separate release).

E2M2 and E2M3 are now finished. The first three maps are now open for playtesting on the discord.

E2M4 is done. This one took quite a bit of work and has a fair few changes from the original.

E2M5 and E2M6 finished. The three new maps are now open to playtesting on the discord linked in the OP.

Well the full Episode 2 release is almost here. E2M7-E2M9 have been released for playtesting purposes on the discord. On top of the nine new maps and various tweaks to Episode 1 content, I can say with confidence that Frontier of Death will also come with brightmaps, new sounds, new sprites and lava embers (from Realm667). New music was planned but will instead be saved for Episode 3 to avoid any more delays.

Episode 1's latest update was released in September last year. I'd recommend waiting until the Episode 2 update if you're looking to play it however, since its now pretty outdated.

When I first played this a year ago there were 4 episodes. Now I downloaded this newest version, there's 2 episodes, and the levels are completely different (not that I'm complaining). Sorry if I'm being dense.

I think you're referring to the time I included unfinished Episode 3 maps and a lobby for Co-Op play. Both of those are now irrelevant. It's just the brand new Episode 2 and the refurbished Episode 1.

I've made a small update fixing various minor issues that have been found after the release of Episode II: http://www.mediafire.com/file/xa16th7gjheue7q/UF_EP2_Update1.zip/file

 

Changelog:

-Improved E1M8 boss battle room

-Cleaned up various texture misalignments

-Better balanced ammo placement (less in Ep1, more in late Ep2)

-Fixed E1M4 premature exit switch

-Added coloured fog in nukage/bloodfalls you can walk through

-Removed obtrusive props in various maps

-Improved prop placement in E1M3

-Fixed any remaining doors not adhering to the size/speed rule

-Added measures to prevent entrapment behind large crates in E1M5's storage area

-Improved flow of eastern half of E1M7 and tweaked monster placement

-Added new quit message

I didn't get invested in Episode 1 but this one looks more promising. Good work.

 

I have a question - would it be possible to load such reflective liquids in other wads as a mod?

There's nothing particularly special about the reflective blood, its just the usual reflection settings in Ultimate Doom Builder at work.

You could apply this effect to any map in any .wad.

Work on Episode III has begun, although it'll be a while before you see any new maps because there's quite a lot of work to be done in terms of improving the current two episodes. Plus for the next stage of the mod I want to up the scale of new content so current jobs involve sprites, textures and sounds. Right now here's some enhanced lamps/torches.

E1M1-E1M3 plus E1M9 have been given various tweaks and a general facelift. New sounds for explosions and the Super Shotgun have also been added.
