Alfonzo Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) January, 2019 > Download Hellfire: Dreams > NaZa's unofficial leader board Leaderboard [1] Survived [2:23:45] Bloodite Krypto - Survives not only the episode but a massive test of patience. [3] Survived [2:49:47] Beginner - Prepared, just like a chicken dinner... cooked in Hellfire. Nice. [3] Map06: leodoom85 - 85... because that's probably how much that chaingunner would have hit for in all of two seconds. [3] Map06: Aquila Chrysaetos - Scalped by a sergeant after a bad miss. [2] Map06: Anima Zero - Stranded on the banks of Cesspool; went for broke and a gaggle of imps. [1] Map06: NaZa - NaZa wants the offending Baron christened Le Sewer, but it's the level itself that's the real monster. [1] Map06: antares031 - It's not often that the SSG is the wrong choice of weapon. Chaingunner seizes the moment. [1] Map06: an_mutt - There's a knack to it, mutt. You have to sort of wiggle the teeth of the lion switch. [1] Map06: dt_ - an_hellknight is back for more marine meat! Or it's the other twin, I don't know. [1] Map06: Suitepee - At this rate there will be more blood flowing through Cesspool than sewage. [1] Map05: Vince Vega - Goes down swinging (at thin air) at a sergeant. First demo for 2019. [2] Map03: Alfonzo - I think I've forgotten how to play Doom. You have to take cover when the monsters start shooting, yeah? [1] Map03: tourniquet - A death for cinema if ever I saw one. The leap, the jump-scare, the finish. [1] Map03: Malrionn - A bad start that only got worse when the demons showed up. [1] Map03: Crusader No Regret - Caught shoplifting on his way out by some officious-looking shotgun guys. Heh heh. [1] Map02: Lazorical - Wanted the sergeant's ammo enough to run at him with a chainsaw. [1] Map02: seed - He's a lumberjack and he's not okay. [1] Map02: NoisyVelvet - Velvet doesn't belong in a sewer. [1] Map01: Sparktimus - Doomguy loses his car keys stimpaks. [3] Map01: Pegleg - If the monsters weren't going to get him, the stairs and parkour would have. What is the Doomworld Ironman League? The DWIronman League is a monthly competition in which participants aim to survive for as many levels as possible in the given map set, preferably in one sitting. Click the spoiler tag below for a detailed list of rules. Players of all levels of ability are welcome. It could change the way you play Doom! In January 2019, we're suiting up for another year on the Ironclad merry-go-round. Hooray! It's time to die in Hellfire, -complevel 9 (Boom (strict)). Hellfire: Dreams is quintessential Russian Dooming: a largely unheralded episode for Doom 2 by @Shadowman that was released in 2013. Among the set's most interesting qualities is the way in which it alternates between pseudo-realistic environments and highly concept-driven levels in support its central premise — an exploration of Doomguy's nightmares. This puts it in good company with works by Eternal (End Point was played in October, 2017), who knows a thing or two about throwing players for a loop, but you'll find that even his vagarious tendencies are paled by Hellfire... albeit in a slightly different fashion. Don't get too comfortable and you might survive the odd surprise on this curious journey through urban Hell! Fair warning, also: this WAD features a lot of curious and well-hidden objectives. It is not to everyone's taste. A prudent Ironman might do well to dip his toes in A.L.T. next door, first, to get a bit more acquainted with this type of play and minimize frustration :) Potential Game-stoppers and Bugs None yet documented. prboom-plus -file hfd.wad -complevel 9 -warp -skill 4 -record my_demo Spoiler One attempt on UV only. No pistol-starting. Demos (PrBoom+, GLBoom, Eternity or Chocolate), stream highlights and video recordings are the only accepted proofs. You must link to these runs in the thread. No additional wads may be loaded. No cheats and no features that result in behavior beyond what is possible in the intended source port (e.g. freelook, jumping and crouching in a boom set). This includes dynamic lights and brightmaps. If streaming or recording videos using an advanced source port with compatibility options, you must display these settings on-screen before your run. In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice. If you choose to stream/record your run for video rather than provide a demo and you die before completing a single level, either on MAP01 of a set OR because a single level was selected for the month, you must display the number of monsters killed/remaining in the level before you quit. You do not have to play the secret levels in order to register a complete run. However, a player who finishes the game having completed more secret levels will rank higher than his/her competitors. You cannot load a game having progressed past the save point. You cannot consult Doom Builder during your run to check for map details. If the recording of your official run is interrupted due to technical difficulties, you are not permitted a second attempt. Any surviving recording may be used to register a DNF result. Accidentally restarting a level before a death exit takes you to the tally screen will disqualify your run. You are required to affix one of three numbers to your run informing the League of your degree of familiarity with the map/set played. Note that your evaluation should only take into consideration the content covered in your run (e.g. if you remember only one part of a level in a set you haven't played before but never reach that level, you should list your run as a [1] instead of [2]): This is a blind run. If I have played or watched any of the level/set being played before, I can't remember the details of any one area in a way that would offer an advantage over truly blind players. This is a familiar run. I have played or watched the level/set being played before — even if it's only one area — and can remember enough details to have an advantage over blind players. This is a prepared run. Before declaring my official run I: Played the WAD to some extent after it was announced for this month's challenge, and/or Inspected the WAD's level design in an editor, and/or Watched another ironman run. Alfonzo Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) Happy New Year! Thank you to all of those who participated in 2018, newcomers and stalwarts alike. My commitment has wavered at points but seeing all that enthusiasm always pulls me back. Thanks also to NaZa for picking up the slack and doing some cool write-ups. Please note that category 3 qualification has changed. Now, in addition to the existing criteria, watching runs of the WAD selected results in your run becoming "prepared" regardless of whether those runs/streams are Ironman related or not. Streamers, this means that you may wish to wait until nearer the end of the month for the convenience of audience members who wish to retain Cat 1/2 status, but it's entirely your call. I realize that I wrote painfully long paragraphs explaining why I was going to do explicitly the opposite of this, a couple of months ago, but now I'm going to hold you in suspense with one hand while I crush my own credibility in the other. Have fun! Edited January 2, 2019 by Alfonzo : freudian slip 9 Share this post Link to post
yakfak Posted January 2, 2019 great pick :3 i feel like anyone doing a category one here should bring a compass and ordnance&survey map though 1 Share this post Link to post
Vince Vega Posted January 2, 2019 OK, lemebe first this year. Cat one, lost myself and meaning of life in the first third of MAP05 (in Prison, huh). This WAD really wants Build Engine as codebase. Doom is a way more about abstraction than "reality" at my taste (Doom the Way 3D Realms Di... no, Doom the Way Monolid Did, lol). dwihfd.zip 4 Share this post Link to post
Aquila Chrysaetos Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) 6 hours ago, Alfonzo said: In ZDoom derivative ports, "Doom/Boom(strict)" will suffice. It might be an artifact of me having just woken up, but I looked at this and got confused at first, having not looked at the command line (which explicitly says -complevel 9). It's a minor error, really, but it might be worth fixing for the sake of absolute clarity. My participation in these events might be sporadic at best from here (partly because I feel that a few people are taking it way too seriously for my liking), but I'll be keeping my eyes on it, all the same. 0 Share this post Link to post

I think that's a general ruleset for any WAD - for this one, above the command line it clearly states Boom (strict). 5 minutes ago, Aquila Chrysaetos said: a few people are taking it way too seriously for my liking Oof. :c 0 Share this post Link to post
Lazorical Posted January 2, 2019 Category 1, the blind thing. Died on map 2. 3 kills i think? 5 Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) DEAD: MAP06 (infinitely tall Baron) CATEGORY: 1 DEATH (scale of bullshit): 11/10 "It was only about time I get to be the dangerous enemy again." ~ Baron Le Sewer If you spend half an hour on a map, it's bound to get real if you rush things. This baron was below the ledge so I couldn't see him, but he could hit me very hard. With 40 HP after getting hit by that baron, I decided going down would be good. So I braced myself for the short fall, but I got scratched. I moved a bit to dodge the second scratch as I'd surely die, and I got scratched again and died to infinite tall BARON, out of all things. The map itself wasn't really difficult, but it was elongated way too much. The WAD in itself was one of the least enjoyable I had played. Sure, it's difficult, and looks pretty awesome and realistic, but the gameplay is just meh. 64 wide corridors and hell knights. Teleporting into crossfire of hitscan. I didn't mind the progression itself, it was mostly logical in the first five maps. Six was a bit obtuse but it was alright... I could have survived this map! Ah, could've. I should've, then! dwironman_jan19_naza.zip 5 Share this post Link to post
tourniquet Posted January 2, 2019 (edited) Another year, another try. Maybe this time I'll manage to stick to it a bit longer than just January. Category 1 Died in Map3 hfd-ironman_TNq.zip Edited January 2, 2019 by tourniquet 5 Share this post Link to post
antares031 Posted January 2, 2019 Category 1, died in MAP06. I hate sewage maze. Other than that, it was pretty good. dwironman_anta_hfd.zip 5 Share this post Link to post
Beginner Posted January 2, 2019 I've managed to survive the wad with final time being 2:49:47. This is a category 3 submission. Demo is slow as hell though. 6 Share this post Link to post
SleepyVelvet Posted January 3, 2019 DEAD: Map02 (cat 1; blind) prboom-plus.exe -file .\hfd.wad -complevel 9 -nomusic -skill 4 -record noisy_hfd_ironman.lmp from what little i saw, this is a great ironman pick to throw in the mix, imo: hyper tight on resources and space. I almost died on map01, which was kinda a terrifying level. I also haven't played doom in a month so maybe i'm just in a surprised shock for throwing myself into it after a small break, but yah, this was a good short thrill. 4 Share this post Link to post
Anima Zero Posted January 3, 2019 And map 6 claims another marine. Kinda hard to guess what to do when I have like 34 health, no rad suits for miles, and sewage I have to truck through. My choice brought me into the loving hands of an imp death squad. Interesting mapset I have to say. Still clamoring for the day Hell Revealed 1, 2, or Alien Vendetta get to be on the forefront for a good 'ol ironman hoedown! DWIronman_HellfireDreams_AnimaZero.zip 5 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted January 5, 2019 I'll post here so there's more possible interest - Myself and the other two britbowlers are opening up the doors for a couple more British-born players to join in. As long as you're British by birth (or live in the UK), and can stream once a month, let us know - It'd be great to make this competition more interesting! Let us know ASAP as I need to knock up this year's graphics. :) 3 Share this post Link to post

baja blast rd. Posted January 6, 2019 I hereby sanction the Bloodite Krypto bowl. To participate you must have a screenname of 'Bloodite Krypto' on Doomworld, in which case you are also automatically entered. 4 Share this post Link to post

Dragonfly Posted January 6, 2019 Oh we had one additional rule that I didn't mention here as it happens: 4 Share this post Link to post
Pegleg Posted January 7, 2019 @an_mutt @Dragonfly @Suitepee Do you want to set a deadline for joining Britbowl 2019 (besides January 31, 2019)? John has already said he would have to make the new graphics, which could be done anytime, I guess, but there seems to be some desire to have the graphics finalized by the the time the first standings are posted. I'm not eligible, so I have no dog in the fight, I just don't want anyone who may want to participate caught unaware by some sort of arcane something-or-other (I was really going strong until the end of that sentence and just ran out of something coherent to end with). Personally, I'd like to see a Britbowl with a few more people in it. Not too many, or the winner could end up being, "Congratulations <someone> on the 2019 Britbowl, with your rousing win total of 2!" 2 Share this post Link to post

J I'd prefer end of this week or thereabouts; it'd be best to do so before any of us have done our run for the month. 0 Share this post Link to post
dt_ Posted January 7, 2019 I'd get involved in the britbowl, but I don't know how to stream. Will .lmp files still be ok? 0 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted January 7, 2019 I believe I speak for the group when we say streaming's a huge part of it for us - that said, I'm more than happy to help you get started with streaming. Once you're up and running it's really easy and quite fun, too! If you're open to learning how to stream, let me know. :) 0 Share this post Link to post
dt_ Posted January 7, 2019 Yeah I'm up for that, I've got no camera or mic though, and I play on a pretty old laptop. Might look into twitch, is that the same sort of thing? 0 Share this post Link to post
Alfonzo Posted January 8, 2019 (edited) Hey, man, the start of MAP03 is kind of mean. Category DEAD. dwironman_alfnz_31.zip P.S. my movement in prboom+ is worse than ever. Crooked head turns, bumping and sliding and spilling all over everything like a tin man with vertigo and a stiff neck. Give me that WD40, stat! NaZa Posted January 8, 2019 Hello, I noticed every run before tourniquet is missing from the board for some reason. Did we screw up the comp settings, maybe? 0 Share this post Link to post
Alfonzo Posted January 8, 2019 Nope, I just decided to go bottom to top in an audacious reversal of the status quo and then gave up half way through. Such is the power that I wield. Tomorrow, I may watch the middle remaining run exclusively and then do nothing afterwards. Tremble before me. 4 Share this post Link to post
