What's the new "most demanding wad"? Blade of agony?

Recommended Posts

For the longest time it was frozen time, but surely blade of agony has taken its' place.  But I haven't played much of it, maybe there's one even more demanding? (nuts doesn't count, since it's just a box with monsters designed to cause performance issues)

Different maps tax the hardware in different ways. For nuts, most of the work is spent on actor processing -- the vanilla renderer skips sprites after a certain number have been drawn already, so there's a upper bound to how many sprites will be shown; but there's no upper bound for how many actors will act. With Frozen Time, the issue is the large amount of visible lines, since most of the map is fully open, and there are these ridiculous pseudo-3D bridges that are made of one billion tiny segments. Contrarily to sprites, segs and subsectors that are not hidden by single-sided lines or by being outside the player's field of vision will cause some processing lag even if there's not a single pixel of them that is actually visible. BOA uses portals (equivalent to rendering several screens at once) a lot of models, sometimes with unnecessarily high-res textures, a lot of fancy scripting effects, and several post-processing shaders; so it taxes just about everything that can be taxed.

I don't think Blade of Agony is that demanding. Admittedly some spots are really unoptimized but overall the mod runs mosty very fine, but I hope they change some maps to make them run better.

Doom Slayer Chronicles is one of the most demanding ones imo, most maps make you dip below 60 fps. And suprisignly The Given, a single monsterless map was just a lag fest for me. But perhaps I shouldn't have played it with GZDoom?

Oh, the one with ridiculous amounts of geometry viewable?

Yeah that's what the Given is. Doom Slayer Chronicle's issues are I guess overuse of particles? The maps aren't that complex and high detailed textures shouldn't eat up that much performance, so I suspect that the problem are too many effects and particles and maybe too many dynamic lights which can be problematic if you have shadow maps enabled.
