Apparently, there won't be a new Duke Nukem game or movie.

Recommended Posts

(I'm VERY late on this. This was apparently posted to Screen Rant on January 31, 2019, but apparently I never found out about this.)

Jon St. John has recently confirmed that nothing new featuring Duke (besides his appearance in "Rad Rodgers: Radical Edition") will happen.

For me, this gives me a big sigh of relief, which I have desperately needed for a while. Specifically, the fact that there won't be a movie featuring Duke Nukem is what made me happy.

When I first heard that there could be a "Duke Nukem" movie featuring John Cena, I... well... I'm sure you know by now.

I literally just now found out that the Duke Nukem movie won't be happening. I'm a little bit happier right now. For a while I was frustrated because I did not want to see anyone besides Jon St. John play Duke Nukem, and knowing how loud and obnoxious John Cena is, I was initially pissed when I found out that he might play Duke Nukem.

I think that it should be a long time before anything new in the Duke Nukem franchise gets released. Here are the many factors as to why I believe this.

Because of the assholes who currently own the copyright for Duke Nukem, the large amount of people who get offended over anything and everything these days (women being portrayed like that in modern times will probably result in the game getting cancelled), the reception of the latest Duke Nukem game, and the difference in modern FPS games compared to the FPS games in the 90's.

It's just not a good idea for a new Duke Nukem game...

For now.

I don't like John Cena's wrestling gimmick, but other than that I think he's ok. But I do have doubts a good Duke Nukem movie could be made. It could be my lack of imagination, but I don't see how they could approach it.

As for a Duke Nukem game, I am happy with the prospects of Ion Maiden, so I am good there too. I just miss being able to go into vents and ambush people in multiplayer FPS games.

How exactly is John Cena loud and obnoxious?

You know how Duke Nukem has that deep voice that everybody loves? If John Cena voiced Duke Nukem, it'd be the exact opposite. It'll probably sound like Sgt_Mark_IV's voice acting for Brutal Doom. Nothing but agonizing screaming and yelling.

I honestly wish I could complain about Brutal Doom a lot more on Doomworld, but... something tells me I shouldn't. I have things I want to say about Brutal Doom, but this is not the time nor the place to do so.

That's purely conjecture. For all we know, Cena might be capable of doing an incredible Duke Nukem impression. He didn't scream much in Bumblebee (don't think he did at all, actually), and demonstrated pretty good comedic timing and line delivery.

Is that so? The movie got actually canned and there's no more Duke stuff in sight?

Not surprising to be quite honest, not in the case of games anyway, after how poorly Gearbox handled 20th Anniversary World Tour... it's probably better this way, rather than another half-assed remaster or entirely new project.

Eh, there's Ion Maiden to look forward to.

John Cena is too funny even for Duke Nukem. What if Cena will play Duke Nukem in WWE and will "shoot" all opponents? You know WWE can make anything.

Not in the PG era, no.

If we ascribe the fate of the franchise to that of Duke, then he is that 90s actor that used to be really cool and everyone loved and promised his next movie would be the best thing of all time. He keeps delaying citing perfection but he really just uses the budget to buy whores and crack. After all the debauchery, he loses his acting skills and his ultra-hyped movie is rancid diarrhea, citing jokes and references that used to be funny 10 years ago. He loses his fortune, becomes a crack addict, jacks off to anime and furry porn and won't shut up about the good old days. To pay the bills, he sometimes goes to talk shows making outdated and awkward jokes that nobody laughs at. I can't think of a more fitting fate for Duke, in a weird way, the franchise ended as it was supposed to.

The Rock should have been cast as Duke. Then you end up either destroying cross-over potential or amplifying it by going full on multiverse. Actually they should probably just stop trying to make video game movies when the playable character will always be a one dimensional avatar for the player to possess and not a compelling character.

I can see Duke Nukem being rebooted in a similar fashion to Shadow Warrior. For instance, you could easily adapt John Carpenter's They Live into a video game with Duke Nukem as the protagonist, but instead of portraying him as just some generic misogynistic action hero who steals jokes and catchphrases, have him be some sort of reluctant protagonist, e.g. a down-on-his-luck porn star or an aging action movie star on the decline who finds himself fighting an alien conspiracy or something.

That said, with macho dipshits like Donald Trump endangering the world with their antics, I say the last thing we need right now is another piece of media that glorifies this sort of narcissistic douchebag. Heck, one thing I really wish the Bombshell franchise could do is to pit the titular heroine against Duke Nukem himself. Like, following the end of Duke Nukem Forever, he would have become a totalitarian dictator who turned the Earth into a satirical dystopian nightmare and it would be up to Bombshell to stop him.

More seriously speaking, Ion Maiden is the new Duke.

I doubt Duke fans would accept a female action hero.

I'm a Duke Nukem fan, and my favorite action hero is Ellen Ripley. I also acknowledge that Duke Nukem should stay in the 90s, and is otherwise an anachronism.

Duke Nukem died when Gearbox swiped the property, and was buried when Jon St John drank all of the Kool Aid ever mixed and started vomiting it all over social networking.

I dunno, I feel there's still room for Duke Nukem in the current era, considering that most of the things that Duke Nukem is referencing are still fairly popular. He still serves his role as a parody of 80's action heroes just fine.

We get it, Duke Nukem is evil, all Duke fans are evil and it's a piece of garbage that should be left in the past. You're free to hold that opinion but seriously, you're like a fly to shit when it comes to Duke Nukem related threads. It's kind of impressive actually.

I don't really pay attention to John Cena so i can't say anything good nor bad about him and i guess i could care less if a movie happened (since it would probably suck ass anyways) but i would love a new Duke game. Maybe in the style of how Duke 3D is (wouldn't we all love that). I mean, Sonic Mania turned out to be pretty good so maybe Gearbox could do something "retro" like that, even if they need help from someone else. They technically sort-of did with the new episode in the World Tour release of 3D anyways (although that version of 3D definitely has it's issues).

But if they don't, Ion Maiden may actually be the closest thing that us fans ever get to a new Duke game (and i am looking forward to Ion Maiden). But if a new Duke game WERE to happen, i'd like it to be in the style of how Duke 3D was done. Not a modern game as i don't really see that working tbh.

Unfortunately i don't really see this happening anytime soon due to what other's have stated: that it's not the 90's anymore and things are way more politically correct now. But i do think that Jon St. John can still do Duke's voice. Hell, if anything LGR (Lazy Game Review's, i think his name is Clint) can do Duke's voice extremely well. I'd hire him in a second if Jon St. John couldn't do it for some reason.

I was looking forward to this movie :-(

Btw, I never understood how people could see Duke Nukem 3D as a misogynistic game. All the "wrong" stuff always sounded as irony to me. A big parody of stereotypical action movies, but without shoving anything down our throats. It's a great game.

Duke Nukem is a player vehicle just like Doomguy. He's just got different window dressing: Doomguy is a grizzled silent marine for a sci-fi setting, Duke Nukem is a cocky action hero for an action movie styled setting. Giving him character would be like making Doomguy a complex figure waxing lyrical about the nature of his war on demons as he shotguns them to death. It'd be insulting to him, the player, and the franchise at large.

Opinion: better Duke Nukem stay dead than receive the Wolfenstein II treatment.

Ion Maiden is literally made by programmers/mappers/artists from the Duke Nukem community.

Exactly this. Add to the mix that action films nowadays are less Schwarzenegger and more, shall we say, John Wick-esque.

Flying Wild Hog proved such games can be modernized if you know what to take from them and bring some cool ideas in the process, just look at what they did with Shadow Warrior. Maybe they could've handled new Duke games too, as Gearbox proved repeatedly they don't really know how to pull that off.

You'd hope that the rights to the Duke franchise were on that thumbdrive of porn Randy lost.

Whatever at this point, Gearbox won't do shit with the licence and are guarding it like zealots, R.I.P never forget, at least they won't make even more of a mess.

Duke has been dead for a long time. He had only maybe two PC games worth playing. (3D & Manhattan Project)

First two where sidescrollers with field of vision & hit box problems that got in the way. They were okayish.

Duke Nukem Forever was also ok, I did enjoy it for three playthroughs but it doesn't have that replay value as 3D & Manhattan.

Let's move on & focus on Ion Maiden, so that we can get sequels for it & possibly other stuff.

Some franchises deserve to die.
