Another mod idea (double meaning)

Recommended Posts

The wads that I've been playing the most recently are Memento Mori I/II - there is a reason why these are some of the classics in the wad department :-)
And today was another day of playing both wads (I like to warp to certain maps and play them because of the music or particular gameplay in these maps) and a thought suddenly popped up in my mind:
Both Memento Moris redone for Doom 3!

I'm not talking about a complete down-to-the-last-detail rehash, the new MM maps should take every possible advantage given by the Doom 3 engine's capabilitiese and make the levels fitting.

Thoughts?

Kinda hard because both engines are so worlds apart - would you be able to recognize a Memento Mori map that was originally made in the abstract style of the old Doom, when it´s translated into the detailed and realistic style of Doom3? Wouldn´t it feel like a completely new map?

I think that may be part of the fun. You rebuild the old with the new just to see if it turns out any good. Like when you play a N64 version of some old game from back in the day, it's fun to relate things between the old and new.

Not all the MM maps were abstract - my MM1 fav map for instance was a mansion which to me looked quite a lot like a mansion and there are other maps where you can see what things are intended to be (You see chairs, tables and in another map you get to check out a toilet). Many of the MM maps look more believable than any of the original Doom1 maps (which in turn looked far more believable than Doom 2's) and we have already talked about redoing the original Doom maps in Doom 3.

It will look worlds apart sure, but that's the whole idea - to see how it'll end up in the Doom 3 engine.

Personally, I think it'd be great to see how that mansion map (map10 in MM1) would be like if transferred to Doom 3. It would be great if we could get some (if not all) of the folks who did the original two MMs to work on these mods, since they above everyone else know what the maps in the two MMs were supposed to be.

I think this would be a great idea. It'd be like breathing some new life into a map.

But still it should only be the original layout of the maps with some detailing on the corridors and stuff, but not too much else.

I wonder if id will have a Doom-->Doom 3 convertor in the editor?

Why stop with the Memento Moris'? Hell, I'd love to see Vengeance or Invasion done Doom3 style!

In other news, the PornDoom3 project is still scheduled for a mid/late 2003 release. Plans are being drawn up and a website is in progress. Expect to hear more soon !

I would love to hear the music done with real instruments.

And besides, who says that you can't do abstract/surreal stuff with Doom3?

Some of the levels might have something reworked, however. Just think of MM1 map23.

Dunno if it's done with real instruments but you can get the MM2 tracks in MP3 format here
Unfortunately, I haven't been lucky enough to snoop up the MM1 music tracks (damn! They were the best ones dammit!).

Some of the tracks (Dreadnaught, Junkie Smack) sounds really cool in the mp3 versions but others (like Nothing so Cruel) are frankly ruined.

I don't think they are all done with real instruments but some of them might be.

I don't like half of the MM2 tracks anyway - the tracks for the first one is so much better imho.
