Id Software was originally going to make a game based on the movie Alien, but ended up basing the game on the movie The Color of Money.

Doom get's re-released every year on the day of it's original release since 1993 in the form of canonized wads officially sanctioned by John Romero and

John Carmack.

Doom is based on an inside joke of id Software about the rivalry between Shawn Green and Adrian Carmack (John Carmack's older brother), that's why Doomguy's arms are drawn based on Shawn's arms as well as the status bar face is loosely based on Shawn's face. The demons aside from the Mastermind were drawn by Adrian, the reason Doom is easy it's because the team liked Shawn better than Adrian, Romero on the other hand thought it was unfair so he added NIGHTMARE! in version 1.2 as a compensation.

Playing Doom on April's Fools switches the attacks of monsters around for fun. Cyberdemons now shoot 3 successive pistol shots which may or may not hit the target while zombiemen now have rocket launchers.

I'll never forget finding this neat little secret. It was 1992, I was just sitting there on my couch playing DOOM on my OG Xbox, celebrating the fact that there were only 19 days left until 4/20, even though I don't even smoke meth. I only shoot it up. All of the sudden the Cyberdemon in e1m2 started shooting Mancubus fireballs at me. I thought it was just a weird glitch, it wasn't until years later I found out it was actually added as an easter egg by Adrian Romero. Man, id used to be so cool! It sucks that they're only good for selling Shark Cards now.

DOOM is not real it's just your imagination

DOOM must be spelled in all caps, as explained in the song "ALL CAPS" written by DOOM.

Doom was made with DOS/4GW because Doom is only for G's.

Later, it became short for "For Gates, William" during the brief period where Microsoft attempted to buy id, but the deal falling through resulted in them abandoning DOS/4GW as a middle finger to Microsoft for their next game, Quake.

Romero, naturally, was elated, as DJGPP stood for "Dick Juice from Gates' Pathetic Penis."

the suit was settled for an undisclosed amount of money

Tom Hall wanted to add steamy hot sex scenes in Doom to drive up sales by targeting the porn game market, all of ID declined this idea imediately because it was "really f'ing dumb, man, what?", causing Tom Hall to leave ID, he'd eventually realise his dreams of Cyberdemon puss by releasing Mass Effect.

Now that you mention it, most of the levels in episode 2 sound like Dream Theater song titles

This is false. This was a rumor made by the head of the dev team working on the 3DO port of DOOM. The way it went was the Randy was wanting to add sex scenes in the FMV sections of DOOM. There would have been two scenes. For the bad ending, the DOOM Guy would bang the Cyberdemon. In the good ending, however, it would have been the love interest. This was rejected because the only developer working on the game didn't only have the time, but she didn't want to put in the work of drawing the scenes in great detail. This was the main reasons why it was a shitty game in the end, as I quote from Randy, "Either add the Cyberdemon bussy or the game goes full anal".

The guys at Id came up with the idea of making Doom, after they got involved in a bar brawl in which Tom Cruise broke a pool cue on John Romero's head.

Did you know that the Icon of Sin rivals Godzilla in terms of strength? This is because a scrapped draft of the Doom movie, where the Icon of Sin was supposed to be a kaiju, actually states this.

Toho then got salty over this and demanded IDW to make a comic series titled "Godzilla in Hell" where Godzilla literally goes to hell and eventually beats Satan. Literally.

Sorry, must've been tricked, as China's chairman, Xi Jinping, always said, "don't believe in everything you see on the net, specially the Doomworld forums".

imp song in doom's episode one mission 2 was based off tool's debut album single opiate headman Maynard James Keenan of tool hated the doom rendition because of the time signature choosen to quote the drummer of tool Danny Carey in an interview from home invasion magazine"they didn't have a drummer behind helping with the track it was just essentially one guy so the creative process was totally different and makes for a terrible copy"

I saw John Romero at a gun store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Lugers in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the guns and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical interference,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each gun and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Final DOOM was based off of his annoying ass attitude due to the amount of chain-gunners and archviles.

In the original Doom 2 prototype. Doomguy would be able to travel in an open world and play a game of Black Jack with surviving marines. The character would have to level up their "game" skill for the final boss against American McGee, where doomguy would have to play a game of chess to win. The entire team decided against this and American McGee was fired. McGee would carry this hatred when adding black jack in Fallout New Vegas.

-Despite the common story, John (who prefers his name pronounced as "Juan") Romero did not build E4M2 in six hours. He stated that this was a mistranslation and it had actually taken six years, predating even Commander Keen. This explains why it is the best map in The Ultimate Doom.

-Speaking of Commander Keen, it was actually planned to have every character in the game hung. The idea was for map 32 to be a full-game recreation of all the Keen games with the player brutally murdering everyone in them.

-The 1992 Pantera album, Vulgar Display of Power, has a cover depicting a man being punched in the face. iD (identification software) saw this and decided that using a knife as a melee weapon was a total pussy move, changing Doomguy's weapon to his fists. (Also, there are unreleased versions of the cover with the man being gibbed due to the man punching having berserk.)

The story goes that Don Punchatz had taken a picture of Romero posing shirtless for a reference to use on the box art. In reality, it was Sandy who posed, but Romero took the credit due to the fact that Peterson misspells his name as Petersen.

-You can jump in the original Doom, but I won't tell you how :)

-Upon its release, Plutonia was deemed impossible to finish. This is because the exit in map 01 is locked behind a door that can't be opened. In 2010, it was discovered that it requires a special glide to finish the map, and ever since then Plutonia has been considered the easiest iwad. This trick has been dubbed "the Plutonia Glide". A patched version fixing this door has been used for future releases since most casuals can't figure out the trick.

-John Carjack says that he doesn't like Doom. He stated on twitter, "the game wasn't all that fun, really. Maybe if I had added glory kills the game wouldn't have come out so bad."

-Doomguy was to be voiced by Will Smith, but was fired after the incident during the 2022 Oscars. Luckily, the team hired Link, known for his work on the Zelda games, just in time for the release.

-John Romero was originally paid to do voice lines for the Icon of Sin, but was hired full time when Carjack said he'd never met another person named John.

in doom 2 map02 you have to jump across a gap back when jumping was still in deveolpment and jumping was scraped so you have to idclev3 to beat the game and it is very considered by the doom community that doom2 is maze like and bad for this reason alone
