Please help - problem downloading gzdoom

Recommended Posts

1. download GZDOOM
official version both modern and vintage
development version the latest updates

2. Make a folder for that version of GZDOOM, for example

Quote

D:\DOOM\ENGINES\GZDOOM\gzdoom-bin-3-7-2

or

Quote

D:\DOOM\ENGINES\GZDOOM\gzdoom-x64-g3.8pre-590

and unzip the downloaded 7z file

3. Run GZDOOM.exe
a file gzdoom-username.ini will be created

4. Close GZDOOM.

5. copy the IWAD file/s

(DOOM.wad, DOOM2.wad, HEXEN.wad, whichever you have)

into that folder
or edit the ini file to point to the IWAD files folder, for example

Quote

[IWADSearch.Directories]
Path=D:\PWAD_EDITING\IWADS
Path=$DOOMWADDIR
Path=$HOME
Path=$PROGDIR

6. Run GZDOOM and enjoy playing the game.

However, be aware of the graphics card and graphics driver in your computer.

The above mentioned GZDOOM versions assume a graphics card which can run OpenGL 3.0 or higher.

For an older graphics card use the vintage version of GZDOOM.

Try right-clicking on the download link and then 'Save Link As'.  That might fix it.

Otherwise, you might try uninstalling VCL.  It sounds like you may have some corruption going on, or you've somehow managed to associate zip files with VCL.

Edit In:

If the first suggestion ends in the same result, do the 'Save As' thing again, but this time change the '.zip'  part to something else.  It doesn't matter what.  Then let it download.  Then when it's finished downloading, change the '.zip' part back to '.zip'.

it still saves it as a VLC file.

yeah I don't know how that happened. Anybody know how to un-associate zip files, before I try uninstalling the VLC player?

Hmmm....

Find a zip file on your computer.  Any zip file.  Right click on it and find the option 'Open With'.  Tell it to open with any zip-extraction app you have.  That ought to fix it.

^ I try that but I don't have any zip extraction app AFAIK.

on my old computer there was an 'extract all' option if I recall, but I can't see that now (I've just got a new computer hence why I need to download Gzdoom again)

Windows has had built in zip support for years. You should just be able to right click on the file and select extract all. Otherwise select open with and choose windows explorer

It don't get saved as VLC file... VLC is just set as default program to open zip files. Install 7zip, then right click on any archive will give new "7zip" submenu with options to extract or open archive. Man, it's not 80's anymore to don't know such simple things. :)

I've changed it to Windows Explorer, but now have a new problem. When I try to play the WAD I get:

Execution could not continue

OpenGL driver not accelerated!

Anyone know what I should do?

Update your video drivers. Use GPU-Z and put up a screenshot of what it says you've got. The "Graphics Card" tab should be sufficient.

Unfortunately GPU-Z does not give you the important information,

namely what OpenGL version your graphics card supports.

At least it tells you that it is the Sandy Bridge GT1. Googleing leads

to the Techpowerup page, which states that OpenGL 3.1 is supported.

Theoretically you should be ok, but, the Intel drivers are not the most

reliable ones, so I would do some research on the

ZDoom Forum for intel problems which there are a lot of.

Addendum:

GPU Caps Viewer gives more details. For example my card

Also, it appears that Intel drivers are not supplied with OpenGL drivers

Did you try the vintage version of GZDoom?

Did you read the intel.com webpage I linked for you and watch the video?

Anyways, to find out if and which version of OpenGL is installed on your computer

download the GL_Viewer from Geeks 3D and run it.

You should see a display such as this

JDprw0h.png

Of course, your display would be for the Intel graphics card.

Thanks Kappes Buur. I just tried the vintage version but the quality is so bad I can't imagine playing Doom on it.

I will try one of the ports Edward listed

here's my GL viewer display:

What do you mean "the quality" exactly? Frame rate presumably?

I might be totally wrong here, but your specs confuse me. You talk about your "new PC" but Intel HD Graphics 2000 dates from nearly 10 years ago. Can you tell us more about your PC?

If it's the case that your PC is actually just super old, then yeah, GZDoom will be too much for it. PRBoom+ is a solid alternative.

It's not the fault of Windows 10, it's the age of your graphics card.

Well, I did some more research for you.

From https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=63032&p=1085185&hilit=Intel®+HD+Graphics+2000#p1085201

GL 3.3 is the baseline feature set that can properly handle all current features with the exception of shadow maps.

is the crux of the matter, which means that, since your card can handle only up tp GL 3.1, you are relegated to playing the vintage version of GZDoom or some other port.

yeah it's an old PC - but new to me -  somebody gave it to me. My previous PC was still Windows 7 and had some other problems, however it clearly had a better graphics card because GzDoom worked

Well your new PC doesn't even have a graphics card, so yeah, anything would have been better!

That's a point actually - do you believe your new PC has a graphics card?  It could be your using your integrated graphics chip by accident.

I'm not sure - is there a way to find out and change that?

Try LZDoom or QZDoom

https://forum.zdoom.org/viewforum.php?f=231

or some older GZDoom

https://zdoom.org/files/gzdoom/bin/

which support the ZDoom family mapping formats and are a lot better then PRBoom

QzDoom didn't work. Lzdoom worked but had really bad graphics

I tried one of the older Gzdooms and it worked but annoyingly the mouse cursor/arrow appears in the middle of the screen when I play - is there any way to get rid of that?

I'll try a few more older Gzdooms before going onto PRBoom....
