Are there any megawads that are more linear and less running around the map?

Recommended Posts

My friend has interest in trying Doom but he doesn't care much for the traditional style of maps, what with getting lost and backtracking etc. He hates the idea of going through a convoluted level and running around all over the place and sometimes getting lost. He also doesn't like the idea of 20-30 minute maps. He didn't play through much of Doom 2016 for thi8s reason, even though that was more linear than usual.

Anything he can try that might fit his preferences? Doesn't necessarily have the be a megawad, a shorter mapset would suffice.

Can't imagine how he got lost in there, when there's bright green lights and a compass telling you exactly where to go next.

This is less about linearity and more about stringiness vs. compactness. Throw in Lunatic, Vanguard, Unholy Realms, TVR, and Deathless (latter is for Ultimate Doom). If you don't mind custom enemies, 50 Monsters. On HNTR, try out Sunlust; on HMP, try out Doom 404. Old school classics like Scythe and Scythe 2 are worth mixing in as long as you're ready to drop down when encountering the difficulty spikes in the map-twenties.

Demonfear--nice small maps that take 3 - 10 minutes apiece and aren't necessarily easy (well maybe by today's standard they are).   Still worth it.

Scythe

Linear DOOM

Any doom wads from 2000 to 2003

(most maps i played around from that time where more story based)

there's also a COD WAD that SGTMkIV showed off a few years back

and

anyones first Doom WADs

hope this helped! :D

Lock him in a room with Final Doom loaded up on an old 486 and tell him not to come out til he's beaten it on UV

Honestly if he has troubles navigating in Plutonia he's done for. Except maybe for two/three late maps.

It's not that he has troubles with it, he just finds it tedious and a bit stressful at times.

Shorter maps offer fewer chances to get lost or frustrated, even if they aren't especially linear, so some of the suggestions here might be relevant.

I'd much rather he played Doom 404 instead. :)  Also small maps, and they're rather a lot better.  Significantly harder, but that's what difficulty settings are for.
