This doesn't really apply now since with the new Night Dive version you can play with straight up WASD controls if you want

Alright, thanks for the tip! I know that they remastered the first 2 for some reason and those ones often go on sale for quite cheap so maybe i'll pick 'em up one day and play through 'em as it's been years. I think the last time i played the first one was around 2011 when i bought my PS3.

Don't do it! Please, I implore you not to ever go anywhere near Bioshock 2. I wanted to pretend that it never happened, but I feel an obligation to sway as many people as possible from even considering to play it. If I could erase that game from existence, I would. Bioshock 2 is the only video game that I would ever erase from existence. The people who produced Bioshock 2 should be eternally ashamed of themselves.

Whats so bad about Bioshock 2. I played it many years ago. Although its plot was not as great the first game, it was still a enjoyable game with improved gameplay (for example no need to switch b/w weapons and plasmids unlike the 1st game).

Bioshock 2 MAY be the weakest of the 3 Bioshock games, buts it's not THAT bad.

Let's take an immaculate, perfectly self-contained story that deftly explored the vistas of morality, free will, and objectivism and needlessly retcon everything. How the hell did Sofia Lamb even get into Rapture in the first place? The whole point of Rapture was for people to get away from people like her, and until Frank Fontaine's greed exploited the inherent flaws that come with an economic model that's utterly bereft of any government oversight, Rapture flourished. It makes no sense why so many people that wanted to escape from even the mildest of socialistic principals would join an extremist leftwing cult led by a boring, smug, and pretentious twat. Very few villains have ever been as fascinating and complex as Andrew Ryan. As deeply flawed as he was, his ideas for creating a perfect utopia were well-intentioned, and until Frank Fontaine caused everything to go to shit, the quality of life in Rapture was peerless. It makes no absolutely zero sense how so many people could take Sofia Lamb seriously. Nothing about her arguments are compelling. She would have been thrown into an insane asylum and/or experimented on, and nobody would have minded.

After ten years of unyielding leaks, how has Rapture not completely flooded yet? How does Delta, being a prototype, have so many advantages over the fully-produced line of Big Daddies?

This is not a game that exists because someone wanted to tell an interesting story. It exists solely to exploit the goodwill of the original game for monetary gain, and does nothing but diminish the poignancy of the original. Shame on anyone who had anything to do with this foul blight.

Quake 2 is a far superior game to Quake 1. I know that Quake 2 has opted to go with the more generic "cyborg aliens as enemies" option rather than the Lovecraftian abominations of the first, but that doesn't mean that id Software can't have fun with their ideas. As a result, Quake 2 opts to be this over-the-top action flick that's way more entertaining to sit down and play with, rather than the all-too-serious shooter that has nothing but muted colors and the same five monster types in each level over and over again. I mean, people rag about how "brown" Quake 2 is, and I just don't see it.

Doom 3 is a vastly underrated Doom game. Just because it doesn't have balls-to-the-wall action and its horror primarily consists of monster closets and spooky sounds, that doesn't mean it's horrible. If anything, it's actually one of the better-crafted games of its time, and from a gameplay perspective, at least it has more variety than Half-Life 2. Granted, it's literally been well over a decade since the last time I played HL2, but for some reason, I remember there being more monster varieties in Doom 3 than in HL2 all the way through. I mean, the gameplay isn't the best thing ever, but at least it manages to be visually striking with its style which appears to be clearly inspired by anime works.

I don't know why, but I find the Legend of Zelda franchise to be rather overrated. I did play Twilight Princess for a while, and it was fairly decent. That being said, I can't really shake the feeling that it's just not for me. It just feels too plain when it comes to the fantasy genre.

And now for some not-so-retro unpopular opinions:

While Doom 2016 was an excellent game, it really wasn't the "all-new Doom title" I was expecting. I know there's more of a focus on gameplay rather than story, but I feel like they took it too far in the other direction when it came to the action/horror spectrum. As a result, it does do a great job in setting up the Doomguy as this unkillable demigod who nut-punches Cthulthu every other Tuesday, but I can't help but feel like it more or less reduces the demonic hordes into a sort of punchline (the same demonic hordes that are capable of wiping out all life on Mars and later Earth). Plus, with the eventual release of Doom Eternal, I can't help but feel like they may be taking it into a similar direction as the original Doom novels (the ones where they show that the demons are actually aliens called "Freds", and by the end of it all, it's more or less become a space opera akin to The Forever War). Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely excited for Doom Eternal and I have a feeling it'll be an even better game than Doom 2016. In fact, I actually love the more Gothic approach taken when it comes to new worlds like Argent D'Nur.
I dunno, I know that OG Doom is extremely open to interpretation due to how limited its presentation was at the time, but I was kind of expecting something more... mature. I don't mean anything like Doom 3 or those spunkgargleweewee shooters that pervaded the market until Doom 2016 came along, but I would love to see a take on the Doom franchise that's reminiscent of Spec Ops: The Line or the Machinegames Wolfenstein trilogy. I mean, I'm talking levels of gore and psychological horror that would've originally bumped up Event Horizon to an NC-17 (seriously, they had to cut half an hour from that movie which contained nothing but extremely graphic violence), as well as the satirical dimensions of the original Robocop movies and philosophical ideas mostly seen in popular cyberpunk works like Blade Runner.

Speaking of Wolfenstein, The New Colossus is NOT the absolute nadir of the Machinegames franchise, despite what certain "figures" may say. I know that the levels themselves could have used way more variety and the story made me legitimately uncomfortable in places, but it was otherwise a pretty great game overall. They definitely improved on the gameplay aspects, especially the gunplay, and there were other parts of the story that made me legitimately emotional in a good way. At the very least, I could understand the vision behind TNC and how it connects to TNO. Overall, I'm excited to see how they'll be doing Youngblood and the final entry in this new Wolf series.

Quake Champions is not that bad, seriously. I mean, it pretty much plays like Quake 3 Arena with a fresh coat of paint and some new features (and yes, I've played Q3A back in the day, though it's been an incredibly long time since I played it). I mean, at least we get to see different skins for our favorite characters, including Doomguy.

@Ajora

While I agree with you on the story front, I feel like Bioshock 2 is still a good, if not great, game when it comes to gameplay compared to the first game. Plasmids and weapons are a lot better and the audiovisual feedback from the inside of the Big Daddy suit is immensely satisfying. Minerva's Den further built upon that by introducing the Gravity Well plasmid and the Ion Lance, both cool additions to the arsenal (the former especially), and delivering an amazing condensed storyline on the level of Bioshock 1. What I'm saying is, at the very least it definitely had its moments, although it's easy to see how it might've disappointed and alienated quite a few players. From what I've seen Infinite is an even bigger departure in setting, story and gameplay, but I've yet to play it.

i honestly cant be bothered to go into why bioshock 2 is (in my personal opinion) better than the first game. suffice it to say, it actually has themes and it carries them out to the end, holistically enveloping the emotional core of the story in the gameplay and the exploration and stretching it across the length of the entire game instead of shitting its pants and dying two hours before it closes in a series of exponentially bad decisions that serve to devalue the entire game experience up to that point like the first game, and to a lesser extent (imo) infinite as well.

I can talk really subjectively about how I find sofia lamb to be much more compelling as a utopian thinker, taking the old adage that utopias would be great if humans werent humans, and running with that to literally "create the first utopian." Ryan's failing as a human was in his inability to live his own big ideas out to their logical extremes -- his nature got the better of him and he tried to own a city he created for the lack of ownership. Lamb contrasts by being evil strictly because she does live out her ideas to the logical extreme, and the logical extreme is terrible.

Furthermore, our role as protagonist is actually meaningful to the way you interact with the gameworld. Essentially the game is a custody dispute and the mother (sophia lamb) has literally turned "the family" against you. Its up to you to prove your worthiness as a human, and not a monster, and as is revealed at the end of the game, to be a good role model for your "daughter." Of course Eleanor isnt your daughter, but strictly speaking she isnt Sophia's either, or Graces, or Stanley's. Your interactions with every human are meaningful and unique and, like the first game, characterize these humans in strange and interesting ways. Unlike the first game, although the first tried desperately to do this with the harvest/rescue mechanic, your interactions with these characters also serve to very organically and subtly characterize you, the player, and in a way you totally control, increasing your immersion and forcing to you engage with the story in a far deeper way than the first game.

well it turns out i was bothered to go into why bioshock 2 is (in my opinion) better than the first game anyway. I could keep going but at this point i feel like it wouldnt be worth it.

How can Delta kick other big daddies butt? Well he is the only one bothering to harvest\free the little sisters and take ADAM. If anything it makes more sense than a human being able to kill that many big daddies and be much stronger than all splicers. He also uses cheap tricks, guns and first aid kits because he isn't stupid enough to do a "fair fight" with a bouncer or a Rosie, free will needs a nerf!

here's mine: i think descent's automap is mostly usable (bank controls in it can get fucked though) if you orient yourself with the mine and use multiple reference points

i fully feel they could have added something that works similarly in quake and it would have helped a lot, probably even better than descent itself since you can't bank and the levels aren't near as twisty

Man, I like Doom 3, but I can't put it over HL2 when it comes to gameplay variety, Ravenholm alone has more variety than the entirety of Doom 3.

This. I don't think that highly of HL2, but it is a better game than Doom 3 in almost every way (story, characters, art style, environment, graphics, and combat like using environment to ur advantage)

Because they tried to pack up every possible thing into the sequel to be on par with the success of the first one. Then you have: vehicle driving, survival horror, street combat with NPCs...

Not to be a hater at all because I've been a big follower since early 90s but Id's games were generally flat and plot-thin and story scarce, and the gameplay was linear. It wasn't until Rage with its looting, item crafting, trading and such that something different came along.

Shadow Warrior is only harder if you pretend the stupid shadow ninjas are everywhere. But they aren't unlike cultists and fanatics who are places humans can't even live, Tchernobog must've blessed the fuck out of them.

Also they can swim, which makes them even more dangerous, ironically.

Honestly I don't know why people call Blood so insanely difficult, I didn't think it was all that bad. But now that I'm playing through Shadow Warrior I feel like I've died twice as much as I did playing Blood and I'm only 2/3 of the way through.

When I first started playing it I actually though my game was glitched because I kept getting teleported back to an earlier area. But It was just because I kept exploding into pieces so quick that it reloads my last save before I even realise I had died.

Atleast with Blood you <usually> see why you died but in Shadow Warrior it's like you just spontaneously combust out of nowhere whenever there's more than 5 enemies on the screen.

Oh yeah, and the hornets.

Dear god, the hornets.

It's not so difficult after you learn to deal with the enemies, but it has a noticeable step up if you're playing on Well Done compared to the lower settings. Post Mortem aka Plasma Pak is brutal on Well Done if you don't know what comes next.

Looks like Tchernobog expended too much of his power on blessing all those cultists, since his henchmen Cheogh and Cerberus are much stronger bosses than him, especially the latter.

What I found a bit tricky while playing Blood is getting the grip of dynamite tossing. It's one of the few games where an explosive weapon makes an appearance this early in the game and retains its usefulness throughout, so about a dozen deaths were due to a misjudged toss.

Indeed, dynamite throwing is an essential skill in Blood.

If the player does not learn to throw dynamite efficiently, they might as well close the game and play something else instead, it's always going to be important in the game.

Mostly FPS games from the 90s, a few platformers, all PC:

-Keen 5 is best not Keen 4

-Xargon is a great game that got almost no attention (and is now freeware!). It blows away Jill of the Jungle.

-Wolf3D needs some form of extra features or 'creative touch' to be fun. Thankfully lots of mods do have that

-Plutonia is the best full commercial DooM II game

-Shadow Warrior 97 is pretty fun

-The fifth episode of Blood is underwhelming. Cryptic Passage is better

-The base game of Quake I is bland BUT a lot of its custom content is awesome-Quake II has a better base game than Quake I (but not for custom stuff)

-However, Quake II is a DooM II 'clone' in many ways...just study the monsters...

-Hexen is worse than Heretic in the vast majority of ways

-Anything Half Life onward just isn't as good, except Serious Sam: First & Second Encounter

- Sprite based gore is best gore.

I have no idea why, but there just is something about it that makes these games so insanely satisfying (gibbing and blowing up enemies in Build engine games, fatalities in the MK Arcade trilogy, blood sprites in newer but otherwise still classic games, so and so on). Even viopence in NES/8-bit games, nothing seems to beat this shit for me.

Serious Sam moves too slow.

Postal 1 has aged a lot better than Postal 2.

Quake 3 is way better than UT99.

Honestly this is the impression I get from the community as a whole. Plutonia's style to me seems to be the most influential out of all the IWADs, except maybe Romero's E1 techbases.

If I had seen this comment about 4-5 years ago, I would've showered my wraith on you. But I have become much more forgiving towards Quake 3 since then.

Actually I now believe that Quake 3 is the peak of FFA deathmatches and 1 vs 1 duels that has not been surpassed since. Though UT99 is still better when it comes to team based modes.
