scwiba Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) You may have heard of NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month, when aspiring novelists try to write 50,000 words in 30 days. Well, get ready for NaNoWADMo! (Do yourself a favor and don't think too much about this abbreviation.)NaNoWADMo 2018 was a huge success, thanks to over 30 mappers and dozens more supporters cheering us on! If you took part last year, I hope you'll come on back for a second go! And if you didn't join us in 2018, why not give it a shot in 2019? Voting is finished -- this year, the challenge will be held in October! I'll be back a few weeks before that to remind everyone to fire up their map editors! If you need a refresher on how NaNoWADMo works, click the spoiler for the full description: Spoiler NaNoWADMo is a mapjam of sorts that takes place over the course of one month. You start mapping on the first of the month and challenge yourself to complete a mapset by the last day of the month. The maps don't have to be masterpieces or even ready for release. It's perfectly acceptable for your "completed" NaNoWADMo project to just be a bunch of rough versions of maps to build off of later. The point of NaNoWADMo is to buckle down and make maps without overthinking or second-guessing yourself. It's about breaking through mapper's block, laying the groundwork for that megaWAD you always wanted to make, or just proving to yourself that you can do this! With that in mind, there's no winner and no trophy, and the goals you set are up to you. For me it always helps to have really concrete rules and deadlines, but if you want to use your own set of rules or no rules at all that's fine too! Here are the challenge rules I've set for myself (keep in mind that these are just a suggestion): 1) As of midnight (your time) on the 1st, you can start work on your brand new WAD. It's okay if you've got ideas, a written outline, even a resource pack compiled before then, but no work can be done on the actual maps (including sketching them out) until the 1st. For the next 30 or 31 days, you map at whatever pace makes sense for you. All I ask is that you take care of yourself and know your limits. It's not worth compromising your mental or physical health to get a few more maps done. 2) A complete project is considered 27 maps, whichever IWAD you're working with (previously it was 32 for Doom II, but it doesn't really make sense for one IWAD to require more maps). Maps can be any length, for any port, and any gameplay style, as long as they can be played from start to finish (though one or two progression-breaking bugs are okay). Obviously you could make 27 boxes with exit switches and call it done, but... why would you do that? 3) The challenge ends on the last day of the month. Post a download link for your WAD in this thread that day or the day after, whatever state it's in. Don't worry if the maps are buggy and unpolished! You can playtest, bugfix, and polish to your heart's content after the fact. Heck, you could take all your short NaNoWADMo maps and use them as starting points to expand into Eternal Doom-sized epics. They're your maps to do with as you please! So what if you don't make it to 27 maps by the deadline? What if you've only got 25? Or 12? Or 3? Well, then you've got 25 or 12 or 3 maps you didn't have a month ago! You've got something to build off of at your leisure, or some cool concepts you can turn into even cooler concepts later. The idea of the challenge is to get your mapping juices flowing, so if you get anything done, pat yourself on the back! You did it! That's it! Remember: this is a challenge, not a contest. Above all, it should be fun. Happy NaNoWADMo! Here's a list of all the awesome projects that were born out of NaNoWADMo 2018: Spoiler Beautiful Nightmares (in progress), by @elmle Beyond the End, by @Scypek2 Chicxulub Impact (in progress), by @TheOrganGrinder Deathless, by @Jimmy Doom Doom (in progress), by @Walter confetti Fun N' Gun* (in progress, direct download), by joe-ilya Halfdeath (in progress), by @Worm318 Hell on Phil (in progress), by @Philnemba Nanocore (in progress), by @franckFRAG NaNoDanMo (in progress), by @Danlex Nanopineapple (in progress), by @meapineapple NoisyDiarrhea, by @NoisyVelvet Operation Sea Wolf (in progress), by @Impie Scattered Ashes, by @Lorenz0 Wolfenstein 3D, Part 2: ROTT, by @Voltcom9 UnBeliever, by @Ryath [If your project is listed here but a more up-to-date version is available somewhere, please let me know so I can link to it!] Edited July 1, 2019 by Ryath 33 Share this post Link to post
Walter confetti Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) Awesome! I had lot of fun doing this last time, how about September or October for the next installation of this challenge? 1) October 2) September A difficult moment for me will be summer, especially July and August, any other months will be good for me... Edited June 3, 2019 by Walter confetti : Didn't read good the post and wrote lots of wrong things lol. Also removed a tag for Gothic thinking he was working on this... 0 Share this post Link to post
NaZa Posted June 2, 2019 Anything from July to October works for me, later not so much. 1 Share this post Link to post
nicolas monti Posted June 2, 2019 1) august 2) july 3) september I'm not sure I can make it, maybe small maps, I'll try my limits tough. 0 Share this post Link to post
Worm318 Posted June 2, 2019 After thinking for a bit september is actually okay but I still would prefer towards the end of the year: 1. September 2. November 3. October 0 Share this post Link to post
Jayextee Posted June 2, 2019 Please, anything after September. I can't be the only person working on something to (hopefully) release on the 30th to coincide with Doom II's anniversary... ;) 1 Share this post Link to post
Breezeep Posted June 2, 2019 If I were to partake in this, I'd like it to be either July or August. 1 Share this post Link to post
AD_79 Posted June 2, 2019 Stated this elsewhere but I'd like to give this another shot! For me, anything between October and December would work, with November being preferred. 0 Share this post Link to post
Terminus Posted June 2, 2019 If I were to participate again, October sounds best for me because it's holiday season over here. November is also fine. 0 Share this post Link to post
Walter confetti Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) A question i have in mind: did multiplayer only maps (like deathmatch or similar) is acceptable for these kinds of projects? Or we have just to stay stuck to Single Player? 0 Share this post Link to post
spaztacus Posted June 2, 2019 I'm fine with what ever month the group decides. I'm down!!!! 0 Share this post Link to post
riderr3 Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) 1) September 2) October 3) November Edited June 2, 2019 by riderr3 0 Share this post Link to post
Jayextee Posted June 2, 2019 If we're ranking; NOVEMBER - works best for me, cooling weather means it's going to start being very much 'indoors' weather OCTOBER - okay, spooky season is party season but it's also spooky season; I'll be in the mood for DOOM DECEMBER - less-ideal, because festivities associated with the month, etc. But still post-September. ;) 1 Share this post Link to post
slipcase Posted June 2, 2019 (edited) never done one of these challenges before but I'm down to try! i don't really have a preference in terms of month. 1 Share this post Link to post
Pegleg Posted June 3, 2019 @Ryath 1st choice: October 2nd choice: November 3rd choice: September Maybe I'll actually be able to finish something this time around. 0 Share this post Link to post

franckFRAG Posted June 3, 2019 I choose September. But the truth, I hope to finish Nanocore this month proprely :P 1 Share this post Link to post
Roofi Posted June 3, 2019 (edited) I should try this project in august. So , I choose august. 1 Share this post Link to post
Tango Posted June 3, 2019 (edited) it would be awesome to participate this year. I'm thinking maybe an otex megawad or a bunch of smaller, themed episodes would be great to build. or better yet, this would be the perfect opportunity to build the "remake my favorite multiplayer maps as singleplayer maps" that I've always been wanting to build! 1) August 2) December 3) October 3 Share this post Link to post

This was 95% done for some time, but the only thing I had to do was address some issues that the few who played it were having (in particular, DNF'ing on maps when played blind; a weird insta-crusher bug; etc). I went through my version today and did my best to tackle these issues. I'll probably post a thread for the mapset in the coming weeks even if not perfect. best of luck to those who participate in 2019. I already got my medal for surviving this last November, so i'll be sitting this one out, but good luck. 2 Share this post Link to post
scwiba Posted June 10, 2019 Hey all! The month's one third over, so get your votes in if you intend on doing NaNoWADMo this year. At the moment it looks like a close race between September, October, and November, but any month could still take the lead! 4 Share this post Link to post
Capellan Posted June 11, 2019 October does seem thematic given Halloween at the end of it. 4 Share this post Link to post
TheOrganGrinder Posted June 11, 2019 July and August don't particularly work for me, but beyond that point, I guess my rankings would be... 1) October 2) November 3) September 0 Share this post Link to post
Nymbus_Hustle Posted June 11, 2019 1) July 2) December 3) August I'm p pumped for this, I'm gonna get mad familiar with DB X before this! 0 Share this post Link to post
scwiba Posted June 23, 2019 One week left! If there's a month you prefer to do NaNo this year, get your votes in now! And spread the word if you can. The number of people who've voted so far is way less than the number who participated last year, and I want to make sure everyone who wants a say in the selection gets one. @Capellan, just to clarify, is that a vote for October? 1 Share this post Link to post
Capellan Posted June 23, 2019 If the vote is just for this year, no (because I don't plan to take part this year). If the vote is for setting the month we will always do NaNoWADMo going forward, then yes because I think it works well :) 1 Share this post Link to post

We may settle on a permanent month in the future, say, if we do a vote for a couple more years and if it keeps falling on the same month. But we'll see. 0 Share this post Link to post

I'd recommend standardising the month sooner rather than later. That way people can plan around it, rather than us going through a month-long voting process every year, and we won't have people saying "actually, last month would have worked well for me" :) 3 Share this post Link to post
