They had to include pre-order bonuses, didn't they? Doom 2016's launch was so "clean" that it was strange, but I guess they were just waiting to get some more confidence from the fans before pulling the inevitable AAA BS.

For technical reasons (i.e. weapon mods) it may be impractical to completely change the model of the weapon like that, so they settle with a reskin - which is pretty good considering.
