Help installing Doom on Mac

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I use to be a big Doom fan and for the last couple of years I have been trying to install doom on my Macbook pro and nothing has worked. I have spent so much time trying to configure this and to this day, nothing. CAN SOMEBODY - IN PLAIN ENGLISH - HELP ME FIGURE OUT THE RIGHT WAY TO INSTALL DOOM ON MY MacBook Pro Mac OS MOJAVE.  I would give anything to be able to play the old, and also, updated versions of doom. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help.

the mac build of gzdoom is comically bad, I can't recommend it. on my setup it runs at 1-2fps even on small maps, whereas zdoom 2.8.1 runs like butter, as does gzdoom if run through a windows VM. Your mileage might vary I guess.

If you're very new to running the game in general, @kmxexii recently wrote a primer on iwads/pwads/sourceports that you might find helpful: https://onemandoom.blogspot.com/2018/12/source-ports-iwads-and-pwads.html

As far as mac options go. The easiest plug-and-play option is going to be zdoom2.8.1, available here: https://zdoom.org/downloads (not gzdoom, not qzdoom, good old "zdoom"! ;D). With that application you can simply drag and drop wads onto it and it'll get goin.

Another option is Eternity, which in my experience seems to run nicely on os x. Available here: https://devbuilds.drdteam.org/eternity-mac/

1. Ive been running 4.2 dev models on my MBP 2015 no problems. I only get problems when the levels are really complex and theres a lot of shit going on the screen.

2. Depending on what macbook pro you have id suggest seeing if you can turbo boost it and download a program called turbo booster pro swticher. I really do suggest buying it(10 USD) because, you can tell it to automatically turn on with certain apps like i have it to turn on when i open GZdoom.

3. Its all down to you're hardware specs and optimizing your computer and Gzdoom settings. Make sure you dont have any high memory programs running in the background and close all windows that you are currently not using.  Once you finish that start tweaking GZdoom settings.

4. Ive found that ive never had a noticeable difference with screen size and resolution so whatever its on should be fine.

5. Texture filtering is set to none because, i like the. blocky aspect and its less the cpu has to render. Every other setting is just tweak it till you like the way it works and performs well.

If you take the time to set the settings right you can get it to run almost flawlessly on a macbook pro using the latest versions.
